- Important info!! So 15" seems to be too much to take off of your bust measurement, especially if you have a larger bust size than I do. I think due to the yarn I was using, it made the project grow more so than it normally would. I would instead suggest taking off 10" instead of 15". When I measured my top at the end (after wearing) it was 21.5" long whereas my bust size is 31.5 -32" so it seems my project "grew/stretched" about 5".
If you're using the exact yarn I'm using, be aware that it grows quite a bit. So 15" still may be the right call for your project.
This is for all my beginner crocheters out there! I made this in-depth tutorial to hopefully help you out with constructing your first crochet top. It's fairly simple and includes all beginner-friendly stitches. Hope you enjoy ! xx

Heyy, i started one but it came out too small in it's length, it doesn't even reach my back. How would you suggest that i make it bigger? I am new to crochet and this is my first real project. Thank you!!
The tutorial is very well explained, just my boobs that it's too small that taking off 15" was too much lol thank you!!
Thank you for letting me know that it was too small! I don't have pattern testers for my videos, so comments always help me out! To make it bigger, I would suggest adding more half double crochets along the sides of the top. So instead of going straight into making the straps, I would chain 1 and flip your top so you are working on the side of it. Then I would make rows of half double crochet until you are satisfied with how much more length it has. Then I would fasten off that side and do the same thing to the other side of the top. After you are done with that, then I would attach the yarn into one of the corners of the top and then finish the straps and border portion of the video.
I will also put a note here for everyone else that 15" seems to be too much to take off of your bust measurement. I think due to the yarn I was using, it made the project grow more so than it normally would. I would instead suggest taking off 10" instead of 15". When I measured my top it was 21.5" long whereas my bust size is 31.5 -32" so it seems my project "grew/stretched" about 5".
@@brittanyalicecrochet thank you!! That was very helpful, your tutorial is great and i am very glad for the help...
I will finish my project soon. Thank you so much! 💕💕
@@dayanereis3033 hey, if you dont mind me asking..if you have finished, what was your measurement A and what did u end up doing for a nice fit? thanks
@@remkenyon heyy, i don't mind at all...
I still haven't finish, but it ended up with 18 inches.
After I finished the steps on the video, i repeated the process in each side, starting with a 4.5 inchs chain and half double crochet until the end, i connected the new piece with the old with single crochets.
Was that clear?
Depends on how tight your stitches are
Girl, I did this tonight in sage green and it took me about 2 hours. This tutorial was incredibly easy to follow and was very helpful. This is the first top I ever made and I’m so proud, thank you!!
yay, i'm so glad this was helpful for you! happy crocheting ^_^
I’m just about to try it
Hi can you tell me how much yard you used
That’s awesome!
2 hours, it's very fast. I made it during 5 days🥲
a tip for people that are not that good in English: put the video on 0.75 speed. It's much more easier to understand what she's saying! And thank you for this simple tutorial!
You did a really good job of showing which is the "next" loop. That's something I was always confused with crochet.
TIP FROM BEGINNER.
This is an amazing thing to make as a beginner, it's the second thing I've ever made in crochet, I used thicker, multicolour yarn to make it a little easier and less see through, it definitely works
Do u use the hook size the yarn says on packaging or same as them in the vid
@@yummyplayzroblox8898you should always use the same as the vid, the hook size on the packaging is just a suggestion for the yarn weight. But you can use any size hook with any yarn to change the effect, for example a thicker yarn with a smaller hook will make less gaps and vice versa, usually best to follow the tutorials hook size or close to it if you want to achieve the same affect.
this top was the first project i ever did, and totally helped me start crocheting. I just revisited this pattern to use up about half a skein of some self-striping yarn, and the result is so cute and basically looks like cotton candy (i used a basic white yarn for the border and straps and it contrasts so nicely)
Adorable! :)
if my math teacher can teach math like how she teaches to crochet a top, I would actually cry tears of joy.
haha this is a great comment!
This tutorial was fantastic! I have only been crocheting for like 6 months but this was so easy to follow and the pattern only took me a few hours to complete! Thank you!!!
Yay! Glad to help :)
Quick Tip for people with a slightly larger bust size: instead of just crossing the straps in the back, create a faux halter neck by knotting the straps just behind the neck at the height that sits best on you. Then just cross and lace up like in the video - this helps the top sit at the right height and not slip down into dangerous nip slip territory 😂 hope this helps someone! Great video and super pattern x
Awesome tip! Thank you :)
Super easy, extremely well explained and made with such love! I've been crocheting for years but I always learn something from your vids. Also THANK YOU for. Showing how to measure around the body that's something not most creator show and it's super helpful for a beginner. 💜💜💜💜
Thank you so much for the kind comment! I’m glad it’s been helpful for you 💗
This top is sooo cute! I have never crocheted before but you made it seem so easy I HAD to try. In the end it took me about two days to finish it (representation for my fellow slow learners here), a lot of grumpiness because I had to re-do some parts.... (the straps made me go insane but that is definitely my fault, I tried the lazy method and ofc it came back to bite me in the ass).
In the end it came out kinda lumpy and I ran out of the same color yarn so I had to switch in the middle of it but I kept going just for fun... Now I have a lumpy white top with a splotch of black, but I am SO PROUD of myself. Am I going to wear it? Probably not. Will I try again and put to test the things I learned while doing this first try? DEFINITELY.
Thank you so much for having the patience of sharing this tutorial with all of us, your explanations were super clear and the fact that you went back and showed each step even if you had already explained it beforehand made it really easy to follow!! All the love!
That's awesome! The straps would definitely drive me crazy as a beginner lol. When I first started crocheting, I used to make tops like this that I absolutely never wore but I made them because it was fun and it helped me learn :)
You should definitely keep the top, even if you won’t wear it. That way you can see your progress
@@alexf1531 I will DEFINITELY keep it. I first thought I could reuse the yarn but I think it's more fun to preserve my frankentop so I can see the progress compared to the new ones I make! 😊
thank you so much! this is the realest comment i’ve ever seen regarding the knitting/crocheting community. it sounds like you just had fun while learning something new. amazing
(btw i also re-did the straps but the second time i used a smaller hook so the stitches automatically became a little bit tighter/neater). i am not completely finished but am already at the bottom edge whoo)
@@claudia8274 lmao frankentop is such a cute name
i just made this in like teal blue and it is sooo cute !! i totally didn’t read the description first but it still fit perfect and i’m a tight, slow crocheter so it took me probably 4 hours with breaks here and there, thank you!!!
that's awesome! i'm so glad it still worked for you :)
This is the best step by step instructions I have ever seen in a crochet video!! Not only is the work super cute but I never once felt intimidated or scared to try what you were doing throughout the whole thing!! Thank you so much!!
I’m really happy to hear that!
Hey I just wanted to thank you so much for this tutorial. It was ambitious but this is the first crochet project I have ever attempted. When I started the top, I knew nothing at all about how to crochet. This tutorial by itself taught me the basics and gave me the confidence to learn a new skill. It was so easy to follow and had the repetition I needed to learn each stitch. I have watched each part multiple times. My top is now almost complete and i am ready to try new projects. Thanks again.
I just finished my first top! Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial, it took me about 3 days to finish it but it was so worth it ☺️
This will probs get lost in a sea of comments but this just came back onto my feed and I wanted to thank you. For some reason, despite never looking up crocheted anything before, this video came onto my feed a year or two ago. In typical ADHD fashion, I was like omg WHAT is this hobby I need it NOW. So I bought hooks. I bought the wrong kind of yarn. I made this top in scratchy acrylic, then again in weight 4 cotton. Since then, I haven't stopped. I joined a handicrafter group at my library and met a million old ladies who are really close with me now. I've made so many projects, from stuffies to wearables, and I've created so many gifts for friends and family. I thought it was something I'd abandon quickly, but I haven't, and I wanted to thank you for that. You're the whole reason I have all of these things in my life that I love so, so much.
So sweet,I'm glad you shared this ❤. I was just reading thru the comments.
i just finished mine and i'm so happy!! my first project!! thank you for the super clear, well-paced instructions. i feel super motivated to try new things now!!
That's awesome to hear! Thank you for watching :)
I just finished this today and I am soooo happy with it, THANK YOU BRITTANY!!!! ♡ It was my first ever crochet project too! Thank you being such a beautiful Guide & bridging me into this Craft that I will continue pouring into for the rest of my Life.
omg thank u so much!!! this was my first project and it ended up really well, i’m so excited that i found you bc your tutorial is really helpful for beginners like me lol
i deeply appreciate your time and your willingness 🥰❤️
this is my first crochet project since i was a kid. soooo easy to follow, and only took me about 3 days! (i have a toddler and little time😅) definitely gonna follow more of your tutorials!!❤
I just started crocheting and been struggle to try follow up with “easy” tutorials doing the granny square. Felt like giving up, but after watching this and tried making this I’m finally done with my first project! So happy! It was easy to follow, really good explanation! Took me two days 😆 it’s not the best but still proud! ❤
This was my first wearable crochet project, and I'm very proud at how it turned out! your tutorial was very clear and easy to follow, thanks a lot for this video!
I never comment on CZcams videos, but this tutorial was amazing! This was my first ever crochet creation I made and it turned out so good. I was struggling at the start of learning crochet from watching other tutorials, but this video laid it out in a way that was so clear and easy to understand as a beginner. Thank you so much!! I’m so satisfied with my top :)
Wonderful! I'm happy to hear that! Thank you for watching :)
i made this in a few hours, keeping the 10" margin to subtract from measurement A, and it turned out so well that i came back to your channel to look for further crochet projects. Thank you!
You are literally the ONLY channel who tought me like a real beginner!!!!❤ i've never crocheted before, but your tutorial was literally perfect. I know how to crochet now thanks to you🥺 thank you so much for being so detailed, i appreciate it, truly!!❤❤❤
I'm so happy I was able to help you get started :)
This is one of the easiest videos I’ve ever watched I did it step by step with her and it ending up looking great! It was my first top I ever made and I’m so proud! If your wondering if this is a good video to help you I highly recommend!! It took me around 2 days and it was worth it 😆😆❤️
Lovely to hear! Thanks for watching
first off, this tutorial was amazing! super easy to follow and totally beginner-friendly. i’ve only ever crocheted a teeny single crochet scarf before, but i wanted to try this and it looked easy enough. in total this top probably took me about 8 hours to complete, but it was so worth it. i learned a lot of new stitches doing this and i’m so proud of how it turned out!
my measurement A worked great. i took 15” off and it worked just fine! on the other hand, my measurement B was kind of tough. my initial measurement was 6” (i’m a B cup), and even though i wanted kind of a longer top, i was worried it might mess up the pattern so i went with 5.” now that i’m finished, i really wish i had gone till 6” or even 7” as that would’ve worked better for the length i wanted. in the end though, i ended up with exactly what was shown in the video and it’s still super cute!
despite the rounded corners, i’m planning on going back in on the bottom and adding a few more inches of half double crochet stitches to it. hopefully that’ll work! does anyone have any other ideas for expanding it??
edit: instead of adding more rows, i think i’m going to crochet a lace pattern around the bottom to make it longer! i’ll do another update when it’s done.
Amazing tutorial! Tried this to refreshen my skills, and it came out perfect. Gifted it to my mother in law and she LOVED it.
Just finished mine! Worked on it over a few days, it's a little lumpy but my first project that wasn't a blanket and the first thing I've finished! Thank you for a clear, simple and fun project 😊
Awesome! Thank you for watching :)
im still making mine currently xP but im really enjoying the whole process and your tutorials are just *chefs kiss* i used your “crochet for absolute beginners” series to practice before i started this project and it was all so helpful!!! thank you :)
my first ever crotchet top project and let me tell u i loved it! the steps very easy to understand!
Thanks a ton!
Omg I loved this tutorial! I just started crocheting for the first time ever yesterday and decided to do some research on how, I decided I wanted to make a top and I found your tutorial. It was super easy to follow and really fun to make, thank you so much for contributing to my first crochet project, I'm so proud of it and I love it so much!!!! Thank you❤❤❤
thank you!!! i’m a beginnnerrr corcheter and this is the first top i crocheted it took like 8 hours… but it’s so cute and the tutorial was so so easy to follow once i got it down! thank you again omg
So easy to make. Took me a minute but I did it and it’s my first crochet project!! Thank you!!
this top is absolutely amazing!! i finished it in like four hours and i’m so happy with the end product. The tutorial was well explained and although i made a bit of adjustments to mine i still love the clear instructions given! thank you so much
edit: i made multiple of these tops and also made a post on insta and everyone fell in love instantly and i’ve also made two for someone else once again thank you so so much for this tut omgg!
Love it! Thanks so much for watching :)
This is honedtly the best tutorial ever! Every other beginner top tutorial i watched was going too quick and not showing closeups of what loop to crochet in. This one however was the easiest and best tutorial!
Thank you so much for making this! I've never crochet a single stitch in my life but with this I actually made a top from knowing absolutely nothing!! I can't believe it haha. It's really not as neat as yours and it took me like 10hrs over a few days (yes I got a bit obsessed haha) but I actually made something and it's really cute! Thank you so much :))
To anyone wondering whether to do it, I say go for it!! It's super fun and this tutorial makes it easy to understand:) just replay things if you need to!
i just made this in like 5 hours and i'm really happy with how it came out! this was my first ever crohet project and it was super easy to follow. thank you so much!!
What yarn did u buy? I bought what I thought was the right yarn but it’s like bending in on itself and the strings are separating
@@FrogBean333 i bought a red heart super saver roll. make sure you’re using the right hook size because that could be why your thread is splitting.
i finished this the other day. thank you so much! such a simple and beautiful pattern.
I'm glad you enjoyed! :)
Omg I love how you patiently describe every step. Thank you!
This is SUCH a helpful tutorial. My first one is a bit wonky but that's completely on me for not using the right size needle. I'm sure my next one will be better! Thank you so much for making this 😁😁
i love how this top looks, the only thing i found really hard was crocheting the last part. i couldn’t find the holes at all and i had to kinda make it up. now one of the back sides looks neat and the other is really messy but i loved the tutorial
That’s kinda what I normally do too, it really does just take practice ! glad you enjoyed the rest of it though :)
I just finished right now, it worked really well also the explanation is very well and I could clearly understand the instructions. Going to make more of your tutorials:)
I’m so glad you enjoyed! :)
Thankyou for being so close up and in depth it really helps since I’m a visual learner:)
This was my first ever crochet project n it took me 3 days! Thank you so much for a through tutorial, I've watched many videos earlier but yours actually made me want to take action. Gonna follow more of your tutorials for sure!! :)
That's great to hear! I'm glad you enjoyed :)

Yay! It’s okay just keep having fun :)
thank you so much for this tutorial! this was the first thing i ever crocheted, i used shitty $1 acrylic yarn, a horrible old crochet hook and i somehow still managed to make something that at least looks good in pictures 😂 i made so many mistakes, skipped crochet loops, made new ones etc but im so proud of myself 😇
that's awesome! glad you enjoyed :)

If i wanted to make it longer, do i just add more rows? (I’m only 2 mins in lol so idk which part you’d keep growing it yk)

it was so cool seeing how a top like this was made, i’ve always wanted to crochet a top, this tutorial seems so simple to follow so once i get a nice coloured wool to use, i’ll be returning to rewatch
edit: i forgot to update. personally, the top didn’t work for me, i used the measurements and it was a lot smaller. even after trying a different way it didn’t work. this is probably due to the wool i used, because it’s worked well for everyone else

This tutorial is amazing! I have never crocheted before this project and i was scared to be overwhelmed, but thanks to you i'm already halfway there in making my first top! Hi! I love this video, it is so easy to follow and extremely well explained. I was just wondering whether the wool you used was thick or thin? :)
thank you! It is a medium (size 4) yarn, which is also called worsted, aran, or afghan.
@@brittanyalicecrochet Okay thank you very much! Would this top be able to be crocheted using thinner or thicker crochet too?
@@edenjones9999 yep! You can use whatever size you’d like! Just be aware when making the border that using a thinner yarn will make it smaller and using a thicker yarn will make it bigger. So if you just keep that in mind you can easily adjust it to the yarn size you have

I just made this top in white and I’m in love. Best video explaining everything! 👏🏼
Awesome, glad you liked it!
Hi, I followed your video as my very first go at crochet and I ended up with too short straps as I didn't realise that they'd be woven to the back as well. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct this or add more length to the straps? I love your video by the way! Pretty easy to follow :)
Hmmm, maybe you can attach your yarn to the end of the strap and make another chain off of the strap followed by slip stitches just like you did before! Hopefully that will help :)
Thanks so much! I'll try that out :)
