In this week's video I turn a snowman/penguin (Not really sure which one it looks more like) from an old bowling pin. The pin was made from solid maple with a plastic coating.
The hat body is Iroko and the base is Panga Panga.
It's all been sanded to 1200 grit and finished with sanding sealer and wood wax.
Let me know what you think?

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so. - Jak na to + styl
Do you think this finished piece looks more like s snowman, or a penguin in a top hat? 😂😁 Merry Christmas!
🐧
Penguin
Both, either and or Harry! Happy Christmas ☃️
A very cute penguin! Hope that was what you were shooting for! 🤣
Beautiful penguin, but take the collar off.
Just a note to anyone who might want to try this, you should know that bowling pins often have a significant void in the base. I've dismantled many of them in my hobby and you typically see a couple holes about 30mm drilled thru the inner layers. If you were turning a pin and hit one of those holes, a very nasty accident could result.
That’s why I think it’s great that these people use epoxy usually lol
😶thaaannks....
Called thinning the herd
You could see the void very clearly when he drilled the belly holes...
The grain on the brim of the hat is absolutely gorgeous
I would often watch my grandfather carving bowling pins into candlesticks on his lathe almost 60 years ago. Thanks for the memories!
Used to live near Corry, Pennsylvania. It had a bowling pin factory. You could get a pickup full of seconds blanks and scraps for a buck or two. They were loaded by a conveyor belt. It was all maple I believe and burnt real well in the old coal furnace and fireplace. This was in the 50s and 60s.
Is it still there? I live over near Bradford.
@@williamkeene9032 Man, I don't think so. I lived outside of Titusville at that time. And that was back in the sixties. No longerin the area.
@saddletramp6935 wow, that was a few years ago. Thanx.
Looks like a Snoguin to me, awesome work Harry. About 50 years ago I had a bowling ball, took off the plastic coating and made a table lamp out of it, then I got married, never seen it since. Cheers and seasons greetings.
😂😂
Your wife didn't throw it away, your mother-in-law absconded with it!

Aww I love when old things get new lives
That was fun to watch! The hat is adorable, it all is! Using the original paint for his collar really brings it together. Shows his origin. I will always think of this snowman when I see a bowling pin! Well done!
Brilliant job done
My friend and I did the bowling pin thing in the 50s! We made some beautiful lamps!
Man that is incredible! If I ever came across something like that I would 💯% buy it. That would be one of those things you look forward to getting out at Christman and enjoy looking at.
Thank you very much Josh! I have a website, harrysmithwoodturning.com, I am always happy to take on commissions if you'd like me to make you one! 😁👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning😮 I'd like one please!!!!
I always wondered what the inside of a bowling pin looked like! What an awesome snowman! 😄
I thought it was a snowman at first but now I’m thinking it kind of looks like a penguin lol
4.5K👌 STAY FROSTY
That is so clever and beautifully done.
I couldn't figure out what was going on until you put in the nose😅. Awesome job 👏
Woow man ! Great job !!!👏👏!!!
I remember when I was a kid my uncle worked at Brunswick and would bring home damaged bowling pins and bowling lane wood by the truckload to burn in their furnace to heat their house on the farm…I’ll bet someone would love to have some of the wood he use to burn….
I actually have a box of bowling pins up in the attic, they've been there at least 15 years...I now know what to do with them. I just need to learn to turn first...
Great video!
My grandpa always had a couple for froe mallets to split shingles and shakes, not many left that hand split anymore.
Wow this is just gorgeous 😍 who knew a bowling pin could look so good? 😍 and the colour of that hat is beautiful! Well done 👏
I love it, especially since I am a bowler.😊
It is humbling to see such a beautiful piece created from something so common. Seeing your work on this is going to get me in trouble spending time to do try some things like it.
Beatiful work and bearifully done!!!
That was awesome
Absolutely stunning!!!!!!!

Thank you very much! Do you think it looks more like a penguin or a snowman? 😁
I think it looks more like a cute penguin 🐧
Very nice It looks like a snowman.
Thank you, David! Glad you like it, Merry Christmas! 😊😁
Beautiful⛄👍🏻
I love it, you should definitely place it for display ! Wish I could make things like this
you can
It looks like a bowling pin, carved into a snowman that looks like a penguin. The best art preserves every phase of change.
Great watching this come together. Thanks for sharing.Merry Christmas
Thank you very much! Do you think it looks more like a penguin or a snowman? 😁
@@HarrySmithWoodturning A penguin. The pointed nose is the differentiator
Usually I can keep up with what's going on in these videos but you had me guessing to the very end. Very cool!
WOW!!!! This is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen, thank you for sharing.
10:40 Bro just equipped a legendary tool! It added +200 to all base stats and an extra 20% to dexterity.
Thanks Harry. A true master at your craft.

Merry Christmas 🙏
That is an awesome penguin in a top hat!
I'm probably the only one who never knew bowling pins were made of wood
What did you think they were made of?
I actually never knew either and I’m mind blown lol

I dont think i ever knew bowling pins were wood!
What did you think they were made of?
OBVIOUSLY, I had NO IDEA or I wouldn't have stated that! I watch/read/learn everything I can about EVERYTHING because of my curious mind.
Wow.....what a great snowman
Thank you very much! I'll have to make more soon! 😁😉
Good job! You really had me wondering what you were up to for a while.
Thank you Tom! Do you think it looks more like a snowman or a penguin? 😊😁
@@HarrySmithWoodturning I thought it looked like a great snowman, I hope no one said otherwise. That you turned it out of a bowling pin just adds to its character. Anyone wanting to copy your idea would have an easy time selling them with a great story to go along with. In my own work I’m always looking for the story to help motivate buyers. Thanks again.
Nice work!
Absolutely love this Harry, so cool.x
Thanks very much Matt! Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
Merry Christmas buddy x
VERY nice work. Doesn't matter which it "is." Can be whatever you want it to be. I think its closer to a snowman, but.....
And I was thinking lamp the whole time, great job
Thank you! Do you think it looks more like a penguin or a snowman? I'm thinking of making a lamp in the new year😁
Snowman for sure . But whatever take you have on it ....its brilliant. Happy Christmas ⛄
That is really nice! Well done. I think its a snowman.

Thank you so much! Do you think it looks more like a penguin or a snowman? 😁
I remember peeling one of these for a carving project, it was a bear of a job!
As I was watching: obviously a snowman! Seriously, that's a penguin with a hat!
Lovely, a snoguin. You had me fooled, At first I thought you ere going to make an exquisite mallet out of the core.
Cute😊

Thank you very much Tammy! Glad you like it, Merry Christmas! 😊😁
That could have been 15 min that I never could have gotten back if I had not fast forward the video to the end I'm so glad I did.
As the inflated troll master for the snowman society, it's clearly a snowman. Beautiful work, Harry, as always. Merry Christmas to all, even the silly folks that think it's a penguin.
Love it. Merry Christmas.
Thank you! Do you think it looks more like a snowman or a penguin? 😊😁
@@HarrySmithWoodturning it looks like a snowman.
Definitely penguin. Would make a nice lamp.
Thanks for watching! Thats a great idea, I'll have to make one in the new year! 😁

@@HarrySmithWoodturning I’d say a penguin but is beautiful
Very smart how you removed the plastic covering.
Thank you! Do you think it looks more like a snowman or a penguin? 😊😁
When you suggested it was your best, I wasn’t expecting a dollar store Christmas decoration to be the end result. To each their own.
If you think this is dollar store quality I'd very much like to know what dollar store you shop at
Just starting to look into metal lathe and wood lathe
Well done :o)
When we used bowling pins in my High School class we had to saw off about 1 1/2 inches of the base to make a flat, solid surface for the spindle.
Just stunning! So very beautiful! I do have a question. Why did you put that piece of plastic around his neck at the very end?
Very good.
Thank you! Do you think it looks more like a snowman or a penguin? 😊😁
It’s a snowman but the wood pattern can easily be a penguin too.
😮 it's beautiful and another wonderful piece. Happy Christmas Harry 🎄 🐧
Thank you very much Sol! Merry Christmas 🎄🎅😊
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😮😮😮
Nice
Penguin,,,,, notice the wings it has that correspond with the original laminate that made up the bowling pin.
👍🏻👍🏻
I was wondering where you were going with it. I resited the urge to fast fwd. It was a bit frustrating lol. But in the end , good job.
My 7th grade shop class made lamps out of bowling pins in 1964
That's cute.
Thank you! Do you think it looks more like a snowman or a penguin? 😊😁
@@HarrySmithWoodturning Snowman
I say snowman. It’s what I thought at some point while watching the video.
Amazing work! Where do you order those metal coins that go on the bottom of the piece?
こけし(日本の伝統的工芸品)でも作るのかと思ったら、ちょっと違いましたね。でも方向性は合っていたみたい。
A better question is why?
Wakodahatchee Chris
It is totally irrelevant as to the hidden identity. The only important issue is the piece itself. Beautiful! Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year.

Thank you! Do you think it looks more like a penguin or a snowman? 😁
Beautiful piece. Mostly snowman but I could see how someone could think penguin. What species of wood are bowling pins made from and are they all the same? Thanks for sharing
Киянку делаю из дерева 👍
Was ready to say snowman till you put the hat on. It seemed to change it to a penguin, especially with the darker wood on the sides that look wings. Some pieces of wood under the nose in a curved mouth pattern would make it a snowman.
Snow man 😊
Snowman
Love that snowman. However I do have a question. Why do you use sawdust after you lacquered your pieces? I'm new to wood working and enjoy learning new things.
Скоро, если человек возьмёт молоток, то это уже будет достижение.
Penguin 😊
This Smith guy is covered in talent, I heard he's also Harry, so it's gonna be hard to rinse off.
Bro, clean that chisel up. You're a CZcams content creator, don't give the trolls an easy target.
Amazing work! What did you treat it with? Thanks.
Thank you Erick! It has been coated with sanding sealer and wood wax. Do you think it looks more like a penguin or a snowman? 😁
CZcams keeps freezing up on me so this is a attempt #4 to try to write a comment. (Oy.)
This is cute Harry, but I’ve liked other things you’ve done a whole lot more.
I knew from the point that you were putting in “buttons“ it was a snowman. Have you ever seen buttons on a penguin. I haven’t.
One could put a top hat on a snowman. Have you ever seen a top hat on a penguin? I haven’t.
kind of looks like the whole lot of them.
Only thing I would have done differently, make the upper portion of the hat in the shape of a bowling pin and recycle the pieces taken off the original bowling pin on to that. Kind of says, once upon a time ... I was a bowling pin. Can ya tell, huh, can ya tell ?
Curious question abotu a technique in the video, what is the significance of the wood shavings @ 13:09
What kind of wood are bowling pins made out of anyway? Oak?
Maple - it says in the description 😮
Need to drill a hole from top to bottom and run a wire through it and put a light on top of it (make it a lamp) maybe put a metal ring around the base to make it a touch lamp 🙄🤔 either way it is nice
