I'm so used to reading "I DO NOT OWN THIS, I OWN NOTHING" on CZcams, its kind of strange to me to read a video description written by someone who does indeed own the copyright to the video. Classic animation by the way!

Danny Elfman composed the track for this film. Period. Copyright mine.
Then a year or two later I gave his agents permission to include it on a
compilation LP, I guess put out by Geffen. Now they claim I got the
music from the album or something. They're wrong. My film came first. My husband's

So here's the lore from what I got. Mr. Frog is our protagonist, and he's having a peaceful drive through the town when he heads into the spooky forest. Mrs. Tadpole (I believe her real name is something like "Glooy" or "Bluey." I dunno) jumps in the middle of the road to stop Mr. Frog and tells him there's a hex on her house. A Hex is usually a curse, so basically, she wants him to break the curse on her house. So Mr. Frog heads in with his curse-breaking bag to fix up the house. We can see a man jump out when it cuts to the house, possibly another victim. Mrs. Tadpole flashes the "Sucker" because she has another victim, and Mr. Tadpole is utterly oblivious to her trickery.
Mr. Frog and Mrs. Tadpole head into the house in complete shambles, twisting and morphing unpredictably. There are also monsters around every bend. These monsters are the past victims of Mrs. Tadpole. Then she brings him into the backrooms where only the Tadpole family is allowed. Mr. Frog is intrigued by the various painting and decor in the rooms, and Mrs. Tadpole does a little dance with him and kisses him at the end. Mr. Frog puts his finger on the wall and sniffs it. He smells the dead and trapped. On the balcony is Lord Tadpole, watching the two to ensure everything is going according to plan. Mr. Frog opens the family tree book and sees what the family really does. Lord Tadpole sends in the crocodile "Snapper" to try and stop him from figuring it out. Mrs. Tadpole changes into her proper form, and Mr. Frog doesn't want her to so that he's not alone in the scary house. So, he goes to sit on a couch but it starts to try and grab him. The lines turned into question marks because they were wondering where he went. On his way, he runs into a pot that turns out to be The Oracle, so he tries to escape, but the stories turn to a wave because they don't want him to.
Mr. Frog looks through a keyhole to see where it leads but finds nothing. Finally, Lord Tadpole gets Mr. Frog in his clutches and comes to feast on him. Mr. Frog looks at the basement door and can escape, but the Tadpoles stop him. The lizard man, whom I will call Mr. Dragon, is trying to warn Mr. Frog about the dangers of the basement, where people become monsters. Still, he is another victim of the Tadpoles, but his only form of communication is the sing. After the Tadpoles made up curse becomes real because of the magic Mr. Dragon could perform by keeping them distracted. During this, Mrs. Tadpole is finally lifted from the work she had to do and is now free to help Mr. Frog. However, the other Tadpoles that believe Mr. Frog perform the curse and start to chase him around but get caught in their OWN traps. Mr. Frog meets up with Mrs. Tadpole, and on the way down, the Tadpole family just waves because they believe they will still become monsters. They get there, and the rest is pretty straightforward. Mrs. Tadpole tells Mr. Frog of her secret subway that goes to Hell. Mr. Frog says he can't go but is coaxed by the offer of Maimi Beach. So he gets on the bus, and the two of them live happily together.
P.S This animation is top tier good job Sally

I first saw this on MTV (I think it was) around 1989 or 1990. I was so excited about it I told all my friends about it (at least, those who I thought might appreciate such weirdness) but we never saw it broadcast again. Years later, I was in a nightclub and they were showing weird animation as a backdrop to the dance music, and this short appeared (without sound, of course). And I still had no idea where it came from or who was responsible. I re-discovered it on CZcams a few years ago, and come back to view it often.

this quickly became one of my favorite animated short films when I first found it, but on this rewatch now I'm realizing a few reasons why. The use of things in it like highly specific tools and a scheduled dinner with all the house's residents feels appropriate in a cartoon world. I've had trouble ever since I was a kid with adopting traditions and standard practices like my peers were able to. The others around me saw eating at a specific time as an easy thing to do and completely normal, but I could never understand why that had to be. Wearing certain things at a certain time, doing things only within certain spaces, and having a million certain items to handle other items seemed all very silly to me. Seeing these kinds of behaviors be on par with puzzling characters living out a crazy story is very comforting. It's like a lens that shows how ridiculous common people doing traditional stuff looks to someone detached from it.

Saw some screen shots of "don't go in the basement" on Tumblr and figured I would check it out, I am not disappointed! This is astounding! It helps since I love both fluid, bouncy animation, AND just about anything with Danny Elfman.

I grew up watching “Above it All” on Sesame Street, then I found this animation by accident in middle school, and I come back to it every year or so to watch again! Those fun transitions and colors are always mesmerizing. I especially love the ride down to the basement at 4:15 :)
