  • Chess Set, Video 1: Introduction and Preparatory Steps
Hi my friends! In this video I am starting a project that will require several videos. The idea is to complete a full set of chess pieces (all 32) and even, maybe some extra, which will require the turning and, in some cases, (particularly the knights) the carving of wood as well as making the chess board. In this initial video we will show some of the preliminary steps, like the planing of the turning squares, trying to detect defects, the cut of the blanks for the different chess pieces, the perforation in the bases of the blanks (so later we can fit in a jam chuck) and the preparation of the jam chucks.

In the video I mention the use of specialized scrapers in many wood shops where they mass produce chess pieces.

    Disclaimer:
You, and only you, are responsible for your safety in the shop and for your health. The procedures shown in this video, (and my answers to the comments), although they are the ones I consider safe, are not necessarily so for every operator (wood turner, carpenter, etc.). Wood is a heterogeneous and unpredictable material, not two pieces are identical, even when they come from the same trunk of the same tree, shop tools and machines can cause damage to the operator, dust and other physical and chemical contaminants may cause disease and disorders when the operator does not take into consideration adequate protection. Always read operation manuals for your tools and machinery. This video can give you a point to start your research on what is the best for you, but, in any way is the only source of information. The level of experience of the operator is also a factor; procedures that may be safe for an operator that has a lot of experience may not be dangerous for an operator with less experience. If you do not feel safe or confident with a procedure you have seen in my channel, do not repeat it. Be safe and enjoy these activities.

Thank you Daniel! Your explanations are excellent and your jam chuck approach makes good sense. I brought wood to carve a chess set home from Costa Rica when I was a student there in 1980. I still want to make that set (and I still have the wood) ...and your video has re-inspired me to try making them on the lathe.

Hi Karl! Thank you very much, my friend, I am glad you enjoyed the video! I am happy it has motivated you to retake the project. Costa Rica has very nice woods, I travel there often for work, and whenever I can I bring in my bag something! Cheers! Daniel
