  • The "Crystal Tree" project is one of those accidental projects where my "Plan A" turned into "Plan 17" after a lot of new lessons were learned and compensated for. This a clear resin, willow tree and bush project that can be used as a lamp etc. Purchase this project at: www.artforour....
100% of the profit is donated to Operation Underground Railroad to support the fight against child trafficking.

Here are my commonly used tools/equipment if you'd like to try them out....even if you can't find what you need, any purchases in Amazon using these links helps us raise money for O.U.R.
    - Lathe: (amzn.to/3orYsOy) this Laguna lathe is freaking amazing, very well built, solid, strong, variable speed, 110 or 220 volt. I couldn't have designed it better. This Wen lathe was my first trusty starter lathe, great place to start this hobby: amzn.to/3aqIIGH
    - Lathe tools: (amzn.to/3agd3ay) carbide tip, (amzn.to/3t5iMsA) great beginner set
    - File Sander: (amzn.to/36o3hlE), this is the cheapest and highest quality I've found. Fantastic for those hard to get to sanding projects.
    - Carving tool: (amzn.to/2MjTd6x), Rotozips are awesome, a little too powerful for small detail but great for roughing out the medium sized projects.
    - Angle Grinder: (amzn.to/36lgewG), one of my most indispensable tools, (amzn.to/3iXtNHW) the flat head helps get into tight spaces, carving and sanding disks are a life saver.
    - Grinder Carving Disk: (amzn.to/39oWqKG), this is a really great disk for roughing out medium sized projects
    - Grinder Sanding Disks: (amzn.to/3cj91Rv), fantastic for sanding and minor-moderate shaping stages
    - Round Sanding System: (amzn.to/3r11N8Q) sleeves go around an inflatable ball (amzn.to/2KVCUvW )or make your own foam ball, attaches to a drill, great for tight corners.
    - Palm Sander: (amzn.to/3r1mJg8), the most important sanding tool, used on almost every job. I like the size of the sand paper for both this and on the lathe by hand.
    - Chain Saw: (amzn.to/2MbWNj2), has worked well for years, I also bought this electric one (amzn.to/3qZOqpp) for the quieter in the garage projects
    - Oscillating Tool: (amzn.to/3puK4q1) great for cutting and sanding sharp corners and tight spots.
    - Super Glue: (amzn.to/3pFg5vT) thin and runny, perfect for stabilizing bark or other unstable wood.
    - Resin: TotalBoat.com has been gracious enough to donate resin for my future projects, given them some love! You can get 15% off using my code: preece15
    - Pigments: amzn.to/3sYC5ng, great quality for resin
    - Pressure Pot: (amzn.to/3tfp1u2) 5 gallon for the big resin projects to get rid of bubbles, or (amzn.to/3pwX0M8) for the smaller average jobs 2.5 gallon, both need minor modifications to work.
    - Protection: (amzn.to/39t3lm0), best face shield yet for carving and lathe work. Respirator: HIGHLY recommended for wood and resin work, speaking as a Dr, I'm telling you to protect those lungs: amzn.to/3tqYWbA and those ears: amzn.to/3qa9xW2

    Great Job Dan
You need to make a temporary mold to maintain the out side shape when casting.
    1. turn shape on project.
2.put 2 coats of sealer (any kind, it will be turned off later)
3.chisel, router, gouge (what ever it takes)in a scrap piece of wood to the rough outside shape of the piece .Its not fussy. Big enough scrap to cover your window you intend to cut in your piece.
    4. wax your project with past wax or use a release agent.
5.mix up Bondo. Its two parts A and B. Its auto body filler. Buy it at auto parts store, or Harbor Fright.
6.spread the bondo on both your project and the scrap piece and clamp to project. (You may need to do this step twice depending on how good the mold looks after the two are separated)
    7separate the two.
8.hollow out your project(making sure not to go past what the mold covers.( before hollowing wax project then hollow, that way plastic only sticks to intended surface)
9.put sealer on mold, Use wax or use parting agent on mold (we don't want the mold the stick to project)
10.place mold over cavity, clamp and seal out side perimeter with hot glue or clay.
    11.Pour. And GOOD LUCK
You can use the same mold to do the other side of project. And save that mold for future projects just rebondo to fit new shape.
This is how I use to transfer shapes in my model / mold shop
DO NOT LET YOUR MOLD EXTEND PAST THE CENTER LINE OF PROJECT OR IT CAN NOT BE SEPARATED !!!!
Sorry its so long any questions contact me.

Dan, I enjoy your videos so much. I've just been watching for a little over a month, and I have to say, they really feed my soul. I'll never turn anything on a lathe, but I do paint, knit and crochet, though I'm far from a "fireball". I'm not a slow knitter, and I'm not a fast knitter ... I"m more of a half-fast knitter. 😁
Anyhow, watching the creativity of folks like you is so nourishing, and hearing you narrate the process is such an integral part of that.
And last, but far from least, is the good work that this supports. Onward and upward!

Dan, You are very welcome. I just finished watching you white birch turn. Absolutely stunning! I am an artist and would like to donate some of my pieces to your wonderful cause. This cause tugs at my heart. I work with polymer clay, from which I make jewelry. I do paint pouring on coasters and canvas. I am a very eclectic artist. I also paint with oils, acrylic and watercolors. My favorite thing was working with resin and alcohol ink. Unfortunately, my resistance to the fumes dropped and I became severely allergic to it. I gave another wood turner a few pieces of my resin that he in turn incorporated it in a bowl. I was honored. I’ll click on your link and join up. My studio is overflowing with my work. If you would like, send me a friend at Robin M. Shay, you can get an idea of what I do. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. 😊

I saw another woodturning artist who does resin/wood bowls and he actually takes sanding to another level by using the lathe and an electric drill with sanding disks seems to work very fast for him.

I love good music and so when under the knife for I don't remember, several times cut on to the point my skin on my back just feels like a foreign skin or like a jacket sort of.... I had woke up to the surgeon just finishing up on my lower back and I said, wow doc, some really hip music and he tells them to put me under and I begged to not have to go to sleep but before he finished it up, I was out again. He had that surgery room just vibrating hard to some rockabilly music. He always had a hard time keeping me under long enough to get through and once I told him about a better drill tool as it had some variable speeds that I felt handy. Some of the tools are really old antiques and should retire but you guys use them to open us up. I really liked this lamp and might just try it with a few spins of my own on it. Liked the branches really the most.

Is it possible & safe, to drill deep caves/holes in the right wood, or use the natural, caves/holes, for pieces, of little rough chunks of Amethyst, Rose quartz, cool pieces of tree gum 2,resin in, u wouldn't want those chips flying 2wards you, I WAS JUST THINKING OUT LOUD
