  • In this video, I react for the first time to Chester Bennington performing 'Given Up' with his band, Linkin Park. In this video, I analyse his amazing performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.
    Chester is undoubtedly one of the best vocalists in rock history, as this performance demonstrates. Chester's legacy will certainly endure and inspire many vocalists around the world!

      That's becoz chester really is a superb singer with amazing technique. Try shouting like that for 2 hrs or the duration of a concert. A normal person will lose their voice after 15 mins. And he does it for concerts upon concerts. Attending a Linkin Park concert was well worth the money and an eye opener. I'm glad I got to see a legend in action before his passing.

  • @mattijohansen3471
    @mattijohansen3471 Před rokem +318

    I know many will say they wished you did the version where he holds a 17 second scream.
    And it is insane.
    But I do think this video/Concert is the best to react to, the emotion in Chester, hitting himself and living the lyrics he sings on the stage.
    Its so clear that those words resonated to him, as they resonate with so many who listen to the music all over the world.
    There is a difference between the "feeling depressed" and actual mental illness.
    Not that feeling depressed can't hurt a lot, like all the big feelings, love, and anger it will take over your body, and day.
    But suffering from actual chronical mental illness, that often come with chronical depression, is something else.
    Its just something you can't escape. No matter of success, love or self understanding will ever take it away, it will always be there, turning the best of everything against you.
    Often to a point where you just try to contain it on the inside, so it does not hurt those around you. When you understand you will never escape it, and it will always hurt you, that is when the battle come. Because that is when you no longer fight for yourself. But those around you, those you care for.
    And that fight is often very isolated, and in our modern day, you not only have to carry that fight. But the world around you.
    Mental health is still one of those things in the medical world where humans has a long way to go. A lot of what is done, and how its viewed does more damage than good.
    And as we see with Chester, it does not matter who you are. Chronical mental illness is one of the hardest things to live with. And unlike many other illnesses, the help is very limited.
    Linkin Park always meant a lot to me, I was a teenager when they made it big. And they made so many amazing songs. And the influence they had on music is almost unrivaled, so many modern bands was and is influences by LP..
    I do have an emotional favorite song though.
    I have "some" tattoos, and I have designed them myself, with the old Norse way of being used to tell my own story with them.
    So I do not have things from songs, or poems, or pictures whatever.
    Other than one thing. LP have a song called " This is my December " Not one of there most known, but I listened to it a lot.
    And I have in my tattoo the " This is my December " as a ode to LP. the only connection I have to any lyrics or band, so it means something.
    It also made sense because I am born in December, so it still tells that story. plus other connections to December.
    But for that reason I would say that is the most important LP song for me, can't say if its my favorite.

      Completely agree. I'm a CBT therapist here in the UK, and so much of what we do is very "prescriptive", like a one-size-fits-all, which in fairness DOES work for MOST people, but the assumption that it will then work for everyone is really harmful. More often than not my therapy ends up turning much more into "just having a nice chat", because sometimes people just need someone, anyone, to be there.

    • @mattijohansen3471
      @mattijohansen3471 Před rokem

      @@control2XS Indeed. Its a big issue that mental healthcare when is done best, is done the same way all other medical issues are handled. Because that is not a good way to deal with it. There are no book that can give you ONE correct answer to deal with something, its not a broken bone, its not a virus. Its different from every patient, and on top of that, every patient will need a different way to deal with it, the same way some people is allergic to some medication. But as you say, its very much box thinking. And many doctors think they have the answer, the answer a book told them years ago, so they often forget to listen. Or is just so restricted by the system, that they can't really offer anything that would help. Often people with chronical mental illness gets "help" for a large amount, but it does nothing. And if you helped them outside the fixed system. Then you could give them much more meaningful help for a much lower cost.
      But the system is build to fail. And its still very much a stigma, so there are few speaking the case of it, even though its one of the biggest issues human face in the modern age.
      Cancer patients have TV shows, public campaigns, massive funding. Year after year. Mental illness is lucky if they get public funding. There is no tv shows or national funding campaign. Despite more suffer from mental issues than cancer.
      An other way to highlight the issue.
      You have a doctor for the eyes, one that deals with bones. One for when your lungs have an issue. and so on.
      Mental illness has more different diagnosis than all the others combined. Yet there is one doctor for everything, One doctor that is meant to deal with all the different types. Imagine if you where told the eye doctor was gonna be the one who did your heart surgery.
      The way humans think mental healthcare needs to be redone. completely.

      The way you put depression in the words you said it made me realize that it is one of the most difficult things to deal with in life, but we can get through it with the help of friends and family. Finding someone else who is into Norse Mythology like me makes me feel not alone it the sense that we just want a community and that we want to protect in any way we can.

    In a "making of" video for Given Up, chester makes a joke about singing into a popper stopper. "Hey chester what is that thing?" "It's there so that only pure rock gets through". What I found incredible about the joke was he flicks the stopper in front of and away from his face while changing from clean singing to fry screaming and back in like half a second lol. A lot of people get caught up on comparing his singing to other styles of singing; whereas, you dissected it as it was presented irrespective of other artists. When I first heard this song back in 2008 it instantly struck me as the best, most complete, most honest description of being in a major depressive episode that had ever been recorded. Fifteen years later, it's still pretty much in my top spot.
    I think any time his songs/lyrics have been described as a "cry for help", especially in hindsight given how he left us, it misses the point. He wasn't crying out for help. He already had it. He was always very open about his demons. Everyone around him and in his life knew it and loved and supported him. The songs weren't cries for help - they were Chester sharing himself with the world.
    He gave people like me, who were ashamed of the stigma, questioning our own moral character, thinking we were lazy or overly sensitive, and every other possible type of negative self-image...he gave us a voice big enough and loud enough to be heard by billions. We could point to Chester and say "if you want to understand me, listen to him - we're very much the same".

    Holy-what-the-fuck! So, I've been a moderate fan of Linkin Park since they came out. I've known Chester was a really incredible singer, but I'd never actually heard him live. Shit, man. This dude is on a different level in a higher league of an even more complicated sport. I'm seriously blown away. Unreal talent that guy was.

  • @MichaelPallada
    @MichaelPallada Před rokem +1

    What you said about the screaming and that he doesn't need a run up fpr the screaming part. I've seen Linkin Park 3 times live and he really doesn't. What blew my mind the most is that he could switch from screaming to flawless singing within a second. And then go back without a hitch. Still amazes me to this day.

    The 2 things I’m taking from this video is A, You’re probably the only vocal coach who truly breaks down what is being done & then teaches it
    & B, Chester was just an absolute master
    All the signs were there I think many of us listened to LP when we were young so didn’t truly understand, he saved millions but we couldn’t save him 💔

    LP recently dropped a 'new' song called 'Lost' a few weeks ago. It was actually originally recorded back in '03 while they were making their second album 'Meteora.' The only reason it didn't make it onto the album at the time according to Mike was bc it was too similar in energy, message, and vibe as 'Numb' so they shelved it. But they just did a re-release of 'Meteora' for the 20th anniversary of that album and put it on there. They didn't do any further production or anything before releasing it either so how we're hearing it today is exactly how it sounded when they first recorded it 20y ago. A lot of LP's songs in hindsight you realize just how much pain Chester was in. This song ('Given Up') really showed how much he was struggling. He was literally screaming for help. That 17s long scream will never be matched, let alone beaten. If you listen to the song on the record, though, there isn't that little break like there is in this vid. He screams for the full 17s. They do the clapping at the beginning bc that's how the song starts on the record. The little things he does like hitting his head and and the shaking when he says 'hyperventilate' and stuff isn't just for show. He actually feels like that

    I always find it hard to listen to Chester, I can relate to all the pain he put in to all his work and as someone who has also been severly depressed for my entire life, it is disheartening to think that if he couldn't make it work, how do I stand even a chance? I miss him so much. And as always I loved your analysis. Thank you!

    Hello gorgeous.
    I always enjoy your reactions, you just have a more relatable way to explain it. Thank you!
    I always tell people this and I hope you find it useful. After the world lost Chester, I cannot listen to this song and the one after it (on the album Minutes to Midnight) back to back anymore. It just crushes me to hear them both one after another. This one talks about him wanting to die and "Leave Out All The Rest" talks about afterwards. If you want to talk about his expression and emotion rather than just his "god tier" voice - this might be your candidate.
    Also, I rather like you in after edits when you are just chillin' around with a soft hoodie on 😍
