- democracynow.org - United Airlines is facing widespread criticism after video surfaced of a doctor being forcibly dragged off a plane by security officers on Sunday, after United overbooked the flight and then demanded some passengers disembark. The flight was leaving from Chicago O’Hare International Airport and was headed to Louisville, Kentucky. When no one volunteered to get off the flight, the 69-year-old man was selected to be forced off the plane. He protested, saying he was a doctor who needed to see patients at a hospital in Kentucky the following morning. The Washington Post reports a fellow passenger says:,"He said, more or less, ’I’m being selected because I’m Chinese.’" Multiple Chicago Department of Aviation security officers then began dragging him through the aisle as fellow passengers screamed. After being removed, the man, who was bloodied by the first removal, attempted to run back onto the plane. He was then forcibly removed a second time. For more, we speak with Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and Norm Stamper, the former chief of the Seattle Police Department and the author of the book "To Protect and Serve: How to Fix America’s Police."

What a terrible thing to do to a human being, what a brutal way to treat a person. Every one should BAN united airline,
absolutely deplorable. not even animals should be treated this way
I agree. He was an animal.
It's an absurd situation. Yes, of course it is. But why the hell most of the people didn't do anything? They just grabed their phones and start recording this disgusting scene. Much respect for the lady that stand up for the doctor while he were being assaulted.
I read a comment saying this was legal because when the man refused to leave he would be considered as trespassing. This is an example of the police state in our country today. The brutality is escalating, there is no comparison.
Let me be clear, in my opinion, what happened to this man was wrong. The comment I read about trespassing was made by someone who stated they were in law enforcement. To me this shows there is a culture of insensitivity within the police state.
Fefe Tines Of course someone in law enforcement would have that pov. They're thugs with badges and a free pass to abuse and kill whoever they want and they stick up for their own no matter what.
George Carlin once said that we have no rights just temporary privileges granted by the State. So true!
How is it trespassing? He paid for the service/ product and he's being denied it for what?!
Ladygothii12 I agree, I don't think it should be considered trespassing, BUT even if it is considered trespassing under the law, there had to be a better way of handling it. Why resort to this type of violence? I really feel like it is becoming more of the norm to treat people with violence. You see it in other places too - like police officers body slamming students that are mouthing off. It is uncalled for.
Boycott!!!! start a meme: Boycott United.
Brand Gardner the airline should be renamed as not United but DIVIDED AIRLINES .
+Atir X I understand the sentiment behind why you say that, and I think I support it.
But suggesting that it be renamed to "Divided Airlines" is really lame.
See my other reply.
GAWD? I'm a snowflake and your an ARTARD.
Bowerick Wowbagger sure then you can crawl around with your mouth open and snowflakes can relieve themselves in your mouth
Now, they doing to Ban Video cellular phones and lie and say it's a safety issues. You have been warned!
Smooth kriminal we got to stop these bastards. Every American has been washed everywhere they go and track but now they want us not to be able to film them like they film us everywhere period that's some bullshit !!!
Smooth kriminal. You took the words right out of my mouth there. A ban on videoing on 'safety' grounds.
Where did the Real Amy Goodman go? Get the simple facts straight. The flight wasn't overbooked. United didn't do this to accomodate other ticketed passengers. According to the CEO's own statement, 4 United crew member showed up at the last moment after boarding the passengers, and United wanted them on the flight, so they started ejected paying passengers. And one didn't want to get off the plane. United was just being cheap and didn't want to compensate the passengers enough to entice volunteers. It's cheaper to get a cop to bash in someone's head.
Unfortunately for them, they have already lost billions in stock because of this.
@Jessman Good. I'm glad their greed cost them in the long run. They didn't want to compensate passengers now they will face financial loss on a grander scale.
@trumpoleon How do you know the flight wasn't overbooked? I wonder why media is reporting it that way if it is false.
Some media is reporting it accurately.
Either way, though, whether it was due to overbooking or wanting the seats for employees, the airline employees and the airport police were dead wrong.
BOYCOTT United Airlines - don't ever fly with them!!!
boycott the airline
boycott united airlines. completely unacceptable and will look forward to hearing how much he sues them for
I would have stood up and said "please... take my seat instead. I'd rather you take my seat than physically assault someone." I don't understand why no one -- especially those taking videos of the assault -- didn't offer their seat voluntarily to keep this doctor from being assaulted.
Pamela Crosby How about United Airlines does not over book. He had a paid ticket.
Ya sure you would lol
If we truly were "Home of the Brave", we would never accept this current police state.
And goodbye America ... miss you already.
America's been dead for quite some time mate, what you are seeing now is just the gradual rotting effect that happens when countries die.
We are rotting out it's true. We are falling behind on everything and now we have this monster of a president regressing us even further. I'm disgusted. Fuck patriotism. Patriotism should be earned and the US is becoming a joke.
Jessman9000 - People always say that, but it never does.
Amanda
I'm fairly certain that this country is doomed, country wide hatred, constant involvement in meaningless wars. A long stream of very stupid politicians being elected into office.... the list goes on.
Oh shut up snowflake! Get a damn grip. A nation goes thru shit. You statement, if you want to call it that, was idiotic. I'll bet you smell like patchouli.
Another $500 and this would never have happened!
I WON'T BE PUTTING MY LIFE IN THE HANDS OF UNITED AIRLINES AGAIN!
NOT WHEN THEY MAKE DECISIONS LIKE THIS!
I'm seeing millions and millions in lawsuits here. The guys who did this are brain dead.
Brand Gardner The doctor may well have brain injuries as well, considering his concussion-like behavior when he re-entered the plane.
The guys who did this are hired to do this and are just following the protocols set in place. This is managements fault.. Worse.. This is United Airlines management abusing the power and authority that is available based on Terrorism issues to fix their internal corporate Managerial issue. And the small floor managers in Chicago are only following the rules and protocols set forward by upper management. As the CEO's responses to this proves. The CEO of United Airways should be held directly accountable for United gross misuse and irresponsible use of authority here. Personal charges should be laid against his negligence and abuse of the American peoples trust. But they won't Because Corporations are used as a shield for the actions of the ruling class. Guys at the bottom will get the blame.. Share holders will pay out the fines and damages while everything moves on the way it was.
Brand Gardner this is my real doctor he is a great guy.. he works on people even when they dont have money... he isnt a bad guy in anyway.....
jerry jah Passenger was forcibly removed by Airport Police... non United employees. The world doesn't need any more high maintenence entitled scene causing meltdown artist on airliners... doctors or not.
But the CEO has already publicly stated that his crew acted appropriately and he stands behind for the way they handled this PAID CUSTOMER for the benefit of the corporation and the CEO's fortune. Totally. What country do you think you're in? America? That's long gone. We the 99% have no rights. "Citizens United", the 1%, declared War on the majority. We are to be used or eliminated. Period.
Board as a doctor, leave as a patient.
This is crazy.
United Airlines motto "Come Fly the FRIENDLY Skies" ????
................. Flights include free Peanuts and BEATINGS.
#BoycottUnitedAirlines #StopAssaultsOnAirplanes
United Airlines be like: Customers are unhappy with our service? we'll beat the shit out of you
United Airlines be like : Don't like our service? The USA only has 1-2 other choices in this Oligopoly.. If worse comes to worse we will just consolidate under their name and our board of directors responsible for these protocols will take a fat pay bonus.
What was it that George Carlin said about "Choice" ?
isn't it standard practice for you amerikanazis to slaughter vietnamese ?
so they didn't charge this guy extra for the special treatment of letting him live .
Bob Saturday Bob, go get your shock treatments.
+Mesut
you wouldn't care if they did that to a black man.
That is no way to treat and old man. At 69 he isn't going to bounce back.
I don't care if that man is asian or black, don't care if he's a farmer or a doctor. They can't do that to someone. this is sick.
All the victims should file a BIG law sue!! United Airlines has to pay for this.
Why don't people boycott this airline so they can keep flying their employees around! Heartless, racists, unfit for this society!!
For the past 5 years my experience with airlines has gone from bad to worse.
Not only the service has turn uglier but also they CHARGE every little thing you ask for.
Honestly I rather drive 8 hours to my destination than flying in the unfriendly sky.
I just BOYCOTT UNITED AIRLINE!
The guy who is saying "good job, the way to go". Should have been the one who got pulled out and beaten up.
This is a Human Rights Issue!! Outrageous!! Appalling!!!
If they'll do it to them, they'll do it to you. United Airlines just proved that they don't care about the safety of their passengers.
This shit pisses me off man
I hope that the doctor wins millions of dollars in a lawsuit. This is pure insanity.
worldwide boycott UA flights
There is absolutely no excuse for United Airlines and the thugs that assaulted this passenger. This is beyond disgusting! I, for one will never book a flight on this airline ever again. Happy to see United stock has fallen significantly since this incident.
Becoming? hahahaha, hello the past 300 years.
XD IKR that's the US by default
UNITED is now to be BOYCOTTED by my entire town of 23.000 people. Please do that in your own communities!!!!!
I WILL NEVER FLY United AGAIN
#NEVERFLYUNITED!
They didn't overbook they wanted to fly their own employees and just threw paid passengers off.
The poor man is clearly in deep shock after he suffered a hideous assault. I doubt he'll ever get over something like that. If it was my father, who is not much older, who had suffered a violation as serious as this at the hands of so-called authorities, forget compensation - and there this must, MUST, cost United millions in damages - I would be out for blood. Bastards.
I am astonished that no one intervened. I don't think I would have been able to keep myself from intervening even if to my own detriment. Can anyone else speak to this? If you don't think you would have intervened, why do think non-intervention is the best decision here.
nicksurfs1 You say that, and I feel the same way but it wouldn't help. they'd just beat the shit out of you too, likely charge you with terrorism or just put you in Guantanamo without charges or trial. They can execute you here "legally" if they want to,or just keep you in prison and torture you indefinitely. NDAA.
+HiThereImFootloose,
Thank you for your response. I didn't know that NDAA applied to Airplanes which were on the ground, but I am not completely familiar with NDAA. I feel I understand your perspective. You would want to stay calm as to not escalate the situation as escalation could harm you as well as the victim. I certainly don't suffer from the issue of habituation to violent stimulus Mrs. Ifill fears. I still have an overwhelming emotional reaction when I see videos like this. I can't imagine how I would feel seeing it in person.
I was in a similar situation and did intervene. Once one person stands up, others will follow. I was so scared to stand up to violent cops that my legs were trembling but I did it. And when I did, others did, too. Nonviolent resistance is the only way we can win.
No one intervened because the cops were armed. All the passengers had were liquor and peanuts.
People who intervened would have been shot. This is AMERIKA dude.
forcible de boarding should be illegal !!!! once on the plane, everything in order, you fly.
Camilo Sanz totally agree, once you have your boarding pass it means you're ready to go. ..
Legal or not, using violence in this way is disgusting!
This is so not cool. They are just dragging him off the plane and just letting him bleed like that. This is what society has came to now. God bless the person that was dragged off. I feel so sorry for him
Everyone on that plane needs to sue for emotional abuse. This is ridiculous.
After this he should own the airline.
WORLDSTAR !!!!!!!
There is some new shit every day! And it is smelling worse and worse!!!
United Airlines better call Saul.
“America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between.”
OSCAR WILDE
It is clear that 4 passengers were removed not because of overbooking. Why no media report it?
This beyond the excuse of the question of training. No job I take on would have me treat another human like this by Physically assaulting and humiliating them just to give up a seat that they already paid for. What are we humans turning into?
United didn't drag anyone off anything. The Airport Police forcibly removed a passenger who refused to walk off the plane.
All the captain had to do was play the Mom/Dad card of _"I'm not moving this plane until 4 of you get off"_ then compensate the volunteers the appropriate amount for the airline's mistake. Or just make the 4 employees take a different flight or a rental car if money wasn't enticing enough. Assaulting passengers and risking lives over this should never be plan A or B or even Q.
Just pass a law that there must be an upgrade to First Class.
This country is becoming something that is so dangerous that it's hard to go be to be humane if it was ever humane at all
I will never use this Airline again
New advertising slogan: Fly United. We'll make you an offer you can't refuse.
Or we'll break your kneecaps.
United Airline will be sued for a lot of money when they can just offered $5,000.00 for anyone to give up the fly, but they chose not to, now they will have to pay more to for settle the law sue. Greedy, unprofessional and human mistreatment is United Airline... I will never fly with the United Airline anymore....
I call BS. You would never see a first class passenger removed like this. This is not normal. We need to unite as citizens of the United States of America and quit falling for all the propaganda that is tearing apart our respect for one another. America is great because of the diversity of its people, not in spite of the diversity of its people.
The Preamble didn't start off saying "We the people except the weak, poor, uneducated, different race__________, different religion_________, etc.
Society is a means to protect, provid and lift the people, not to divide, crush and dispose of them.
"We will re-accommodate paying customers by any means necessary."
- United CEO Oscar Munoz, winner of the Communicator of the Year Award
The CEO bastard call this re-accommodation? He should re-accommodate his employees not a paying costumer!
His employees have a union contract. They expect the airline to fly them to their next assignments the airline schedules them... You would too... And by the way, airline employees see flight cancellations and flight delays as well, just like everyone else. Scully the pilot Tom Hanks played in the movie flying out of New York City lives in California. The pilots and the stewards spend a lot of their lives on the road, in hotels and motels near airports. They do not live a 9 to 5 work day... Appears you have no mercy for the airline employees... Granted this situation should have been handled better, but not many airline employees, their stewards, would drive into the wee hours of the morning to start work at 7 AM when the airline should fly them to their next assignment and let them get a long nights sleep... Or do you believe in sleep?
United Airlines, why don't you leave 4 seats free for emergencies? That way you will never be forced to physically HURT your own patrons.
OMG...what kind of insane simple is this...OMG !?!
That poor man !!!
That black lady doesn't get it. This has nothing to do with a profiled person getting removed from a plane. I am still shocked by violence in all it's forms, as are most people.
Police should not be enforcing corporate policies, they are there for airline security
I will never fly United Airlines as long as I live, don't matter the price.
We should stand together If you don't want to happen to you or your family .
His name is David Đào , he is Vietnamese , He is a doctor and he want to go back to his home to healing his patients ... When I heard he shout I'm was cried ...( I don't good at English)
never fly United
Flying now has become a terrible disaster.
If they offered enough money people would volunteer.
Watching this video brings bitter tears as it only touches on the the issue of inhumane treatment of individuals becoming "normalized". Thank goodness that the protestations of other passengers can be heard. That causes me to think what I might have done in a similar situation as those dear passengers. I realize the necessity to re-think this event over and over in order to program myself to step up to attempt to block the perpetrators of such inhumane violence. It brings to mind the actions of those proud heroes on the 9/11 flight who were wiling to place themselves in danger though it meant their lives in order to cause the change of the ultimate crash sight to save even more lives. This video should be used as a training tool and for discussion for any number of employers and citizens in the hope that re-education will cause all citizens to be willing to place themselves in harms way to stand up to defend basic human rights wherever they are being abridged. What if there had been several passengers so prepared and willing to intercede for that passenger? Just asking.....
BOYCOTT UNITED AIRLINES AND DON'T BUY A TICKET FROM THIS INHUMANE AIRLINE, PEOPLE SHOULD BE TREATED WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT. THEY SHOULD FIRED THE CEO AND THE FLIGHT CREW, ITS A SHAME AND DISGUSTING TO SEE THAT AND THE LAME WAY THEY HAVE RESPONDED TO THIS PASSENGER. YOU MEAN JUST MONEY FOR UNITED NOTHING ELSE.
The man was a doctor and said he had patients to see. I don't understand why United Airlines did not simply allow him to stay on the plan and pick someone else? I usually fly Delta, and think that I will stay away from "The Friendly Skys". I am a 100% service connected disabled retired combat veteran. I would give up my seat to the Doctor due to his patients. Why did they not ask to see if someone would reconsider giving up their seat for the Doctor. Some scary stuff.
Not well trained?. Clearly trained enough to drag you from your seat and slam your face against arm rest.
This is so sad. I'm very disappointed in United Airlines for resorting to violence against this innocent man who paid for his seat, and removing him like some common criminal. They needn't worry about overbooking, the boycotts will take care of it.
I am shocked as to how Barbaric these airlines are!
Why didn't anybody talk about racism for this case? Is it because Trump is also allegedly called racist?
Others were bumped too... By no means is he the lone ranger... Frankly I am sick and tired of minorities playing the RACE card when their luck runs out, especially when race had noting to do with his ass being bumped...
Seems like America is great again...
without breach of any rules, the doctor only wanted not to give up his seat.
the nature of the conflict was merely settlement of contactual dispute upon overbooking .
therefore, all airlines need to invent a way to handle overbooking. it seems the best is to raise the compensation until passengers are motivated to leave.
NO MORE TRAVEL WHIT UNITED
It's definitely no reason to act like a screaming wild banshee...something else is going on here..like mental health issues..
my condolences over the loss of her loved one. Because of her tragic death, I got checked for endometrial cancer and learned I have hyperplasia, a precursor to endometrial cancer, for which I am being treated and hope to prevent from turning into cancer. Ms. Ifill and her family's reporting of her cause of death may save my life
ever time I see this I also cry
"I'm a doctor! Must get back to meth-tucky!"
Fred Gregg
Crack-tucky.
I am so livid right now!
This is WRONG on every sense, Airlines made an error and forcefully removes a paid client. This is such bad business, and it is going to cost this Air Line Company in a big way.
Why do people need to fly anyway except for vacation destinations? With electronics these days, meetings can be held electronically. Stay home and demand telecommuting.
People should forcibly de-board the board room of stockholders and CEO Munoz from his office in the same undignified manner they dragged this humble citizen off the plane. Give 'em a taste of their own medicine and drag their asses off to the street in the name of making room for a worker controlled United Airlines Company. Americans can't be afraid to confront their masters of indignation. Silence is moral abdication. Think big, and show them how to run a real airline business, you can do this as one united mass.
unhuman act to treat the person this way.
so pay and fly, its always safe to fly in America, thank you United Airlines, welldone. Its not public relation problem but violation of human rights.
it sounds like three lions eating a warthog alive
boycott United Airline! !!!!
sue the airline
I am Filipino, I have been refused food in a restaurant in Forth Worth. But this airline event is not racism. This is the fault of that guy for not cooperating with police. The forum is not in an airplane to protest. It is in the courts for our civil rights. For peace and order we need to obey every order given by a police officer, if it is unconstitutional then sue the crap out of them later. The policeman is not the brightest, but the bravest. They most of the times are confused. Let us help them do their job. Why do we only give them respect when we need them. We have to respect them every time. I am in the same boat as that guy. When we were welcomed in this country when we came in, we were also given the privilege to use the roads, parks, hospitals, police and all. What a beautiful country the USA Is. Let us obey the police first then protest later. Please. And thank you to all those that built this country before me.
Disgusting....
Just remember people, this could be you, say, on your Honeymoon, or on the way to a family funeral, or this is how that money you saved for years to go on vacation could be wasted. This could be your mother, father, children, girlfriend. This could be a cancer patient. This could be someone who is struggling with emotional problems. This could be me, or you. All we have to do is take hundreds of dollars of our money and give it to United Airlines.
If it was overbooked, why did the company not think about this before? The passengers paid well and do not deserve to be even asked to "volunteer" to leave. it's the company's fault for not doing the math.
Can we call it fascism yet? Looking at the definition of fascism, I would say that it is well on the way.
That doctor will be richer !
United Airline employee's priority are higher than any passenger, that's the policy !
Back in the day when the customer was always right they would have taken employees off of a plane to put 4 passengers on that were overbooked. now days they don't give a shit about their paying customers. They got the Patriot Act and their own police force.... and a government that won't say shit when they go overboard. Soon the office of President will be filled by the top board members and majority stock holders of corporations. President Geico, Vice President Exxon-Mobile.
Wouldn't it have been great, if at this point, everyone demanded their money back and told UAL they could have the whole damn plane to transport their 4 off duty crew to hell for all anyone else cares.
There is no way I would have stayed on that plane after what they did.
WOW They act as if he did some kind of Crime...He did nothing wrong and really had to get home...he mentioned being at work early..he has a job where he helps people! This is Just Aweful!! Fire those Police officer's!! They are giving other police officers a Bad Rep and no wonder so many are Hated! Thank God for video phones ..we get to see what really goes on.
The flight was NOT overbooked. It was sold out. Big difference.
1:42 The sad airport cops couldn't keep a bleeding, concussed, dazed, 69 years old man from running away?
I think other passengers on the flight did fine. The voiced their displeasure and about half eventually stood up and walked out after he ran in bleeding. They were reacting slowly because it was just such a shocking scene. The passengers are speaking up and giving interviews and uploading videos. So the other passengers are above reproach imho.
What's the matter, United, diplomacy and de-escalation a foreign concept to you?
