- A classic 1976 Soviet cartoon celebrating the values of tolerance and diversity. After this cartoon, 'goluboi' (light blue) would become common Russian slang for gay.
The film also showcases a unique animation technique using fluid India ink, and features the voices of leading stars of the 70s such as Alysa Freindlich (Office Romance) and Andrei Mironov (Diamond Arm, An Unusual Miracle, 12 Stools).

Here is more about people born with unusual physical "deviations". In the eyes of society, the blue color of fur is an oddity. In the original fairy tale, the puppy was black, they changed the color to give the hero more unusual and unlike others. If you want, you can see a hint of racism. The blue color is associated with innocence, dreaminess, sentimentality and moral purity.

I'm not a huge fan of the translation...I think the translator was trying to make it rhyme it in English and it ended up making some of the translations slightly inaccurate (words added that weren't there, etc.)
But, I'm happy that there is something at all, now I can show my childhood to my non-Russian friends. :)
It's just a normal non-literal translation. A pretty good one, actually, as far as I can tell. (russian as well)

"Light blue" as "gay" was used long before this film came out. It started in prisons around 1930s and became popular in 1960x. So it very much might imply that this Pup is "goluboi". The way other dogs treat him seems very similar to the way gay people are treated irl
A dog cannot choose his coat color, but a human can control their conduct and impulses if they choose to.
Sky Reality Being a gay person may be a choice, but the more important question is "Should we disrespect people's choices?"

A person can be born with all kinds of mental or physical defects. If a person is born with a predisposition for violence, they still have a choice whether to act or not. You may have no choice in how you FEEL, but how you ACT upon it - for better or worse - THAT is 100 percent a choice.

This cartoon was made at a time when the USSR did not think about the orientation of a person, this cartoon doesn’t have such a sense in itself, it is about kindness and friendship. I am from Russia, and I know enough about its creation.

Its always important to remember that media can be a product of their time. What was okay then can definitely be considered wrong today.

I love how, to you homophobes, NOTHING can be about queer people. Every single time, there HAS to be an extremely far-fetched, non-gay explanation. Forget subtext, forget allegory, forget social commentary, forget the old meaning of "light blue" in Russian (which precedes the making of this film) - in fact, just completely throw any bit of analysis out the window. This cartoon DEFINITELY has to be about how society shuns kindness. I'm sure kind people are systemically subjugated, and definitely moreso than any social group.
