"Have a life" One of the best pieces of advice in Barry Greenstein's excellent book "Ace on the River," which is less about how to play poker and more about how to be a poker player is this: once you've made your hobby your job, get a new hobby
Just wanted to say thank you for making videos and specifically this one. Really good advice for someone like me who is just getting into small local tournaments and cash games. Wish I saw this video when it came out because I played my first online session of poker on sunday night and went from $50 to $240 and then all the way to 0 and even -50 because I tried to get back into it at 2am and made constant shitty decisions. Looking forward to all the content you are talking about putting out and hopefully I'll be in the green soon because of it
Hello from India Daniel, without a shade of doubt you are the poker player that all budding poker players look up to here and I'm no different. Your cult is a legend of sorts. Extremely grateful for these tips. Keep 'em coming!
great advice Daniel. I need to start treating it as a job and being ok winning a few hundred. My problem is that I always want to win big and end up losing instead of walking away when I'm up 3-5 hundred
Everything you said about these situations I imagined myself in that pace in the past ...😂 I have literally done all of these stupid things .... thank you so much for this guide .... it will help me a lot
Great video Daniel!! Very intelligent insight. For me I try to take a break every few orbits to stretch my legs & evaluate my session thus far. Cheers🍻🍻
Hey Daniel.. hav been watching u play for quite some years now..i respect yor opnion in poker and i had read this approach of urs a while bck...i liked it, tried to apply but cudnt stick to the time coz smetime i was very hot and smetime very cold..hence i modified ur approach & pre-decided a buyin. This helped me and i cud really limit my losses. Keep making good videos, it surely helps us grinders in one way or the other.. Peace ✌️
Great advice as the dado a three year old and working full time I just find it hard to get the time in general I do a 5am online session with the time limit being when he wakes up. Only on micro limit as I have just returned to poker after a hiatus (getting married, moving to Australia etc.) but it works for me and I have finally started to profit from it
From #Montreal Ive played poker since I was young but recently (couple weeks ago) trough a friend strated playing cash games and im doing good so far, but compared to my friends they are on another level I was told by them to play tournaments before going to playground and playing cash games And they also told me that bankroll was crusial! Whats your take on that? Should I focus on tournament play? Or just going to play cash games if its working? Thanks Daniel I like your energy that you bring in the vids too! Very inspiring to see you playing sports and going to the gym health is wealth!
Thanks man I totally need this. I have played for 8 hours straight and have a good profit but I decided to keep playing and the last hour I lost 25% of my winnings. I felt devastated. I need to clear my mindset and I'll follow your tip to have my own schedule. Thanks Daniel!
wow daniel! you are so inspiring to me. just this morning i googled when you should stop poker, and now i see this video . last night was a pretty big loss for me at a cash game. your advices are great! multumesc :)
Great video. I'm definitely one of those people that's a winner from hours 1-8 and then a donator around hours 12-16 in a session. Game always seems good, but it's not really if you aren't on your A game.
Soooo true! Can't tell you how many times I Superglued my sorry butt to a table and only quit when I totally felt like crap. What a different story it would have been if I had "allowed" myself to walk away fresh, win or lose! And yes, I definitely was the fish.
I love that one of poker's greats is sharing insight on CZcams. I truly hope you stay consistent but I also hope you add an intro lol. I like the thumbnails and the outro but a good intro is also important. 👍🏻 keep it up Kid P!
I love trooper's vlog but no, something more professional. I'm sure Daniel has an idea of what I'm talking about; if not, I'm sure he'll do his due diligence. He doesn't seem like a half ass kinda guy. You can tell simply by looking at the improvements to his thumbnail and outro.
I find that about 4 hours is my sweet spot when ever i try to play longer i lose am a steady winner if i stick to short session ty for sharing your knowledge
keep playing if you are playing your A game and you are up but starting to dwindle. Doubled up to $2k started to leak down to $1650 felt loss edge and better players and cashed out, leaving up is hard as ppl love to play until broke/stuck. Another session, loss to a royal flush down to $100 said to self play A game, 8 hrs later up to $4k cashed out.
Great vlog with good advice. my only question is while I understand the need for balance in life isn't it tough to play from noon-8 pm? Aren't games at that time limited in action, full of regs and not that profitable? This isnt the early 2000's anymore and I find more people aren't as "fishy"anymore. Just my 2 cents
Hey Daniel. Let's say I'm playing 1-3 NL and within the first hour I am up $300. I feel like I am dominating the table and really have made most all of the profit without even going to showdown but maybe a couple of times. My thinking is that I call it a day and leave up $300. Could I be shorting myself of more profit since I smell intimidation or feel like I am playing with weak players? What general rule of thumb when it comes to % gain do you decide to walk away with (at a MUCH LARGER scale obviously)?
My goal with in 4hr session 1/2 NL is $300 and I try to go to the tables 3 days a week . Once I hit this I get up and leave . I always play my best poker early and win before I loose. the longer I stay the more I would loose.
This great advice when I played for a living and all those extra hrs it just turned into a horrible grind I got sick ove the game it's not even fun now 15 yrs later
Great points, the old saying isn't just for when you sit down. It also gets reapplied to any turnovers (new player coming in). Evaluate, Re-evaluate the situation. There's no easy way to explain how the shark got eaten.
Hello, thank you so much for this video. I am still learning to play poker. One thing that I cannot find in all poker tutorial is that: Is poker allow the players to stop playing anytime (even though the player still have coins)? I am still searching for that answer. Or is there a rule that a player has to play for a certain games first? Can I just leave the game after I win a game?
Negreanu is my favorite player of all time. He calls the most hands and has a great personality. I always had big stakes dreams, but keep getting shut down on the grinding climb. Winning big, to lose it back, even after paying a bunch of bills etc. Too much celebrating for me after winning (ego) to negate the losing. Poker is awesome. Gambling sucks. What a conundrum 😔😁🖖✌
Wish I saw this 3 sessions before. Just came back to playing. My pride kills me. Gotta remember sometimes leaving even is winning. Will stick to this system next time I play.
I won't stay for 6-8 hours if I double/triple up in 2 hrs. I play for money, that's it. I will set a limit though, but if I can make my daily amt I need faster, I chalk up the win and leave!
Paul Thrillington what's so dumb, buddy, is when I'm up big after two hours, and I stick around my full 8 hours and end up leaving either with little or no profit when I could have left after 2 hours with a big profit! I'm glad you resort calling what I do "dumb" but it has worked for me and I have not had to work in a long time! I'm going to take Daniels advice and try to apply it
That's extremely result-oriented. Let's assume you can play your A-game for 6 hours (if you can't, then obviously you should quit), but instead you leave after just 2 hours because you set a limit on your winnings. Doesn't it sound ridiculous to you already? Setting a limit *on your winnings*? Why wouldn't you want to win more? And sure, sometimes you will lose what you won instead. But as long as it was just a result of bad luck and not bad play, then more often than not you will not lose your winnings, but increase it! Also, remember that some days you won't be able to win as much as you planned. What then? Will you play for 20 hours straight just to reach your limit? That would be the worst scenario, because most likely you wouldn't be playing too well.
Trias00 thank you for the reply! I understand your thought process and respect your respectful opinion. I have reevaluated my thought process and will be changing my approach and giving it a try!
If i want to play for a for several hours (usually around 2-5 hrs) and end up winning a bunch money early on in the session within the first hour for example, then I will tend to leave right away. But i don't get the complete satisfaction of playing the full amount of hours. When i say a bunch of money I'm talking about 100+ dollars, not thousands. Im a college student with a part time job that does not pay even close to what the jobs of the people i play against. Playing 1/2 NL in Kansas City. It seems like common sense to leave (the casino) while your up. But in my perspective if I've gotten my satisfaction from the game (money earned) early on but don't meet the hours that i planned i on playing then i stay to meet the hours that i want to play initially, then i end up usually losing the money i earned or either winning more. I do agree with the mental discipline that you mentioned. I do the same if i win a hundred dollars for my goal then i want to leave, but sometimes i want to stay and win more money. The money i win goes to toward concerts, partying or dinners. Great vlog!
Where do you play?? I love poker!!! Been playing it for a long time, don't know if I'm any good, but I wanted to go to a casino! Never been, would like to experience, what's your opinion on where to go? I live in PHX, AZ should I try some here or should I go to vegas? Thoughts?
I know there are some indian casinos outside of PHX that have decent action. The first several times are best played in a low pressure environment with small stakes. Don't hesitate to ask questions. Cheers.
One thing I have done is if I'm going to play a tournament, I will go x amount of hours before hand and play cash, that way I limit my cash game time to 2, 3 or maybe 4 hours and have to get up to play the tournament.
Great work Daniel , you need to work on the sound , The volume is to low ?????? Turn it up , im old and cant hear good LOL Keep up the good work ... Thanks
Daniel. Why is it everytime I sit at my local 1/3 no limit casino table. Why they allow Straddling. I understand it's more of gamblers thing. But I feel the classic feel of hold em is gone. The dealer allowed the Button to straddle and the UTG would straddle also. I didn't enjoy it. It seems like everything gets out of position. So I got up and just cashed out.
hes not joking I met some older italian men at casino rama here in canada that used to lend him money at some bridge club underground 1020 game now hes world famous
I sometimes quit early if I run my stack up a certain amount at NL and the table is relatively deep for fear of losing a massive pot, I do this because I find I play differently when I am deep than say with a 10 x to 20 x bb stack. Is this bad? ive had success but don't know if I am capitalizing enough on a good table.
eh daniel. love the videos of late. if u could play some online 6 or o man turbos or mtts i would love to see that. maybe even if you just posted the big hands from your online tourney so the vid wouldnt be too long
dude i really have a question do you consider yourself a lil bit romanian? i mean you were born in Canada...but your parents are both romanians. i wonder hows that like...hope you get to see my question! and btw GL in everything you do!
Great video. I'm getting ready to start playing semi-pro and have been pondering this very question. In the beginning I'm probably going to play more of a stop loss system until I build my bankroll even higher than it is. I don't know though. Thoughts?
NOW you tell me! Seriously, do you have an opinion on how many multiples of your buy-in would mandate you getting up and pocketing the profits? Seems like many guys grind a small stack into a pile, only to lose it at the end of a session with two or three monster pots which don't go their way.
Salut Daniel. Vreau sa-ți propun să faci măcar un video cu sfaturi în romană. Chiar aș aprecia asta.... Hi Daniel. I suggest you do a video with tips even in Romanian. I would really appreciate it ....
Can someone help? I'm considering playing poker at a casino nearby and I'm curious as to how I can cash out my poker earnings. Are there rules preventing me from taking in a big pot and taking my chips to the teller? (I've never been to a casino, but I've been playing poker for years.) Thanks in advance for any info.
Daniel, isn't staying past the time you've allotted to play because you're winning and the game is good, counterintuitive? Isn't that partly the point of setting a limit, so that when you are winning at the end of the session, you walk away with those chips?
Counter intuitive? No, complete opposite, if you've got the table figured out and you have a certain control/table image than it's completely fine to stay extra and capitalize on that.
TV Rewinds newsflash cheeseburgers are addictive.. blowing your load is addictive...its called self control... if you flop the nuts and get rivered so be it
I play online and i set the limitation of number of hands i want to play beforehand. like after 100 hands if the game's no good and im losing im just gonna count my losses and go. This really DOES minimize losses.
"Have a life"
One of the best pieces of advice in Barry Greenstein's excellent book "Ace on the River," which is less about how to play poker and more about how to be a poker player is this: once you've made your hobby your job, get a new hobby
You quit after you start eating a Sandwich all lossey goosey
DyingToLiveForJesus hahahahh
Excellent advice. Leaving the casino as the sun comes up, blinking into the bright light and uncomfortably stuck is an unpleasant feeling.
I only play mtt`s so my strategy is to leave when I`m the only one left at the final table.
I think poker is the only job where a five minute cigarette break can be beneficial. I don't smoke though...
fap break
Also the only job where overtime can cut your pay.
Your going places in life dude 🙌
Daniel Negreanu, been my favorite for a long time. Just found these vids recently. Keep up the great work. Kid Poker for life
Having a game plan is always a good thing. Never play tired.... Your the man Dan! Keep up the good work...
You need to understand at and information table you convey poker. You can't be all loosey goosey eating a phone sitting on your sandwich

Daniel, have you considered calling this series "Negreanuer Hands"? As a kind of play on words since Negreanu sounds like the word poker?
Jesterian hahahahahahaha, Polk is the CZcams overlord
Are you talking about Dan Polk?
Wtf
lmfao
Thanks so much, Daniel, for advise. Simple, yet, so wise. Eliminates all the crazy thinking & indecisiveness, which, in turn, lowers stress level.
I'm guilty of this
Yeah, plus after a few hours of winning i start drinking more so i really need to be disciplined when i play.
@@Slim2Flo i have a question if is greety to quit after 1:30 of playing and winning? Like is greety to stand out and leave
Everything you said about these situations I imagined myself in that pace in the past ...😂 I have literally done all of these stupid things .... thank you so much for this guide .... it will help me a lot
Thanks Daniel for your precious advices!!!
There is something about experience that cant be beat. You have been on this ride before. I appreciate your advice.

My idol in poker !!!
Love the vlog!! Keep it up:)
Great vlog , subject nobody talks about 👍🏻
Thats a great viedeo i was winning 20 days streight 40 bi and lose it in 2-3 day tilt no sleep session. Balance is also very important.

When should you get a microphone to use when you're vlogging so your audio doesn't sound bad?
Great vid as always Daniel! Any chance you can interview Ivey, Juanda or the beautiful Liv Boeree.
Does anyone even like Liv?
thanks for your feedback, Daniel.
if you ain't fresh you ain't sharp
Wish I saw this 3 sessions before. Just came back to playing. My pride kills me. Gotta remember sometimes leaving even is winning. Will stick to this system next time I play.
You're so good and natural
Hey Daniel, poser for you. If you were dealt AA first hand of WSOP main event would you raise all in or call an all in?
Great advice. Thanks kid.
I won't stay for 6-8 hours if I double/triple up in 2 hrs. I play for money, that's it. I will set a limit though, but if I can make my daily amt I need faster, I chalk up the win and leave!
Ok I will definitely change my approach, thank u
That's so dumb oh my god
Paul Thrillington what's so dumb, buddy, is when I'm up big after two hours, and I stick around my full 8 hours and end up leaving either with little or no profit when I could have left after 2 hours with a big profit! I'm glad you resort calling what I do "dumb" but it has worked for me and I have not had to work in a long time! I'm going to take Daniels advice and try to apply it

When you're gonna upload the next vlog???
i can only agree what you saying. Nice vlog btw 😎👊
Great vlog!
JonBenait06 I'm a millennial, I expected the autocorrect to fix my grammar error. :(
Where do you play?? I love poker!!! Been playing it for a long time, don't know if I'm any good, but I wanted to go to a casino! Never been, would like to experience, what's your opinion on where to go? I live in PHX, AZ should I try some here or should I go to vegas? Thoughts?
i would try some local casino's bro.. dont go to vegas to play live casino poker for the first time haha
I know there are some indian casinos outside of PHX that have decent action. The first several times are best played in a low pressure environment with small stakes. Don't hesitate to ask questions. Cheers.
This is awesome info. I personally made $110 in less than 8 min. With two hands in a $4/8 limit game. Personal best
Turn it up , im old and cant hear good LOL
Keep up the good work ... Thanks
Much like a stop loss rule :) good idea
Hey Daniel, just curious what was your starting bankroll when you started playing 12-8pm? And for how long of a period did you do that for?
MegaNolan15 great question, hope to hear from you Daniel!
Daniel Negreanu Oh Daniel, I remember hearing about your early 3k trips to Vegas lol. Love Kid Poker on netflix :)
hes not joking I met some older italian men at casino rama here in canada that used to lend him money at some bridge club underground 1020 game now hes world famous
10 20 limit*
mike james i used to like rama... problem is its the same damn people all the time... better to play in niagara
Haha, Daniel, nice advice as usual :))
How about when to walk away on an upswing. How many multiples of your buy in would it be time to walk away?.
Yeah it's important to have a balance ⚖️
People with advantage s tend to go overboard.
hello negreanu, you are the king! cheers
Tilt is the killer. I need to take a break after a bad beat. Continuing in a negative mood is a great way to go broke.
Yes it's true. thank you Daniel
eh daniel. love the videos of late. if u could play some online 6 or o man turbos or mtts i would love to see that. maybe even if you just posted the big hands from your online tourney so the vid wouldnt be too long
dude i really have a question do you consider yourself a lil bit romanian? i mean you were born in Canada...but your parents are both romanians. i wonder hows that like...hope you get to see my question! and btw GL in everything you do!
Thanks it Works! Winning means stay Looser means go Stop!
That was great adwice!
Great video. I'm getting ready to start playing semi-pro and have been pondering this very question. In the beginning I'm probably going to play more of a stop loss system until I build my bankroll even higher than it is. I don't know though. Thoughts?
Lots of exceptions to ur general rule, but obviously successful considering the source! Cheers!
Time to get that theme song upgraded, Daniel. It's going to be a leak in your branding, the longer you hold on to it.
Good advice
well said sir
Great Video Daniel, thanks! :)
NOW you tell me! Seriously, do you have an opinion on how many multiples of your buy-in would mandate you getting up and pocketing the profits? Seems like many guys grind a small stack into a pile, only to lose it at the end of a session with two or three monster pots which don't go their way.
For me you are the best poker player ;)
[C]asanovaa Not only for you :))

No, because your goal is to win as much money as possible, not as many sessions as possible.
TV Rewinds newsflash cheeseburgers are addictive.. blowing your load is addictive...its called self control... if you flop the nuts and get rivered so be it
i love you daniel you're awesome
Dan are you left handed? I feel that I have a certain edge over other in live with my intuition/reads. thoughts?
woot i am left hand too XD same as one of my favourite poker players..
Worst feeling is being up huge than it slowly goes to nothing. Everyone calls your bluffs, miss draws, people calling with 2nd 3rd pair.
I play online and i set the limitation of number of hands i want to play beforehand. like after 100 hands if the game's no good and im losing im just gonna count my losses and go. This really DOES minimize losses.
What is the minimum you have to sit? What if you double up in an hour or less can you just call it?
I hope i sit at a table with you someday man. It'd be an honor to get peeled by you Sir Daniel. An an even greater one to peel you haha!
