Very insightful conversation, thank you, Paul, for inviting Armando.
Venezuela also has the tallest continuous-drop water fall in the world.
One thing that will never change is that countries ultimately either choose to submit to and become enslaved by tyrannical, criminal dictatorships which enrich a few and ultimately destroy the country, or choose to live in a democratic and open society that requires individual responsibility and enormous efforts to improve the many flaws that all people and countries have. Choosing a so-called “strongman” who proposes easy answers and simple solutions is an abdication of personal responsibility. Assent to authoritarianism requires suspension of thinking and acquiescence to cynicism.
And that threat seems to be everywhere right now. Well said.

Anyway, I honestly don’t understand how the Soviet tentacles/ strings are able to clean and wash themselves of blood so effectively. We hear about American coupe attempts in Venezuela consistently, we never hear about the Soviet/ Cuban communist coupes that happened first and how they dismantled all democratic institutional safeguards.
We have to get this right this time! Viva La Venezuela!
Because Russian propaganda keeps reminding everyone other country bad deeds and failures, especially when someone points out that what Russia is doing is wrong.
When people point out out bad stuff US has done, it get movies made. :D
More importantly, we can say without fear of contradiction that there is no one in power in the west who sponsors coups now, but Russia is active around the world, destabilising democracy and/or ensuring it cannot get a grip in places like Syria, Iran, Cuba and of course, Venezuela, to name just a few. Next to China, Russia is the biggest threat to world wide freedom. Given their recent activities, Russia is the number one threat to the world.
@@ashroskell I mostly agree but I wouldn’t underestimate the CCP’s ability to equal the kremlins evil. The CCP are currently engaged in a genocide among other equally disturbing practices.
It is 2023 and I’d like to think we wouldn’t allow a fascist dictatorship to commit these atrocities but meanwhile we have Wall Street continuing to funnel investor money into China as the CCP continues to harvest the organs of minorities in Xinjiang. While the CCP also openly engages in very threatening rhetoric about the total destruction of the west and international rule of law. As well the CCP are working together with the Kremlin to help Putin’s regime undercut sanctions.
The point being; we should not be tolerating or enabling either regime. It all ends the same with a global population that has been subjugated and is now beholden to the whims of another regime’s authoritarian dictatorship!
@@pabis6817 : I don’t underestimate China. They’re simply not as active on the world stage as Russia right now. Indeed, it’s an open secret that, had Ukraine fallen as quickly as Putin and Xi hoped, we’d be dealing with the invasions and occupations of both Ukraine and Taiwan together, each drawing attention and resources from the other. Putin’s failure, and NATO’s unexpected unity and resolve have changed Xi’s calculations, where he’s now thinking more about how to leverage an ever weaker Russia for the fossil fuels and border territories it controls. Russia becoming a vassal state of China is a real possibility, despite such a thing being a nightmare in Putin’s mind. Whereas Taiwan looks like too dicey a proposition for now. Much depends upon the outcome of the Ukraine war. But, for now, that potential for Russia’s defeat is a key factor in keeping China, “contained.” That’s why I describe Russia as the most dangerous, right now. I make no comment on any given state’s capacity for evil in that regard, as China is just North Korea with money, and the complexities of such a discussion are potentially endless.

When you live in America's backyard you have to play their game. Any leader who doesn't do this and makes a nuisance of themselves will get squished, which is very bad for the citizens of the nuisance country.
A good leader plays the game. You can do business with the US and still be a social-democratic society with decent healthcare and housing for all. I live in Ireland which has very strong social welfare and does huge business with America.

Never underestimate the reach of Russia's corrupt tentacles in Latin America. I hope this is revealed more and more. I hear Russian propaganda from taxi drivers here in Peru regularly, even if they don't always agree with it. I don't know exactly where they get it from but the influence on society is obviously very active.

I understood long ago that russian propaganda is poisoning Europe and North America, but I knew nothing about Latin America.
It is the one investment in Russia’s, “A-Symmetric Warfare,” that has born real fruit and been worth every penny to Putin. Russia has spent something close to one trillion dollars in internet propaganda at every level, from websites, to trolling mainstream news, to bribing and blackmailing politicians and business tycoons, etc, etc, etc, all to get the message out there and, above all else, create DIVISION. Putin knows that his messaging always gets more traction against a background of confusion and division. ✌️🇺🇦

Paul, as I’ve explained, technological trends will undo both bloated government, but especially totalitarian regimes. Decentralized Self Healing Converged Network Tech extends “internet” into what it was intended to be.
Within 2-3 years the unraveling will be in full swing as “tech oligarchies” decompose and new models of cooperative develop. “Federated” business opportunities as big tech deconstructs.
Technologies in financial exchange of value. Trustless business and personal transactions will emerge enabling the little guy to trade like Amazon globally. The code provides the trust.
So many government functions can be replaced as this all evolves. This is in a sense the American dream. For totalitarians it’s their demise.

As a Cuban-American, it's quite illuminating to listen to Armando mention how Chavez touted this "sea of happiness" of Cuba in 1998, when Cuba was a complete economic mess. They were just barely coming out of the Special Period where they suffered just as much as Russia was coming out of the Soviet Union collapse...not a surprise since Castro existed basically as a parasite of Russia. Great interview Paul!

We have lots of Venezuelans here in Alberta, Canada. I knew personally a wonderful family whose daughter befriended with my daughter. So sad that lots of Venezuelans had to flee their country and watch from outside how their beautiful and enormously wealthy country is falling apart under brutal dictatorship, how people are forced to live in poverty and cope with indignity.
It’s very sad. All you can do in such a situation is refuse to accept it as a done deal. They must work to raise awareness and be the, “gadfly,” that worries at the edges. It’s either that or give up all hope, and I cannot imagine what that does to the soul?

Venezuela has the potential to become a superpower, look at all the ressources it has. But corruption, foreign intervention, and many other issues erroded all that potential... totalitarian states are a hell of a thing.
But they never get to rest on their oars and they know it. That’s why dictatorships are so paranoid and unhappy places to live, because their governments never know peace. Small consolation, but I think it’s important to watch for language traps. We must never speak of these dictatorships as though they have reached the end of their story. Just by minding our grammar, reminding dictators that they are dictators . . . for now, just by speaking about them as a passing phase that will, eventually, be settled; I think it makes a difference. Certainly in terms of how people think about them. Not sure if I’m getting my point across very well? But, I agree. It’s such a tragedy . . . for now. ✌️
