I love the Teardrop Explodes. Saw them at Bristol Colston Hall on the culture bunker tour in 81. I missed this whistle test show due to falling asleep on the settee and waking up only to find I had missed the programme. Worth the 40 year wait.
the great thing, and i speak as a huge Teardop fan from way back when, this was the last time they not only had a great line up, but also were back to basics. Cope Balfe Dwyer, the core members back on front line. Also all the crap had been stripped back. Check out the simplicity of Balfe's key board set up. Great set list.. aready paving the way for Cope's solo career. Most underrated band ever.
The last couple minutes are just great when Julian is in complete control of his face.😆 They start and finish on my 2 favorite songs. A close 3rd is Great Dominions.
Joeyx666, You are an absolute legend. I had this on VHS many years ago, my girlfriend taped over it, I never forgave her and we actually ended up finishing over it! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
What a fantastic band.Mr.Julian Cope underrated songwriter. His solo albums are really worth checking out. Thanks for uploading this great piece of footage.
One of the best gigs I saw was with this lineup, 10 times better than this one, it changed my life. Three hours earlier on a Lisbon street one spaced-out member of the band tried to steal my jacket for kicks but I pushed him away. Real musicians, great times!
Man, I can only imagine all of the other amazing full shows in the OGWT archives. They used to play them on VH1-Classic some 15 years ago, and I was able to catch some great ones (Tom Petty, Smiths, Hall & Oates). We need more of this available.
Thursday 1st Apr 1982 : 23:30 on BBC2 A special concert recorded at the Riverside Studios, Hammersmith - presented by Anne Nightingale ... and having watched it all the way through, I'm disappointed. They weren't anywhere near as good as they were on their previous OGWT appearance in 1980 (which you can find on CZcams).
Troy Tate, what happened to him? (after making a mess of The Smiths first album) ! Not really big on this lineup though, and the bassist has been listening to too much Level 42. The songs though are magnificent.
Well, I don’t know about Tate, but the bass player Ron Francois apparently lives in Australia. He was (and probably still is) a very able bass player and the slap thing was just very much in vogue at the time. His playing style is really a far cry from that of Mark King of Level 42. Francois had even released two records with the Sinceros slapping the bass, even before Level 42 released any of their stuff. At the time of this Teardrop show Level 42 was in it’s infancy having released only one complete album. As to Tate as guitarist he must at least have had the longest career any guitarist had in the Teardrops, recording the whole of Wilder.
If, back in the day, The Police, The Smiths, The Cure, and XTC got it on somehow, and spawned a bastard idiot savant, wunderkind ADHD son, then JC was that son.
It’s difficult to regard a person as great whose opinion of himself went so far beyond his real abilities, but there’s something unique about Julian Cope in his Teardrop Explodes days. I haven’t decided whether he’s daft for taking a pass all these years on the millions he’d have earned doing reunion tours with the Teardrops, or if he simply has _so_ much artistic integrity that he must refuse such offers. Some of his persistent megalomania probably factors into it.
Sorry to piss on your chips but I think it was a mistake to get session musicians in to replace Mick Finkler and Paul Simpson. The Cope ego was a beautiful but terrible thing
They weren't a good live band compared to their peers, listless and dull. No power in their sound, the band plays like session musicians who lack enthusiasm. But Kilimanjaro is a fantastic album that still sounds great today.

Oh my! Happy Days, I was there too :D
Great band. Still love the drude

no one can touch this band. Spontaneous. Un predictable. Charsimatic. Follow them forever.
Fab! I'm a big Teardrops fan and didn't even know this existed; can't remember it at all from back in the day.

Same story with me, but it was an old video with Leeds United highlights on it lol
Best reason for a break-up, EVER!
Seems fair
What a fantastic band.Mr.Julian Cope underrated songwriter. His solo albums are really worth checking out. Thanks for uploading this great piece of footage.
The first two albums are works of pure magic. The songwriting is heavenly.
@@Chrisamusic1 Absolutely chris.Brilliant songwriter.
First 4 solo albums are so good.
Cool concert with lots of songs from Wilder!
So, we get the FULL O.G.W.T. show at last !!!! Thanks Joey !!!!
I loved the Teardrop explodes... Happy memories... thanks for posting...
This is Kevin speaking. Look at my plasticene smile. Complete control of this face.
Great performance of Culture Bunker and my favourite version of log Cabin.
Badly underrated should have been huge
Didn't think i could like 'colours fly away' any more than i already do, but man this dude and his backing, jesus. I was one years old :( Damn it.
Not keen on it here. Though the fact that they did it ska did make me laugh.
Great blokes🇬🇧
Thanks for the upload!
Waiting for the Crucial Three, wondering what went wrong. Thanks for posting this video!
Best version of Teardrop, easily.
Wonderful and distracting .. A live version of Log Cabin , amazing...

Did you collect your reward?
@@gargantuk All wrapped up the same.
🧥 You can’t have it, they can’t have it. 💋
George Galloway plays a mean trumpet!😂
Seriously this is excellent!💚
Fantastic version of The Culture Bunker!
The bassist is hilarious!
Why did they never release Screaming Secrets as a single? Would definitely have been another top 10.
Weird band (in the best possible way).
idk man, if magazine and the sound had a bastard lovechild with adhd it would julian cope
NIce seeing Screaming Secrets got an OGWT
Muito bom

anyone no setlist?
@@SteveGad thanx, one song i dident know
Julian has a Jim Morrison vibe on this song.
I can climb mountains to fall down again. I can ford many rivers without feeling ... pain. #juliangenius

No, Brit slang for German V1 rockets.

I like what he did with The Smith's album. It's more real and raw than Porter's. I'm not saying that I don't like Porter's,they are just different.
@@angelariley908 Fair comment Angela. It has its own personality, for sure.
He joined en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurogliders here in Australia
Agree. Though 'Colours Fly Away' in ska-funk style did make me chuckle.
Looks like you're being kicked in the napper within 1:10, or there abouts... You're my hero, Copey.. ;)
I want to hear someone - preferably Cope - re-record “Wilder” without all the Langer Winstanley fluff on it.
Julian Cope has written so many great cool pop songs but this is the biggest bunch of duds ever assembled. Except for Tiny Children.
Nice joke, Carlin.
Is that Sacky Bill on drums?!
Of course!
Julian as gorgeous as ever
If, back in the day, The Police, The Smiths, The Cure, and XTC got it on somehow, and spawned a bastard idiot savant, wunderkind ADHD son, then JC was that son.
he is a bit of a "weirdo"
Sad that he would be compared to those listed, rather than the other way around
@@cbennett196631 I think he's way better than the Cure and Police but on equal footing with XTC and the Smiths.
Annie must be late 30s or early 40s here
Isn’t the Bass player the big guy who ended up joining Big Country? He looks really familiar. Great Bass player. I saw them live up close.
No, it was Tony Butler in Big Country. The guy here is Ronnie Francois.
Kevin Randall : That’s interesting because Tony Butler also played the same Bass. OK, thanks!
Ronnie François. The only thing tighter than his bass playing is his pants.
