The Old Grey Whistle Test (sometimes abbreviated to Whistle Test or OGWT) is a British television music show. The show was devised by BBC producer Rowan Ayers, commissioned by David Attenborough[and aired on BBC2 from 1971 to 1988. It took over the BBC2 late-night slot from Disco 2, which ran between September 1970 and July 1971, while continuing to feature non-chart music. n.
According to presenter Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before. When they got the first pressing of a record they would play it to people they called the old greys - doormen in grey suits. Any song the doormen could remember and whistle, having heard it just once or twice, had passed the old grey whistle test.

I was 12 years old, someone lent me this album and an album by the New Musik called "A to B". Up to my bedroom sanctuary I crept and listened carefully on the "sacred headphones".
It changed my life. Literally. It was like nothing I'd heard before. I closed my eyes and went to this futuristic place.
I am typing this, I'm sure with a giant smile on my face and a tear in my eye for a time now gone. When all these sounds and songs were all new. Blowing away my mind, my eardrums and my youth.
I can't tell how many times i listened to this that night and still to this day.

I just barely discovered Gary Numan now in 2023.. Of all the performances I've ever seen in my life I would have loved to be at this one but in 1979 I wasn't even alive yet! It's crazy to think all this was happening before I was even born but thanks to the magic of video and audio recording I can experience this moment. His new stuff is great too but its the older stuff that got me hooked. This man's music is truly timeless.

You wouldn't have been able to "be at this one" as the Old Grey Whistle Test was a tv programme, no audience. It was the only place on TV in the UK where you could see bands really playing live, rather than the usual lip-synching crap on more mainstream pop programmes. OGWT had many, many legendary bands and it's equally legendary presenter "Whispering" Bob Harris is still active today.

Well, the synths are a bit out of balance, but since probably nobody at the BBC had ever heard music remotely like this, it's not that surprising they had the levels a bit different to how it was on the record!

    • @krg1965
      @krg1965 Před rokem +3

@@feline1973 I'd never thought of that before, synths being a bit of a head-scratcher for the sound engineers on OGWT, but yes. And I guess they had a limited amount of time to line check and put together a mix. Few things leapt out at me: drums (played brilliantly as ever by Ced) completely dry and somewhat muddy eq, bass guitar a little (!) high in the mix, Billy's synth mixed a lot lower so we miss his solo in the coda, Chris' Moog very dry also. But it was a wonderful performance - the one that got me excited about making music, seeing this band and realising I wanted to make this kind of sound.

    Lyrics:
    It's cold outside
And the paint's peeling off of my walls
    There's a man outside
In a long coat, grey hat, smoking a cigarette
    Now the light fades out
And I'm wondering what I'm doing in a room like this
There's a knock on the door
And just for a second I thought I remembered you
    So now I'm alone
Now I can think for myself
    About little deals
    And issues
And things that I just don't understand
Like a white lie that night
Or a slight touch at times
I don't think it meant anything to you
    So I open the door
It's the 'friend' that I'd left in the hallway
    "Please sit down"
A candle lit a shadow on a wall near the bed
You know I hate to ask
    But, are 'friends' electric?
    Mine's broke down
And now I've no one to love
So I find out your reason
For the phone calls and smiles
    And it hurts
    And I'm lonely
And I should never have tried
    And I missed you tonight
    So it's time to leave
You see this means everything to me

will show just what a incredibly creative and prolific artist he is.

Under the radar, the real fans who realize his influence and genius, have given him 2 top 10 albums in recent years.
One of the few artists to create a totally new style of music ,with the combination of the recently invented synthesizer, combined with traditional instruments.
Asperger's syndrome has certainly made his life a challenge, but with the support of his family, and virtually unrivalled creatively over 40 years, hes finally getting the recognition he deserves.
Wheres his MBE for significant services to music???...ed sheeran has one!

This is an absolutely splendid version. Totally raw, and still has that same "thing" regardless. I'm willing to bet the OGWT producers (A.N. included) were thinking "Yeah, this guy's whole act is going to crumble when we strip his sound down to nothing but amps". Heh. That ended well for them.

I recall the shit they got at the time for using synths, it was ok for ELP and Yes and all that prog rock stuff but this band captured an amazing raw sound that propelled them to No1 with this track in 1979

It’s the “simplicity” of Gary’s songs that make them what they are. The melody gets stuck in your head and drives the song with this unrelenting groove. All the while there is the synth bass line like a drone underneath it all. Its like the Velvet Underground meets the Monks meets Kraftwerk with a little Bowie for some panache. Even though the Human League, OMD and Ultravox were doing synth songs before Gary, he stood out because he kept it simple and allowed for space between the notes.
