I like the inclusion of humor. It changes the pace of the video significantly. I don't know if I'm the only one who think that Contagion and Legacy would be a good two-part animated movie just as Long Halloween recently. I would love to see an animated Knightfall feature film too.

At the time all Bat titles were written in continuity. Contagion, Legacy, Cataclysm, and After Shock were all events that led up and shaped the events of No Mans Land. All archs were a little over written to accommodate and sale 6 to 9 titles. I think the large gaps in between archs were to give writers time to write. Also at the time, DC was getting a lot of negative feedback about long cross over story archs. The year and 1/2 gap between Legacy and No Mans Land was needed to make it all work

Dang! I really enjoyed Legacy. My experience though was quite different. I read Contagion and Legacy back to back, all fully collected. Including the later Bane of the Demon series. So no gaps or delays. I also knew it was Ra’s going in. I also haven’t read the elseworlds material you compared it to.
I enjoyed seeing Batman work so well with his tight-knit team of allies against a big epic threat from the Demon’s Head himself. For me, Ra’s is the biggest threat in Batman’s rogues gallery

This may have been a mess when published but in my opinion it reads well in the modern collection of the story where you have Bane of the Demon as a prologue and the Bane one shot as an epilogue plus you have the Catwoman issues you mentioned included in the lead up as well. In my opinion there isn’t any bad Batman stories written by Chuck Dixon or Alan Grant just a sliding scale of great to decent.

Depiste not being great story, I think Legacy is one the few stories that actually makes Ra's feel like a genuine global threat. Despite being consider Batman greatest enemy, the one who represents a threat to the whole world, Ra's rarely does anything that puts the world in danger in Batman comics. Eveb his apperances in Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams run, the one that many fans consider one his best stories, Ra's doesn't do anything that shows him as "villain that puts the whole planet in danger", except stealing a scientist's brain. After that the story is just Batman traveling the world and trying to find him.

Legacy was when I first started buying Batman comics outside of those based on B:tAS. I myself absolutely loved it. Ra’s is my favorite villain, but (like Godzilla for me in the 2014) I thought the Demon’s Head’s portrayal was perfectly balanced, I had a full grasp of the plague’s place in the story throughout, and while Bane may have been an Ubu, I had the full feel like Ra’s saw him as his biggest upgrade ever. Catwoman, OK very minimal, and while Scotland is a strange location choice, and while as an artist here Dave Taylor’s attention to detail is phenomenal, the action movements are MEH; but the story was a lot of fun, including the side story with the Picture descendants. But it’s my favorite 90’s arc to read.

You should still go read them even though you watch the videos 😂 Batman comics are amazing.
Batman stories to read that aren’t Year One or DKR:
Batman: Hush (overrated, but still very good)
      Batman: Court of Owls
Batman: A Death in the Family
      Batman: Under the Red Hood
      Batman: The Killing Joke
      Batman: Three Jokers
      Batman: Knightfall
      Batman: War Games
Batman: No Man’s Land (long one, but worth)
Batman and the Monster Men (my personal all-time favorite Batman story)
      Batman the Mad Monk
      Batman: Venom
These are just off the top of my head. Also, check out the “Caped Crusader” and “Dark Knight Detective” TPB collections. They collect 80s-90s Batman and Detective Comics, leading to Knightfall. A lot of them are just detective stories or Batman dealing with the crime/villain of the week, and are great stories with classic artists like Jim Aparo and Norm Breyfogle.

What was so amazing to me as a 17 year old Batman Reader of the time , was This was my first exposure to Ras Al Ghul in any comic. Besides the episodes of Batman the Animated Series, Ras Al Ghul had been pretty much dormant in Batman titles, with the exception of 2 Late 80’s Batman Graphic novels. For about a 20 year period they did nothing with Ras. So this was big for me at the time. 😊

Awesome video, and it touches on a topic that’s been on my mind for quite some time. I got into reading comics and Batman in particular through Morrison, and then continued on with Snyder.
I’ve read all the musts, so to say, from the 80s (Year One, Returns, Arkham, Long Halloween), but I’ve been meaning to go through a run again!
Could you point out actually good stories by Moench, O’Neil or Dixon? Cause my problem is exactly what you are alluding to, I don’t want a good script but a BS story. I want to get into their runs with something that is both beautifully phrased but excitingly laid out as a story.
Hope I make sense, and thanks in advance for any suggestions

    • @SalazarKnight
      @SalazarKnight  Před rokem +1

The thing to keep in mind is that long comic runs will always have ups and downs, whereas graphic novels are either good or not.
For Denny O'Neil, his best stories in the 1970s were done with Neal Adams. Unfortunately all their stories together have never been collected as one run. The closest thing out there is *"Batman: Tales of the Demon"*; which collects the first Batman saga ever printed in the comics.
Doug Moench is a special case because he has two Batman runs: one in the 80s and one in the 90s and also he's one of those writers who is not for everyone. If you want an idea of how he works, I would suggest getting the *Batman/Dracula: Red Rain* graphic novel. It's a self-contained story featuring some of Moench's most iconic work with artist Kelley Jones and it will give you an idea of the style they aimed for during their run in the main Batman title. On the off-chance that you end up enjoying that, you can follow up that with his 90s Batman run which was collected as *Batman by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones*. Unfortunately, his 80s run has never been reprinted or collected as a whole; which is a shame because I like it a lot.
And the thing with Chuck Dixon is that some of his best work was outside his run in the main comics. Like *Vengeance of Bane #1-2*, *The Joker: Devil's Advocate* and *Batman: Bane of the Demon*; all of them done with artist Graham Nolan. Their Detective Comics run in the 90s is also top notch, but the thing is that they were constantly interrupted by the big 90s crossovers, so they don't really have long storylines beyond the occasional three-parters in between crossovers, which is a problem across all Batman comics in the 90s. For instance, Knightfall contains half of Dixon and Nolan's run in the main comics, but Knightfall is a larger storyline anyways.

    • @Scorpionakias
      @Scorpionakias Před rokem

@@SalazarKnight thank you so much for all the suggestions. I’ve read Red Rain and I remember enjoying it so I’ll continue with what you suggested on Moench!
Knightfall I got recently so I’ll get through it. And then maybe check the other ones you suggested by Dixon.
The thing with o Neal makes so much sense, cause it’s a name I’ve been seeing here and there since forever but never actually got a suggestion. It’s a shame there’s nothing collected.
Thank you for this awesome channel, just found out about it, will make sure to check out your history of Batman videos soon!

Great new video Salazar, I guess the story was buried because of the confusing name. While it might be a pretty mid-tier Batman story the art does make it up for it in my opinion. I didn't expect that Brain joke! I loved it xD

  • @EnerKaizer
    @EnerKaizer Před rokem

This honestly felt like they were just making the story up as the pages were drawn by the looks of it. Some neat ideas, but no cohesion or polish to actually make it a proper story. And heck, this was easily doable. Instead of being obvious they could've just put tiny bits in that makes people suspect it was Ras, till the big reveal happens with Bane and the story establishing that Bane took control of Ras operations similar to how he beat Batman a year (in story) prior. Would make for a good twist and cement Bane as one of Batmans most cunning and deadliest foes, considering Bruce could never really beat Ras to this day (and him hiding as Ubu to not attract attention would've been a smart move on top of it). Keeps up with his gimmick (beating invincible looking figures and not just being brawns but also brains) while advancing other characters status quo as well.

I agree with you on the inconsistency of Legacy, as I thought the only great issues all took place in Detective while all the others were pretty forgettable. Chapters 1 and 6 in particular are excellent, but they make me sad that the other chapters were nowhere near as good. Talia being forced to marry Bane by her father was a really interesting plot point that helped make Talia sympathetic, but it's not really explored since it's dropped as soon as Batman defeats Bane. Come to think of it, Chapters 1 and 6 actually work better as a two-parter than pieces of a large saga.

I dunno, I still think Captain Stingaree and the Human Flea were the villains.
YOU DARE QUESTION THE NECESSITY OF SHIRTLESS DESERT BATMAN!?!??!? YOU DARE!?!?!?!? IT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF CATWOMAN CHEESECAKE, WHICH IS TO SAY, MANDATORY, YOU FOOL! After all, what would this story be if we didn’t see Catwoman’s perfectly sculpted rear and Batman’s perfect chest hair that all of the creative team wished they had.
I recently had relatives go to Scotland and they got sick with a certain virus, sooo… I think Ra’s is still at it in 2023. (They’re better now, but what an odd coincidence.)
This was probably your funniest video yet. Good job. I’m really hoping that this channel picks up soon, the algorithm can’t bury you forever. You put more effort into your videos than most bigger comic book CZcamsrs.
I’m more lukewarm on this story than you are, but I don’t think it’s particularly good or memorable either.
I like that Ra’s is an actual threat here and he actually does something himself for once (seriously, older Ra’s stories really have a problem with characters saying he’s dangerous and then he barely does anything, case in point, his debut saga). And there were a couple of okay character moments for him, but it’s far from the best Ra’s story, but also far from the worst.
Bane certainly was there. At least he eventually made a comeback in the Tabula Rasa storyline.
Catwoman certainly was also there, until she wasn’t anymore. Actually, if they were going to have a Catwoman tie-in, why not have her in Gotham teaming up with Huntress? Seems like it could expand the stakes a bit.
I was going to say something about Talia… but I forgot what I was going to say. Oh well.
The only death for a while was a politician, and the reader doesn’t care. Sounds like what happens in real life when useless politicians die. Sorry, Armand, you’re no one’s favorite character.
I feel like different creators proposed different parts of this storyline, and they had to loosely stitch it all together. O’Neil could’ve proposed the basic plot and Ra’s as the villain, Grant could’ve suggested the interlude in Scotland, Dixon could’ve suggested using Bane, etcetera. I don’t know if Dennis O’Neil was firing on all cylinders editorially here, it seems like they needed more time to hammer out the finer points of this story.
In summery, eh, it’s not particularly memorable. This video was much better, keep up the good work, Mr. Knight.

i consider that you miss a lot of important/cool points of this, as 10:56 is it catman? i think that you could have mentioned part of the story of that character, i know him and his original version.. and when i saw him, i mean cat woman was a hard off but when i saw catman my brain said man this must be a homage or something, also the bane part was a little bit of virgin typa rant huh? sorry if it was offesive but i was straight up funny, its ike so supossed fans or actual readers cant understand the universe that they like and its a shame...

It's not Catman. It's Hellhound, a random character from the Catwoman comics that has little to no relevance whatsoever. Sorry to see you go, but glad to hear your thoughts about the video. Cheers and good luck!

@@SalazarKnight thank you so much for clarifying that!, i didn’t read this comic obviously and I’m hella young but i grew up with some comics and here i am.

@@SalazarKnight i got a question, i remember a silver or bronze age comic that reminded me of the dark knight returns or the dark night, the joker wasn’t the joker anymore and i think that batman quit or something idk... it had that old look, y know... and that happened it’s been inside of my mind for years... and i just can’t find any video or anything related to that, sometimes i find the og suit of thomas wayne and more when I’m watching brave and the bold but the system/algorithm gets weird after a time and i just can’t find that story of thomas too

@@SalazarKnight yeah no, I’m not leaving, I’m still subbed, but the "ranting" it’s what got me off of the video, i noted various things but it started when bane first appeared, and i thought hey that man looks like bane I’d like to see bane here and then you revealed that he was bane and starting ranting and that he shouldn’t be there, I’m a casual in a comic-wise sense (?) like... I’m not here bc of the movies, but I’ve seen like actual readers or fans misunderstanding dc’s universe and how it works and everything... it just threw me off but it wasn’t enough until i reached certain time stamp and said i can’t listening to this anymore.
Also you should put a little bit of effort of going into detail, i mean it takes more time and work but it’s what makes the video and gets people to like you, no offense this content is... a copy paste, basic, average, everybody does it, it’s like a insta story, automatic content with no effort and basically every other channel will look and sound the same, the only problem is that they don’t get into details too, they don’t explain completely, and this new bald bearded guy did when i least expected, i thought he was gonna skip when i said bro it’s just another one but he did get into detail except when i wanted him to get more into detail with certain things... and that’s what differentiates channels, the everybody’s people’s channels and actual fans channels or something...
