I used to work at AppleCare about 10 yrs ago. We used 2010 iMacs for our everyday work. Apple decided to upgrade all of the iMacs in our building to a newer model and when they did, we all got to take our iMacs home and keep them. I still have mine and I will say, mine has zero fan problems and still works like the day I got it. I only use it to watch CZcams and answer emails (very light work) but the 2010 iMac was well above its time and most people who see it are like "wow you have an iMac? That's fancy" the normal everyday person can't even tell it's an old model.

About the fans... 'Macs Fan Control' can be installed and not only does the job but you can put custom thresholds in place in addition. Makes the machine under almost all conditions working quite silently. cheers

You couldn't be more correct when you said the 2010 iMac doesn't look like it's a 14 year old computer. I am semi new to Mac's and work at an MSP. A clients iMac started kernel panicking and they finally caved for the upgrade. Since we are primarily a Windows house, I didn't have to fight anyone over taking it home lol. Thing is.. I thought this was some moderately recent workstation iMac! I thought I had just made a big come up and started looking up videos for opening 2019 iMacs (LOL!!) but everything was so slim and glued together. As I am watching a video talking about the difference between newer and older iMac's, I suddenly was able to pop the front glass cover off cleanly and was immediately disappointed for a moment as I began to realize this was gonna have a very early i3. Once I got to the mechanical drive (it's what caused the kernel panic. can't boot the kernel if you get to it..) I confirmed the manufacturing date of October 4, 2010. Since I don't have any mechanical to 2.5in SSD brackets, I dropped in a 2TB WD Gold as a place holder to see if I could even get it to reinstall macOS. Sure enough I was able to get into recovery and get High Sierra proper installed.
Your video has given me hope that this may still turn out to be something worth putting a little effort into. I didn't realize I could upgrade the CPU to some extent! And I know I can add 2 more sticks of RAM. I can live without upgrading the GPU. Just having the discreet GPU is enough for me instead of the iGPU chugging along.

Have a late 2009 27” iMac that’s still takes care of my personal computer needs. Upgraded to SSD recently as the old HDD started to develop issues. With the two way DisplayPort it’s such a convenient home office setup. Hook up my work laptop and the iMac serves as a decent external monitor for my work even by todays standards.
With the SSD upgrade and much of my processing needs offloaded to the cloud (like Lightroom CC) it feels almost snappier than 5-6 years ago.

Dual booting to Linux alone made this machine amazingly usable again; however, upgrading from 4gb of memory to 12gb made the Mac os go from absolutely useless to super functional. It's my wife's machine and she just used it for office work so I don't think I will be upgrading to an ssd.

You know, It’s interesting you can just short that cable. I’ve had to get OWC sensor for it to work properly and actually read temperatures. I’ve got mine 2010 iMac 3 years ago for 50$. Still had its warranty stickers inside. Had to clean it and replace thermal paste. Overall, it’s still a very capable machine if you upgrade SSD and RAM. You can also upgrade its processor to i7-860s or i5-680.
