  • In this video, I react for the first time to System Of A Down performing “B.Y.O.B.”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. System Of A Down keep mesmerizing me with their composition, plus Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian form an astonishing vocal duo!

Awards are usually so out of touch, but in this case I think that the best (mainstream) act putting out one of their best songs that was directly speaking about war for cash as we were experiencing at the time was a perfect storm that made the most deserving actually win for once

@@jasonGamesMaster if you think the war in Iraq was "for cash" you will believe anything without evidence as long as it conforms to ideology.

@@jedinxf7 lol. That's right. That was the only time in the last 80 years that the military industrial complex wasn't involved. I totally forgot. All the senators and representatives who own stocks in the companies than make the weapons suddenly left office for awhile, because they had to many morals to stuff their own pockets at the expense of the soldiers whose lives they ruined for no other reason. My bad. I had Iraq confused with all the other pointless wars we've been engaged in since WWII. Thanks for reminding me.

I really loved SOAD, when they were around and it makes me sad that they're not any longer. At some point they said, that they stopped making music as SOAD because they became disillusioned that nothing changed - which hits even harder when you realize that their messages are still needed and relevant today. It's hard, not to despair.

Great reaction and commentary. And I agree, such an inspirational band. I think their secret is just simply trying to wrap up a message within an authentic mood and always trying to serve the song even if they don't know where it is going to take them, but to keep the mood and initial intention alive until it is done. "They're very brave, politically" is an apt statement. Serj published an essay on SOAD's website about US foreign policy and how it is failing because it is so based on oil price as the main objective and how the policies have failed to rein in extremism in the middle-east and posited "Terror is not a spontaneous human action without credence. People just dont hijack planes and commit harikari (suicide) without any weight of thought to the action. No one in the media seems to ask WHY DID THESE PEOPLE DO THIS HORRIFIC ACT OF VIOLENCE AND DESTRUCTION?" He posted this essay two days after 9/11 attacks. Their record label took it down claiming that Serj was trying to justify terrorism. At that time just asking "why" was actually brave due to the massive amount of flag waving and, understandable anger.

Lots of fun vocals to look at in this one and thanks for the breakdown of how they structurally navigated all the big changes in tone!

"We can play metal, but it's boring for us", so I see. I would really like to listen to it with you Poets of the fall.

Another great example of art holding a mirror up to society and reflecting truths that may be lost on some of us.

Best reaction of them all! You're the first to really get into the meaning of the song (and I think you're spot on), while still breaking down the vocal techniques. All of this goodness was also wrapped up in a humorous red bow.

Great reaction... your ability to describe what's happening is, as usual, astounding. I can hear the symmetry in the different sections of the song, and the tempo modulation is not really subtle in this one, lol... but putting that into words is something I would struggle with. You really zeroed in on the right sections to compare to make it evident. You are very clear in what parts to focus on while giving examples, and it's appreciated. Great editing.

Best reaction/analysis to this song I’ve seen (yes. I watch other reactions to these things. Which I suppose makes me promiscuous in my reaction watchingness). While I’m sorry about your having been ill, I am glad you are back.
