  • Effect of Grain Direction in Spindle Turnings, bottle stoppers.
Hi my friends! In this video I am going to examine the visual effect the grain direction produces in spindle turnings, like bottle stoppers and pens. For that, I selected a piece of chestnut oak, from which I obtained three blanks, the first, with the grain direction running parallel to the lathe rotation axis, the second, with the grain direction running at 30° from the lathe rotation axis, and the third, with the grain direction running perpendicular to the lathe rotation axis. The three pieces came out from the same board, which, pretty much, had straight grain. The video shows how difficult or easy is the turning of the different blanks, and the visual impact produced by each grain direction.

    Disclaimer:
You, and only you, are responsible for your safety in the shop and for your health. The procedures shown in this video, (and my answers to the comments), although they are the ones I consider safe, are not necessarily so for every operator (wood turner, carpenter, etc.). Wood is a heterogeneous and unpredictable material, not two pieces are identical, even when they come from the same trunk of the same tree, shop tools and machines can cause damage to the operator, dust and other physical and chemical contaminants may cause disease and disorders when the operator does not take into consideration adequate protection. Always read operation manuals for your tools and machinery. This video can give you a point to start your research on what is the best for you, but, in any way is the only source of information. The level of experience of the operator is also a factor; procedures that may be safe for an operator that has a lot of experience may not be dangerous for an operator with less experience. If you do not feel safe or confident with a procedure you have seen in my channel, do not repeat it. Be safe and enjoy these activities.

Hi Rick! Thank you very much, my friend, I am glad you enjoyed the video! I hope you will enjoy the bottle stopper videos as well! Unfortunately, some of my early videos are in Spanish with subtitles, but the later ones, I have in both versions, English and Spanish! Cheers! Daniel

@@DanielVilarino That's ok, Daniel. I don't exactly speak Spanish, but I've lived on the Mexican border in California or Arizona for the last 50 years and I can get by. ). Wonderful to see you again.

@@RickFarrisHi Rick! Thank you so much for your understanding. When I initiated the channel, I thought that doing videos in one language with subtitles in the other, was the way to go, and I alternated, one video in English and another in Spanish. Later, I discovered that editing and adding subtitles was almost as demanding as doing two versions of the video. It just requires for me to film the intro and last part in both languages and then do the voice overs in two languages, but the editing is the same for both! Cheers! Daniel

Hi Ian! Thank you so much, my dear friend, for watching the video and for the nice comments! One thing to consider is that in the case of the 90° grain direction, it would be better not to design a bottle stopper that is too thin in some part, because it would be prone to break in that thin part. Cheers! Daniel

Great video Daniel. I wish you would have used a spindle roughing gouge. I would have liked to see how it reacted to each grain pattern... Thanks, V

Hi my friend! Thank you for your comments, for watching the video and for the suggestion. I almost never use a roughing gouge, typically I will rough with the skew. But I do have one and in the future I will try to use it to see how it works. I plan to do a few bottle stoppers and if I use the grain in different directions I will certainly use the roughing gouge to cover that point! Cheers! Daniel
