      troubled development and corporate greed is only 2/3 of the issues. the last one being incompetent game devs that would even refuse to hire the old guard and abused their relationships with the ones that remained (the announcer va, chief and cortana va) you know, the ones that hated halo? yeah microsoft wasnt responsible for that

    Bungie didn't make the title update for Reach, they bailed after making the first map pack. 343 made TU1 and the dumb split playlists with different balancing.

    • @Kaceydotme
      @Kaceydotme  Před měsícem +50

      That.. makes a lot of sense

    • @Bizargh
      @Bizargh Před měsícem +32

      Yup, I'll back-up that statement. 343 Industries prepared that Title Update as Bungie had finally moved on from Halo & Microsoft's contractual obligations following the release of the Noble Map Pack, with the subsequent Defiant Map Pack primarily developed by Certain Affinity & the Anniversary Map Pack developed by 343 Industries & Certain Affinity (Certain Affinity would go on to be a major supporting studio for 343 Industries going forward, particularly in development for Halo 4 Multiplayer & Halo 2: Anniversary Multiplayer).
      For all of Halo: Reach's faults in the Multiplayer experience (I *love* the game, but the standard Multiplayer experience is undoubtedly it's weakest aspect while it's Custom Games was arguably it's strongest, especially as I used to *love* Rocket Hog Race in the 3v3v3v3 Multi-Team Playlist in addition to the Action Sack playlist, of which the latter did mostly return in MCC) and although I didn't enjoy the Title Update changes (They had to roll-back the bleed-through change due to a major issue that The Master Chief Collection would later solve & allow to happen there and while the Armour Lock changes sound great, I can't help but feel that other Armour Abilities have become more acknowledged as a greater menace to the Multiplayer sandbox over-time, especially as I caught so few people actually using Armour Lock in what games of Halo: Reach I did play with my continued & favoured use of Jetpack & Evade), they actually didn't do much to address the issues that the game's Multiplayer had for which the community Map-Makers otherwise did a better job of attempting to resolve (Not that you'd manage to encounter them often enough on the Xbox 360 Matchmaking as I remember quite the habitual voting favour for Sword Base whenever that only-good-for-Free-For-All map showed up).
      It does play very smoothly in The Master Chief Collection, but the absolutely elegant user interface from the Xbox 360 is sorely missed, along with the ability to locally store as many Custom Games files as your Storage Device could hold (You get a generous enough 150 'Shared Files', but only 50 'Private Files' for all games in the Collection, which is *appallingly low* when you remember that Halo 3 alone was originally limited to 100-per-Storage-Device, which Memory Cards & then USB-Storage could intuitively circumnavigate).
      Plus, I can't help but feel like that they should've offered all of the base-game's armour right from the start, especially as Guest Profiles cannot access them and they were the start of a lot of "On the fly" attempts of providing compelling Progression that I personally think *never* succeeded or was even finished in some instances (Get me started on 'The Exchange' and I'll start getting genuinely furious as to how something so evidently simple to manage & maintain has been absolutely not), if not actually hurt the game experience due to how swiftly bad habits of players came back (I could still often find "Spinning-in-Idle" players as recent as last year in Firefight, all the while it felt like only 3-4/10 matches ever resulted in all players participating, with many just remaining idle either to grind the ranks or because they were Away-From-Device while waiting & hadn't realised that they had *finally* found a Match). It really makes me think that 343 Industries has just continuously repeated mistakes that Bungie had applied lessons learned from Halo 3 as soon as Halo: Reach launched (A chief example being that Bungie avoided Multiplayer Achievements that could result in such disruption as lobbies being hijacked just to achieve them, all the while 343 Industries would continuously bring such things back as soon as the Anniversary Map Pack or as recent as the Challenge system for The Master Chief Collection).

      Honestly the TU wasn't all bad but every change was so controversial with people for and against each of them that I think it is cool of 343i to go and respectfully give people who didn't want the TU playlists to still play online. Sure, in a vacuum it is a bizarre decision but it was a nice gesture.

    • @Bizargh
      @Bizargh Před měsícem +9

      I certainly make use of that choice for myself (I do appreciate some of the new additions such as the Fireteam Raven armour and the camouflage weapon & vehicle paintjobs that I wish were as broadly applied as they were for Halo: Combat Evolved, but I just cannot get used to the Tech Suit changes made to the Elites' armour, so I turn it off just to have the old one back). I only disable it for Halo: Combat Evolved (Again, some of it's appreciated, but I much prefer something akin to what Halo: Combat Revolved does with such things) as Halo 4 only benefits from having it on and I don't know if you'd miss out on some of the genuine improvements Halo: Reach got.
      Still, when you look at the fact that Eldewrito actually expands the customisation options for both Spartan & Elite player-models with existing in-game assets (When others are not ported from other games), it can be hard not to look at that and ponder where 343 Industries priorities were in providing "distractions" for the slower & more meaningful work being done in the meantime when I can imagine a lot more people asking for the Halo: Reach Elites to get the customisation option expansion that H2:AM did, the Halo: Reach Spartan Armour/Helmet Attachments to be more freely selected or Halo 2: Anniversary Multiplayer to have more highlights from the Halo 4 armour ported over (I believe they are the same character models) rather than for all of that 'Mythic' nonsense they siphoned off from their Seasons/Series into The Exchange just to be even more bloody annoying to unlock, if not ever made available to unlock at all to this day in at least once case (The brought-from-the-cutting-room-floor Halo: Reach additions & Fireteam Raven assets were largely appreciated, but I think more people wanted the vehicles, maps & weapons from Halo Online rather than it's armour sets).

    • @Bizargh
      @Bizargh Před 28 dny

      Only if they use anything that didn't come from the original game, which basically every new player or guest profile will be using anyway since they're likely more interesting in playing the game than bothering to make use of all of the original game's options that come "out of the box" for it & Halo 4 (If only 343 Industries didn't make Halo 3: ODST & Halo: Reach exceptions to this, especially as nothing about unlocking anything for them again is "fun" or "meaningful").
      Besides, who even cares about who's wearing what in Halo 3 besides themselves anymore? I sure don't, nor have I met anyone who has since the Xbox 360 days. The most mention I ever see is about those who use Elites as their chosen Player Model (Of which I do).

    God, watching this in 2024 and after being there at that time in the thick of it all those years ago. When Halo was on top, when everyone was playing and as soon as you hopped online you would receive 20 different invites to either play campaign, multiplayer, forge or custom games. I remember growing up around that time and in school, the topic would eventually come up if you or the person you were talking to plays halo. That feeling after a long day of wanting to hop on and have some fun on the best game on the Xbox will never be lost on me. The community of people that played, which was one of the big reasons halo was such a fun game to hop on as well. Honestly watching this and thinking about how the franchise is today is beyond depressing. I feel like an old man reminiscing about days long gone and waiting to hear someone that is much younger telling me to "just give it up already" even though I am only 25, and those days felt like they just happened yesterday.
    Seeing how dedicated we are as a community makes me happy though. When Microsoft and 343 drop the ball at every turn, it is always up to us to make things happen. We do this every time no matter how tiresome it could be or how big the challenge is. WE MAKE IT HAPPEN. I am proud to be apart of this community. I am going to dig out my old OG Xbox and finally put in the effort to play insignia and x-link kai, as well as join the sunrise discord. So thank you Kacey for that final extra push I needed. I hope we can get back to how things were back in the day. With the release of halo infinite, it shut down that stupid argument of people saying "No one wants to play halo these days". Because when halo infinite launched on both steam and Xbox those player counts spoke more than words ever could and reminded me of the golden days. We are not tired of halo and I don't think we ever will become tired. The world just needs a true halo game, and we along with everyone else will be there to recreate those golden days of the past.
    Great Video, as always!

      Just wait five more years you'll be more cynical, jaded and even more pissed off your favorite franchise has been fucked to hell and back and is irredeemably screwed. H.I on ALL platforms, it barely plays on PC even mine says basically game is far too crap to play but my machine plays GTA V perfectly. Freaking A. I'm 30 and I was well in the thick of the Halo way back when as well, I got good by ONLY playing Campaign on H2 and then when firefight came out I was only playing that endlessly with endless waves smoking a joint and blaring music and maybe having a beer. Unfortunately I was not old enough to really drink or smoke but that didn't stop me from living it up and I got gud to the point I never had to really play multiplayer but I did anyways and was fucking awesome. Sprinting, the armor powers and now sprint is default and now we have sliding that shit is so cool too bad H.I. and the community and the company is in the state it is now. It's all Fortnite and shit now and now that we have that, it bothers me to lose at all, to be out done by some snot nosed little shit that has no life and all the time in the world to play whatever else and doesn't. I was never bothered back then of losing because it was fun, now Sweats dominate the Gaming Community while the haxors are even more relentless. Because Fortnite's Standards have made people worse mentally and kids are insufferable because of it all. Nothing is fun because it is all Sweat now, cringe. I remember playing Halo 2 back on the Original Xbox in the early 2000's with my childhood best friend, then I got a 360 Arcade so I could play Halo 2 backwards compat and I took that everywhere with me. Now Xboxes just do not last as long, you need to replace it or have it repaired by MS and that is made exasperatedly worse because of new advances and laser disk trays are a thing of the past you do not own your games anymore even though you bought a copy. Halo is in fact tired and old, it has no identity ever since Halo 4 it has had an identity crisis of the self and of the franchise. It's become Fortnite basically just without the building. How can you be so blind and ignorant? It was great back then, our memories and experience of it was great but now has been tarnished by copycat companies and the ever-expanding idea of "Metaverses" and Battle Royale-likes. Cringe. New game mode in Halo, yeah it just has been reduced to a Sweat match or devolves into a self defeating game mode, and they cannot even keep any sort of NON-Sweat game modes in the game at all. What the ever fuck happened to Bot Boot Camp?! Oh yeah constant inconsistency just like Walmart is unreliable for products and where they ever are they move around stuff ALL the time. Halo now has a shit TV show for smooth brainers and lazy arses that do not or cannot read Source Material. World building, go talk to Takahata101 he has more insight in one fingernail than all of Hollywood. Monty Glue, his sister has more insight as well and can tell a fascinating and immersive story. Activists in the place of actual writers and it's all dominated by politics and shit people telling us to "do better" when it is them that needs to do so. It's just not like how it was, son. You should get used to it the faster the better, for your sake. Rose tinted glasses and all that. It's nice to hear someone is still positive but I think it's a bit misguided and lacking certain eye-opening details in the world around you. Here watch an anime called 86, you'll get why positive reinforcement is lost after being fucked for so long like that as the 86 were in that anime. It's a worse effect of Conditioning, thanks Pavlov you git. It feels strange and alien to have positive reinforcement be used on you if you were fighting tooth and nail for so long with a corrupted government "Not" putting human soldiers on the battlefield as a means of "No human lives were lost" as a referential form of the book "All Quiet on The Western Front" and a combination of 1986, even Jon-Roh is like that as well as Akira. You'll get it, it just takes some time and understanding with a little bit of personal experience. Stop getting stomped on and put your foot down with a nice resounding and firm, "No more!"

    Great video! I wanted to add that another HUGE difference between the classic halo and MCC experience is the egregious sbmm used in MCC where it feels like matchmaking after enough wins is forcing you to lose against stacks or inferior teammates. Its the main reason why on MCC you will see so many smurfs or stacked teams to counter this. Once the MCC PC port came out pre/post game lobbies and map selection(replaced by composer) were scrapped resulting in this new sbmm system.

      @@Kaceydotme A good one for example is saying Halo 2 Vista is a better version of the game. The MCC version is based off of that port and fixes a ton of the visual and netcode issues and is generally more authentic/plays better. Even with matchmaking, sure h2v has a server browser but the majority of the populated servers are absolutely terrible, like people doing 16 player lockout/midship and the like.
      Or with CE, the netcode is a huge improvement over the original pc ports. It's still not perfect but you had to literally lag shoot/lead all of your shots to hit in the original while that's not as much of an issue in the MCC. I say this as someone that played a ton of custom edition reguarly, MCC is a better experience in both the port and netcode. Your matchmaking points are correct though.

    • @Kaceydotme
      @Kaceydotme  Před měsícem +1

      The issue with MCC H2 isn’t authenticity, though it does feel off- it’s that the matchmaking sucks, barely anyone plays H2, and while I didn’t include this in the video, H2 on MCC is full of the sweatiest players you’ve ever encountered. Even if you can hold your own, your team often won’t be able to and you’ll just get spawn killed and destroyed. Skill issue, yes, but I am better at Halo than most who are going to pick it back up bc of this video and if it’s not a good experience for me, it won’t be for them.
      Same with CE, never said the Netcode in custom edition was better. You’ve invented that viewpoint. The matchmaking is the problem, and both still feel wrong. There is no great way to play CE online right now, everything has a sacrifice, and personally the best option is organized private sessions with H1 Guide *via MCC*

While hosting customs with your own groups tends to be the best option a majority of the time, it's great that there's just so many options out there. I've personally really enjoyed eldewritos resurrection, and its use as a modding platform is going to hopefully be the start of something amazing. It's such a shame that the playerbase died down really quickly, though. Playing the game on Vulkan runs it extremely well, practically perfectly, at least for me, and it's a shame to not be able to play as consistently as when it first dropped. Honestly, i grew up with Halo from the early to mid 2000s starting with CE on my brother’s original Xbox, then spent a good portion of Halo 2 when we didn’t have Xbox Live. Halo 3 was good, ODST was a pure bliss, and Reach was a soft spot. Then 4 I remember I liked because it was 2012 and the time of gaming was just so new & kinda fresh. Then 5 was okay, I was never good at it but remember countless hours of playing Warzone Firefight. I’m glad Infinite made MP more easy and convenient for me and others and yeah I do agree that the sandbox needs to bring back that old school feel. But thankfully MCC is here to stay and be preserved.

    This was a really informative video and I'll probably check out some of the different ways of playing that you mentioned. I played halo a lot growing up and picked it up again when MCC came to PC (to the extent that i've 100%ed the achievements). One of the downsides to the secondary options (and even to the MCC in reality) is that i live in OCE and its rare that i'm not playing on a US West server from Australia. Although it can be a bit tiresome, I can deal with the ping difference. Unfortunately though, my less dedicated friends aren't so forgiving and so it's difficult to get them involved in it. As much as I love Halo, unless a new classic-style halo game comes out (that isnt made by 343 please), It's probably not something that I'll put as much time into moving forward - because gaming is a social thing for me. On top of that, I just kinda want a new classic experience that I can get hyped about and look forward to with my mates.
    Anyway, apologies for the rant 😅

    I honestly miss playing the legacy titles on split-screen. The last time I played them in split-screen with my brothers was back in 2015 or so I think. I know it was before we all got an Xbox One. Hits hard in the feels nowadays whenever I get any moods for Halo. So most of the time I'd just play the campaign or something on MCC. Reminiscing the past as I go through the campaigns or matches.
    I still hoped that at some point down the line, even with the issues with MCC, I could someday get a good match with people that aren't want to deal with the sweaty lobbies from social matchmaking. But I get nervous to ask people about custom matches. So that would also hurt the experience for me in terms of finding players.
    Hopefully, I can do it and find others that are wanting the same thing with these older games. Maybe make more memories as well.

    Although, I do want to ask, have you thought about either doing a video on the legacy and state of both Halo 4&5? Or personally, I think this would be more fun if you ever had the chance. A retrospective on the Halo Communities custom game modes and the legacy of Forge? Going from makeshift infection on Halo 2 in random public lobbies to whole gamemodes made post Halo 3.
    I feel like we always talk about forge, but not many delve into the history of the community, custom games and Forge besides saying they're fun. But rather not how it started and how it grew from a few simple ideas.

    Yo the absolute ODDS of this - just last week I invited a ton of friends over for me and my gf's housewarming, we all played Halo: Reach splitscreen on the OG Xbox 360 (first gen spaghetti edition, not the elite). I only just found out today by randomly being recommended a Mint Blitz video that this crazy modding scene has revived multiplayer with their goated coding skills!
    It's so funny, I was literally discussing this at the office with a boomer colleague, he doesn't game but is IT literate enough to understand how the internet works quite thoroughly - he said "hmm, couldn't you emulate web functionality by routing X-link (the LAN system link for Xboxes) through a VPN?" I was stunned, I never thought of that, I don't know if that tunneling method is what they used but it would certainly be ingenious.
    Anyway, in a few months I plan to do it again - I'm going to get another friend to bring his Xbox, we're going to link them together and join some games on the Reach or Halo 3 Sunrise Classic Servers as an 8-person premade! We range from quite good to absolute potato. I'm so hype for this, I can't wait, finally some Invasion and BTB action!

    • @chavzone
      @chavzone Před měsícem +1

      Also wanted to add, absolutely on point with the economic/management analysis of why Halo is stuck in a rut right now. It's an issue endemic to not just the gaming industry but all creative media in general - film, TV, games, music... Publishers are now just giant conglomerates with too much power, and most of the money (and decision-making) gets funneled into the marketing team, whose sole purpose is to battle other giant companies. The product therefore suffers, and we get locked into this miserable race to the bottom, where fewer and fewer games get made and they are all inispid and lukewarm, flailing about trying to appeal to the broadest audience but not really being genuinely enjoyed by anyone. That's why we now have microstransactions and day-1 DLC, pre-release betas and battle royale everything, instead of good story writing, split-screen couch co-op, memorable music and quality art direction, intelligent level design and engaging gameplay.
      I always caveat this with the fact that the indie dev scene has never been better - but obviously because of intellectual property copyright, that won't save our beloved franchises like Halo. Hopefully we see a return to what made it great in the not too distant - and in the meantime, at least awesome modders (and their wider community, like you the video maker and us the viewers!) are keeping the OG games and their spirit alive!

    Amazing breakdown Kacey. Really well put points across the board, especially on the future of Sunrise and Xenia. The only other caveat there is the lack of maintaining hoppers for Xenia, but there's a lot of good info still out there should folks choose to explore it further. The Xenia-netplay fork has also made immense strides (even addressing the arbitration/TrueSkill issues seen in H3), so the future is bright even if it isn't right around the corner.

  • @Sunny_Haven
    @Sunny_Haven Před 3 hodinami

    This is a cool video and while I've never been super big into Halo's multiplayer (and thus, MCC works just fine for me), it's nice that you have options if you want a more authentic experience. It just really fucking sucks that Bungie didn't give an easy method for people to host their own servers and such (or at the very least, instructions on how to set that up) for when the servers eventually died. I really really wish that kind of thing was standard practice in online gaming.
    Now if only there were methods to make online co-op play for the campaigns in MCC good to play... I really love the campaigns and co-op is what I play the most... is what I would say if the co-op's netcode wasn't dogshit. I've recently been playing through the games slowly with a friend and we had to go on a fucking journey just to get Halo 2 to load (as well as having disconnects on Halo: CE) and even when loaded, it's still not the best. It sucks that the team responsible for MCC updates (I believe it was Splash Damage, but I know it's not 343 Industries) refuses to attempt to fix it as they say it'd be too big of a task for their small team.
    At least you multiplayer folk have some options.

    It hurt hearing him say Halo 3 is best on MCC. Just dealing with all of the connection/networking issues that make even custom games play terribly, the hackers that aren't being dealt with, and even the glitches on MCC's multiplayer for Halo 3 where you just suddenly can't damage an enemy? There's no way I can in good faith say it's the best way to play it. And that's even without me bringing up other issues that annoy me that aren't as intrusive, such as Halo 3 (and all the games released after it) on MCC all have tons of visuals glitches/mistakes on MCC that mess up many visuals just like the original CE and 2 PC ports back in the day, but at least 343 seemed to have fixed the visuals of those two on MCC unlike all of the others. It doesn't matter if there's a tiny bit of host advantage in original Halo 3 (especially when it really isn't anywhere as bad as the video makes it out to be) and the issues of MCC far outweigh that to the point I don't get why he just flat out ignored them. It's the most played one, but also the most flawed one on MCC.

    I hope Insignia supports modded 360 in the future, can't convince myself to get a whole other console for a single game.

      Buy a PC
      PC can buy any modern game, do work, great graphics
      Modding is definitely not coming to 360
      It's not possible

    I think Xenia is actually in a pretty good spot with emulation in performance. There are RPCS3 games my current rig [which is not amazing but still] cannot run certain games, while Xenia out of even stuff id consider beefy ran pretty well, hell even GTA V... minus the crashes for that one.
    Scaling is another thing tho, i can defo increase resolution on RPCS3 without my rig dying while Xenia is... only happy if its on default.

    by the sounds of your complaints MCC would have EXTREMELY both in gameplay and financially benefitted from a veto system and let you que for multiple game sizes at once not just modes (this is extremly possible, TF2 lets you do this and that came out in 2007). You said you didn't like the new cosmetics but what you didn't mention is you can toggle seeing those off in your settings.

    I think may be the current matchmaking is broken some times I will find very fast some time not at the same times of days even though the player count seems balanced.

    Im currently doing a full playthrough in ce on Easy as I used to play that as a kid and I realized I REALLY want ce style game with maybe a FEW new additions .... Backpack reloading? Yes please! Switch weapon after an animation finishes if you hit Y before the animation finishes??? YES PLEASE... halo 3 does that but infinite you HAVE to wait for animations to finish before the next action ffs it ruins the fun and puts more load onto at least me .. I just wanna have the character to do what I get it to do without having to time actions to the mere milliseconds
    Usin xemu to play ce ... Almost perfect

    Idk why youre saying CE was never made for Internet play when the Original PC version and the Demo came with Online Multiplayer. You could probably still find Halo CE Demo servers to this day
