    I'm like the anti of this. Been painting since early 1990s. Always got rid of old ranges, when I moved on. The last time was from Vallejo (minus the metallics) to Kimera. I donated all of my working Vallejos to a friend. I now have just a few focused specials from Golden and other manufacturers. The only thing I haven't gotten rid of is original Citadel washes from the late 1990s (if memory serves), but I rarely use them now, as Kimera and Golden do it for me. It's exactly as you said, an artsy way of painting, but it works for me (I have about 35 years of painting with water colours now, so).

    I have spent a lot of time and money collecting various acrylics, oils, acrylic and alcohol inks, powder pigments, pastels and acrylic paint pens whilst preparing to setup my own hobby channel. But the thing I have invested the most in is creating my own line of paints, contrast paints, washes (oil and acrylic) and effects paints. Scalecolor heavy body paints are actually my favourite mini paints. I do a lot of colour mixing and they have the best magenta I've found. I'm honestly at the point where Id rather thicker paints. It just works better for how I paint. and for airbrushing I still go back to army painter paints.

      I need to sit down and work with them and learn to use them. My main goal with them was to actually use them thicker and go for more of a sketch/"painterly" style, but also need more practice for that.

      I cannot second this enough. Scalecolor's Artist Smooth range are the only paints I own (including Warcolours, Citadel, Golden, AK, Vallejo, and Daler Rowney) that transfer/blend so smoothly right out of the tube that it's almost like I can feel it *through* the brush (in a good way!) They're like painting with butter (again, in a good way!) Their only downside is that you can't-or at least shouldn't attempt to-airbrush them.

    • @Scherdnr
      @Scherdnr Před 11 měsíci +2

      @redrooster7371 Před 11 měsíci

      @@derekgarcia3069give them a try. I find the best way to use them is to 'massage' your thinner or water into the paint on wet palette. They have a lot of fine pigment and this needs to get flowing.

    @hav6301 Před 11 měsíci +8

    I absolutely love the AK 3rd gen, Ive been transitioning to them from Vallejo Model Color, only downside is that the dropper part of the bottles almost always cracks and makes a mess. Some vibrant colors for the new Vallejo Game Color are pretty cool, and the Xpress line although small in range, is great and dries very mat. Vallejo also has a less known range, Mecha Colors, intended for airbrush, but the steel metallics work wonder by brush, their primmers are nice too, a bit satin. You have some hidden gems too in the Vallejo Airbrush paints, such as a Black Metallic.

    • @nameisbad
      @nameisbad Před 9 měsíci

      AK 3rd gem, Kimera and scale 75 are all people need. I legit vouch by that. AK 3rd gen is like other stuff but ten times better. kimera is just very solid for what it does and scale 75 is different yet excellent when mastered, beyond anything imo. (scalecolor i'm talking about mainly).

    I feel like I would get decision fatigue when trying to paint with this many paints. Which is why I've given away 90% of my paints. I kept my inks and artist paints for airbrushing, and a set of craft paints for dry brushing or terrain making. All of my other paints are artist oil paints. Oil paints have made me enjoy painting because acrylic paints were not super fun (if you aren't having fun painting, try oils. they are so much fun to paint with).

    I love using ScaleColor Artist paints. They have amazing matte finish, lovely colours, and they mix nicely. And the biggest advantage for me is that I don't have to shake them. I injured my hand a few years ago and if I overwork it, it hurts and I can't paint. Not having to shake bottles (and things like vibrating shakers are not any better for me) extends the time I can paint by a lot. So I almost exclusively paint with the ScaleColor Artist paints and don't mind having to thin them down. It helped me learn what consistencies I like for painting.

    Fellow paint hoarder here. I find myself migrating towards the Scale 75 Artist colours more and more. Yes, they have to be thinned down, but BUT!. If you are like me and only have about 30min per day for painting, they hold up SUPER well on the wet palette. I load my palette for the week on Monday, and by Sunday, they are just the right consistency for those final glazes. No other brand comes close in this regard. It also helps that they mix well due to the limited pigments.

    Awesome video! Informative and very entertaining! I find myself in the process of unwittingly binge watching your channel. I've just returned to the hobby and you've convinced me to purchase an airbrush. One question I had that I haven't seen a video on (at least I don't think you've covered) is your airbrush spray booth setup. I've seen it in the background and I think its the Master Airbrush brand. I also note you don't have it running out the window (at least that I can see). I've seen other videos of people running the hoses into filtrated buckets (with water in the bottom of the buckets) and I wondered what you might recommend. Also, I'd like to have my airbrush table next to my desk but I've got carpet and a nice PC on it as well, so I'm concerned about potentially causing harm to the PC, the carpet or myself by not having it vented outside. Do you find that you get powdery or any other kind of residue around your work station? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
    Oh, and I've purchased, and still purchasing, a lot of stuff via your amazon links. They're helpful and I like to try and give back in any way I'm able.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the great videos and sharing your love and knowledge of painting and paints.
    I have both Two Thin Coats sets, a bunch of Army Painter, Vallejo, Pro Acryl (including yours and Vince's sets), a few reaper paints, war colours, huge miniatures, GSW and AK interactive. My total is no where near yours, but I have a fairly eclectic collection. My favorites right now are Two Thin Coats and Pro Acryl. Honestly have not tried the War Colours or AK interactive yet, bought them for a specific project that has been printed and primed, but I have not started painting yet. I collect paints simply because I am curious about the properties of different ranges, and if a paint shows up on someone's "best of" list, then I have to check that one out also. The AK Interactive "Anime Figures" set is a great starter for their paints, grab some of that Vallejo Aluminium and you're good to go for a lot of painting.
    Though I do love the Vallejo Express colours: Cardinal Purpple, Gloomy Violet, Plasma Red and Mystic Blue and my Citadel Garaghak's Sewer and Black Legion are always at hand. I'm also a big fan of Reaper's Polished Bone, Aged Bone, Blonde Traid set and Fair Flesh traid, the last of which works great with GW's Seraphim Sepia.
    And I definitely don't have your paint problem, but then I haven't collected sets because someone sent them to me either. :)

    Awesome. You're not alone, I think everyone in the hobby has more than they need and regularly use. I have recently purchased the entire Two Thin Coats range, cos they're awesome. I have the basic Kimera set. A large box of vallejo air. and a shed load of citadel. So maybe 300 paints? I'll count them one day when I'm bored and procrastinating.

    I enjoy collecting paint as well. Probably what kicked off my desire for more paints was finding a great deal of the entire Reaper Core Colors range about four years ago. Since then added the following ranges: Reaper Bones, AK Gen 3, Scale Artists and Instant Colors and new Vallejo Game Color and Express paints. Have many from other ranges like Citadel, ProAcryl and SoFlat and about 100 oils.

    The biggest upside to tube paints is that you don't get air into your paint when used. Bottle paint will dry in the pot faster and faster the less paint remains. If i had the option all my paints would come in tubes since most paints needs to be thinned anyways.

    @Ninjon - Would love to know more about your paint racks! Especially those that would fit Reaper / AK. They look like 3d print. I cut alot of PVC pipe to create vertical storage. Cheap but gets old. Thanks for your Proacryl set btw. They have more paints in their range hitting retail real soon so you'll need more room for them. I do love P3 but only have an armful. Just got some army painter. Not what I expected and dissapointed. I don't think I will ever be a speedpainter!

    I fell down the AK rabbit hole on Sunday when I was having some finish and coverage issues with Vallejo Model Color paints I had used for years. I bought all the non-metallic/transparent Pro Acryl paints this past January, and while it's the best range I've used top to bottom when it comes to expectation and consistency, their range isn't super deep (yet) compared to others and some tones just aren't there yet, so you still reach for -some- things. In my frustration, I remembered that AK has keyed their colors to match VMC colors and have been told they're matt and have great coverage, so I just went on a mini spree.
    36 AK paints arriving from Michigan Toy Soldier this week. Can't imagine I will end up with the suitcase (or even the new 120 paints for x set), but if they perform like I've been told/read, I can't imagine the need for anything between AK and Pro Acryl outside of inks/contrast style stuff. Though ol Alex from Sweden still makes me want to play with So Flat paints...
    /end of Ted Talk gimmick.

    Entertaining and informative per usual. Thank you! I am sure you have enough suggestions about cool projects, but I think it would be awesome if you made a series of videos on a duel of some sort (inquisitor vs demon or some other rival) where you spend a video make the two fighting and then a video describing the painting process (especially OSL for the two different models with their different base tones and textures reflected from the same light source). Just a thought.

    I have 2 AK paints, Saddle Brown and Medium Rust. I bought the crackle medium in hopes of using it with the Medium Rust to make crackling rust effects on some of my robot minis. I haven't figured out how to do that and there are no tutorials on this specific crackle medium. I have watched tutorials on other crackle mediums, they didn't work. I have contacted AK about it, after 2 years, they haven't gotten back to me. I have put the medium down, let it dry, paint the rust over it. I have put the medium down and painted over it while the medium was still wet. I have done both, but the rust first. I have mixed the medium and the rust together in different ratios. I have thinned the rust in different ratios, I have thinned the medium in different ratios. I have done all combinations of all of those, I have not been able to get it to make crackling rust effects. I've even googled how to use this exact crackle medium, no results for this specific medium. Do you have any idea on this, Ninjon?

    It's my goal to collect the entire TurboDork range and I'm over halfway there. xD I love that they have several true yellow and true orange metallic paints; most ranges just assume gold & copper are the same thing/enough when they really aren't.
    Honestly it's kinda cool that you've tried so many different paints because then you have loads of colour match knowledge & paint quality knowledge you can share.
