  • democracynow.org - United Airlines is facing widespread criticism after video surfaced of a doctor being forcibly dragged off a plane by security officers on Sunday, after United overbooked the flight and then demanded some passengers disembark. The flight was leaving from Chicago O’Hare International Airport and was headed to Louisville, Kentucky. When no one volunteered to get off the flight, the 69-year-old man was selected to be forced off the plane. He protested, saying he was a doctor who needed to see patients at a hospital in Kentucky the following morning. The Washington Post reports a fellow passenger says:,"He said, more or less, ’I’m being selected because I’m Chinese.’" Multiple Chicago Department of Aviation security officers then began dragging him through the aisle as fellow passengers screamed. After being removed, the man, who was bloodied by the first removal, attempted to run back onto the plane. He was then forcibly removed a second time. For more, we speak with Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and Norm Stamper, the former chief of the Seattle Police Department and the author of the book "To Protect and Serve: How to Fix America’s Police."

    I read a comment saying this was legal because when the man refused to leave he would be considered as trespassing. This is an example of the police state in our country today. The brutality is escalating, there is no comparison.

    • @fefetines9414
      @fefetines9414 Před 7 lety +27

      Let me be clear, in my opinion, what happened to this man was wrong. The comment I read about trespassing was made by someone who stated they were in law enforcement. To me this shows there is a culture of insensitivity within the police state.

      @fefetines9414 Před 7 lety +21

      Ladygothii12 I agree, I don't think it should be considered trespassing, BUT even if it is considered trespassing under the law, there had to be a better way of handling it. Why resort to this type of violence? I really feel like it is becoming more of the norm to treat people with violence. You see it in other places too - like police officers body slamming students that are mouthing off. It is uncalled for.

    Where did the Real Amy Goodman go? Get the simple facts straight. The flight wasn't overbooked. United didn't do this to accomodate other ticketed passengers. According to the CEO's own statement, 4 United crew member showed up at the last moment after boarding the passengers, and United wanted them on the flight, so they started ejected paying passengers. And one didn't want to get off the plane. United was just being cheap and didn't want to compensate the passengers enough to entice volunteers. It's cheaper to get a cop to bash in someone's head.

This is United Airlines management abusing the power and authority that is available based on Terrorism issues to fix their internal corporate Managerial issue. And the small floor managers in Chicago are only following the rules and protocols set forward by upper management. As the CEO's responses to this proves. The CEO of United Airways should be held directly accountable for United gross misuse and irresponsible use of authority here. Personal charges should be laid against his negligence and abuse of the American peoples trust. But they won't Because Corporations are used as a shield for the actions of the ruling class. His employees have a union contract. They expect the airline to fly them to their next assignments the airline schedules them... You would too... And by the way, airline employees see flight cancellations and flight delays as well, just like everyone else. They do not live a 9 to 5 work day... Appears you have no mercy for the airline employees... Granted this situation should have been handled better, but not many airline employees, their stewards, would drive into the wee hours of the morning to start work at 7 AM when the airline should fly them to their next assignment and let them get a long nights sleep... We should stand together If you don't want to happen to you or your family .

    Watching this video brings bitter tears as it only touches on the the issue of inhumane treatment of individuals becoming "normalized". Thank goodness that the protestations of other passengers can be heard. That causes me to think what I might have done in a similar situation as those dear passengers. I realize the necessity to re-think this event over and over in order to program myself to step up to attempt to block the perpetrators of such inhumane violence. It brings to mind the actions of those proud heroes on the 9/11 flight who were wiling to place themselves in danger though it meant their lives in order to cause the change of the ultimate crash sight to save even more lives. This video should be used as a training tool and for discussion for any number of employers and citizens in the hope that re-education will cause all citizens to be willing to place themselves in harms way to stand up to defend basic human rights wherever they are being abridged. What if there had been several passengers so prepared and willing to intercede for that passenger? Just asking.....

    BOYCOTT UNITED AIRLINES AND DON'T BUY A TICKET FROM THIS INHUMANE AIRLINE, PEOPLE SHOULD BE TREATED WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT. THEY SHOULD FIRED THE CEO AND THE FLIGHT CREW, ITS A SHAME AND DISGUSTING TO SEE THAT AND THE LAME WAY THEY HAVE RESPONDED TO THIS PASSENGER. YOU MEAN JUST MONEY FOR UNITED NOTHING ELSE.

    The man was a doctor and said he had patients to see. I don't understand why United Airlines did not simply allow him to stay on the plan and pick someone else? I usually fly Delta, and think that I will stay away from "The Friendly Skys". I am a 100% service connected disabled retired combat veteran. I would give up my seat to the Doctor due to his patients. Why did they not ask to see if someone would reconsider giving up their seat for the Doctor. Some scary stuff.

    without breach of any rules, the doctor only wanted not to give up his seat.
    the nature of the conflict was merely settlement of contactual dispute upon overbooking .
    therefore, all airlines need to invent a way to handle overbooking. it seems the best is to raise the compensation until passengers are motivated to leave.

    People should forcibly de-board the board room of stockholders and CEO Munoz from his office in the same undignified manner they dragged this humble citizen off the plane. Give 'em a taste of their own medicine and drag their asses off to the street in the name of making room for a worker controlled United Airlines Company. Americans can't be afraid to confront their masters of indignation. Silence is moral abdication. Think big, and show them how to run a real airline business, you can do this as one united mass.

    I am Filipino, I have been refused food in a restaurant in Forth Worth. But this airline event is not racism. This is the fault of that guy for not cooperating with police. The forum is not in an airplane to protest. It is in the courts for our civil rights. For peace and order we need to obey every order given by a police officer, if it is unconstitutional then sue the crap out of them later. The policeman is not the brightest, but the bravest. They most of the times are confused. Let us help them do their job. Why do we only give them respect when we need them. We have to respect them every time. I am in the same boat as that guy. When we were welcomed in this country when we came in, we were also given the privilege to use the roads, parks, hospitals, police and all. What a beautiful country the USA Is. Let us obey the police first then protest later. Please. And thank you to all those that built this country before me.

    Just remember people, this could be you, say, on your Honeymoon, or on the way to a family funeral, or this is how that money you saved for years to go on vacation could be wasted. This could be your mother, father, children, girlfriend. This could be a cancer patient. This could be someone who is struggling with emotional problems. This could be me, or you. All we have to do is take hundreds of dollars of our money and give it to United Airlines.

    Back in the day when the customer was always right they would have taken employees off of a plane to put 4 passengers on that were overbooked. now days they don't give a shit about their paying customers. They got the Patriot Act and their own police force.... and a government that won't say shit when they go overboard. Soon the office of President will be filled by the top board members and majority stock holders of corporations. President Geico, Vice President Exxon-Mobile.

    The flight was NOT overbooked. It was sold out. Big difference.
    1:42 The sad airport cops couldn't keep a bleeding, concussed, dazed, 69 years old man from running away?
    I think other passengers on the flight did fine. The voiced their displeasure and about half eventually stood up and walked out after he ran in bleeding. They were reacting slowly because it was just such a shocking scene. The passengers are speaking up and giving interviews and uploading videos. So the other passengers are above reproach imho.
