  • By now you know John worked with Redcat to ensure that this rig is powered right and that it comes equipped with a Holmes Hobbies Crawlmaster Sport 550 13T brushed motor. Sending power to the motor is the Hobbywing 1080 Electronic Speed Control which is programmed well from the factory. However if you are looking to get some more control out of your ESC, John has been testing some new settings and is ready to share them with you. In this video he goes over every setting available in the ESC and suggests a few changes to improve your crawling experience. Want to fine tune your crawler? Then you need to watch this video!

I own a few of these prog boxes. You can actually make all of your changes and then hit the confirm button. Settings are retained during the program of each item as you go down the list. 2 cents for ya. Great work!

Thanks for going through this since I just installed one. A couple things. I understand that if you have a heat problem you should lower your frequency. Also you need to check your receiver voltage before you turn your BEC up. My receiver will only run up to 6.5V although I have a high voltage servo. Thanks again.
After watching you solder plugs on I now just automatically add a red JST(?) plug when I change them. With all the lights, winches, servos, etc. I might start adding two!

Your explanation of the settings, pwm and freewheeling especially, are super helpful, thanks. I also like your soldering tips and seeing how u do it....
I have too many rigs and airplanes on Deans to switch over at this point...lol... they haven't caused problems for me, but I have been considering starting the changeover to XT60s and just using them on any new projects until deans fades out of my fleet...?
I took the magnifying glass off my helping hands and am close to removing it entirely from my soldering kit...

polarity is not the only thing we can get wrong sometimes when gluing on tires that are directional I'll wind up putting them all in the same direction so left right doesn't match up correctly

I've heard you should always cover the iron tip with solder especially when putting it away. It supposedly prevents oxidation that causes pitting and tip wear.

I built a 2wd truck with an RC4WD R4 scale transmission, 4:1 gear reduction and a Gool RC 80 turn rebuildable (brushed) motor. I was running it on 3s (brisk walking speed) when I smoked the motor! Should I get a better brand high turn motor or should I get a lower turn motor with that gearing in mind?

  • @sammyboswelldirtybrc7580

Forgot to say the little my scx 24 has the 1080 in it kinda heavy but it’s awesome in it crawls slow and Will ride Willys

What would be the optimal frequency re: startup smoothness and efficiency? Assuming I don't mind the noise.
Also, I sometimes use a higher initial startup power. The lowest setting won't spin some motors up initially so it's just wasted trigger travel. Esp with expo dialed in on the radio.

This looks like a good esc. Can you run 2 together using a Y harness (red wire pulled on one) each using a 6 cell Ni-MH (as you said lipo only)? Also can you calibrate it using a Futaba 4yf stick Transmitter or does it have to be digital?

Hi John been watching u for a while and subbed to u have been crawling for about six months now but been rcing for twenty five years or better was wondering what motor u recommend for a good slow crawl and something that still has enough wheel speed to pick them up off the ground my rig is trx4sport I want to add the two speed but haven’t yet I have a mamba x and one or ur crawl master brushed motors running on 4s but I want some speed so what’s the best of both worlds in your opinion and was also wondering if u mite have a motor in the works for scx24 axial love to have one of your motors in my little guy to

Note you should always follow the parameters in the ESC manual, don't rely on the programming card as those settings are likely to be incorrect. ESPECIALLY when mixing brands of program cards and ESC's.

I found a little trick when soldering plugs on! I always plug an empty plug in the other side so if i do over heat it a little it holds the connectors straight so they dont move in the housing from overheating
