  • Design Elements for the woodturning of Bottle Stoppers.
Hi my friends! In this video I analyze a couple of design elements for the wood turning of bottle stoppers. The first is how the grain direction may affect the integrity and strength of the piece, with the possibility of creating weak point in the bottle stopper structure, and how to avoid that. The second is an ergonomic aspect, how the stopper shape helps in fulfilling its functional role. Certain spindle turning elements are better suited to push in or pull out the stopper from the bottle's mouth, and in the video I show a few examples of this.

    Disclaimer:
You, and only you, are responsible for your safety in the shop and for your health. The procedures shown in this video, (and my answers to the comments), although they are the ones I consider safe, are not necessarily so for every operator (wood turner, carpenter, etc.). Wood is a heterogeneous and unpredictable material, not two pieces are identical, even when they come from the same trunk of the same tree, shop tools and machines can cause damage to the operator, dust and other physical and chemical contaminants may cause disease and disorders when the operator does not take into consideration adequate protection. Always read operation manuals for your tools and machinery. This video can give you a point to start your research on what is the best for you, but, in any way is the only source of information. The level of experience of the operator is also a factor; procedures that may be safe for an operator that has a lot of experience may not be dangerous for an operator with less experience. If you do not feel safe or confident with a procedure you have seen in my channel, do not repeat it. Be safe and enjoy these activities.

    Hola Daniel:
Bottle stoppers make nice gifts to friends who like to drink wine. One can't go wrong giving these since they are quick and easy to make.

Hi Bill! Thank you my friend, I am glad you liked it! Grain direction may escape our minds from time to time, particularly if we are in a hurry to complete a project, but, it is always a good idea to check it, because those few moments of analysis, can make a huge impact on how the final piece is going to look. Cheers! Daniel

Stoppers are fun to make. I suppose they can be sold, but I prefer to just give them away to friends. We always take a bottle of wine when we are invited to dinner or a party, and I usually tie a stopper onto the neck of the bottle to personalize the gift.
A few comments. First, I always apply a coat of finish to the bottom of the turning before attaching the 'works'. This may not be necessary, but it seals the wood to prevent liquids (wine or water) from penetrating, especially when the grain in parallel to the turning axis so that the bottom is end grain.
Second, wine contains alcohol,so I prefer finishes that are resistant to alcohol - either a lacquer-based friction polish, or more often, a shop-made Tung Oil varnish. I've also made a few stoppers with captive rings that I finish with pure Tung Oil.
Third, your point about wanting the design to provide a convenient way to grip the stopper is valid. But I try to avoid designs where the top is pointed for similar reasons - when you insert the stopper into the bottle, you need to press down and a sharp point would be uncomfortable.

Hi Louie! Thank you kindly, my dear friend for watching and commenting the video! To give a bottle with a stopper is a very nice gesture, I am sure it is well appreciated. I seem to run out of stoppers all the time :) I produce 20 or 30 every so often and keep giving them as gifts to friends and family, I have not sold many, since this is a hobby for me, maybe in a future :) Thank you for your suggestions, I will apply a thin layer of CA glue in the bottom from now on, that will seal the wood and help in keeping the stopper in place. The finish I use is friction polish, has alcohol, shellac and boiled linseed oil. I have stoppers in use from 10 years ago, that are still in very good shape despite the use, so it seems to be pretty durable. I have used ca glue in a few cases, but it takes much longer to complete the finish. I understand the comment regarding the pointed features. It is that sometimes I get carried away with the artistic aspect, hahahaha, but I will consider it in the future. Cheers! Daniel

Hi Rick! Thank you very much, my friend, I am glad you enjoyed the video! Wood turning bottle stoppers is always very fulfilling because it is a relatively small project, that you can finish quickly with a beautiful result. And they make excellent gifts! Cheers! Daniel
