Along with 'Geno' , by Dexys Midnight Runners , this has got The best horn-led rock/pop single written all over it. Both are very much of their time , but absolutely magical single '45s !!! Excellent. Thanks JP 😍

This track came out at the end of January 1981 and peaked at no.4 in the UK Top 40.
The Top 10 this week was:
    1 - John Lennon - Imagine
    2 - John Lennon - Woman
    3 - Adam & The Ants - Antmusic
4 - Phil Collins - In the air tonight
    5 - The Look - I am the beat
    6 - Specials - Do nothing
    7 - Yarborough & Peoples - Don't stop the music
    8 - Blondie - Rapture
    9 - Ultravox - Vienna
10 - The Beat - Too nice to talk to
Also in this weeks Top 40... and a few from the next couple of weeks...
Adam & The Ants - Young Parisians
Stevie Wonder - I ain't gonna stand for
    Queen - Flash
    Visage - Fade to grey
Dire Straits - Romeo & Juliet
David Bowie - Scary monsters (and super creeps)
    Bad Manners - Lorraine
Madness - The return of the Los Palmas Seven
    Spandau Ballet - The freeze
    Madness - Embarrassment
    Gary Numan - This wreckage
Diana Ross - It's my turn
    Teardrop Explodes - Reward
Passions - I'm in love with a German film star
    The Jam - That's entertainment
XTC - Sgt Rock (Is going to help me)
    Rainbow - I surrender
Talking Heads - Once in a lifetime
Kim Wilde - Kids in America
    Toyah - It's a mystery
The early months of what i consider to be one of the greatest years in popular music. I'd be hard pushed to pick a top 100 favourite tracks from this year let alone a top 10, but one track i would totally have in my top 10 would be OMD's Souvenir, which in my opinion is one of the most gorgeous synth tracks of all time. Hope you enjoy this chart.😊

I am not too familiar with much of their material but I have always loved this single. I would highly recommend taking a view of their 1980 live performance of, "Reward" on, "The Old Grey Whistle Test" where Julian introduces the song in French and the horn section appear to be sporting safari jackets, for reasons which escape me! Super, super record... from the days when even the weirdest, most alternative, most drugged out bands had absolute TUNES like this! As many others will tell you, bandleader Julian Cope had previously been in Arthur Hostile & The Crucial Three with Wah!'s Pete Wylie and Echo & The Bunnymen's Ian McCulloch (and drummer Steve Spence), and his solo career is also worth checking out, especially the early years, though he's always worth a listen...
And as the joke used to go (which Julian Cope used to tell himself!), what's the difference between The Teardrop Explodes and a cow? The cow has horns at the front and an arse at the back... 🤣

    Wikipedia:
Howard Robard Hughes Jr. (December 24, 1905 - April 5, 1976) was an American business magnate, record-setting pilot, engineer, film producer, and philanthropist, known during his lifetime as one of the most influential and richest people in the world. He first became prominent as a film producer, and then as an important figure in the aviation industry. Later in life, he became known for his eccentric behavior and reclusive lifestyle-oddities that were caused in part by his worsening obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), chronic pain from a near-fatal plane crash, and increasing deafness.
He had English, Welsh and some French Huguenot ancestry, and was a descendant of John Gano (1727-1804), the minister who allegedly baptized George Washington.
