The driver is so used to traveling many miles at a stretch and becomes relaxed behind the wheel and loses his concentration on what's up ahead. I've seen at least two rear end collisions of stopped traffic being rear ended by a semi. The first was in Michigan and two elderly ladies died. The other was east of Columbus Ohio. One man was killed when his pickup was shoved clear under the tandems of a truck in front of him. So horrible.

I believe this was on RT 17 near Binghamton heading toward a curve known locally as kamikaze curve. The speed limit is 55 and they placed a huge curve sign up with flashing lights but excessive speed is still an issue there. There have been many crashes there. They have improved the lane flow there but speeding is still an issue.
They improved nothing, the 81 split is absolute pandemonium, even in a semi I'm crawling through there, watching and praying some last second knucklehead doesn't crash into me.

They have a photo of the gray vehicle after the fact, and if it already looked non-survivable in the video, the photo makes it look even less so. I do suspect someone died and it was misreported. But if they did survive, they must have been labor camp skinny to fit in whatever gap was left between the metal

In the UK trucks and buses are not allowed in lane 3 so whenever I have the kids in the car and we hit traffic I'm straight into lane 3 until I'm comfortable there's a good distance of parked traffic behind us. Too many people, especially kids die on the roads because of rear end collisions from HGVs.
Same here in Belgium , not allowed in the 3th lane . I don't understand why Adaptif Cruise Control isn't madatory on every car , especialy big trucks .

A few years on he was driving an empty bus on the interstate, it was a sunny day and he ran into the back of an 18 wheeler--no brake marks, he was ejected threw the bus windshield and died. R.I.P. friend.
If the trucker can't stop or not pay attention on the road, why can't trucker get off the road, I don't care if truck driver is hurt or not but better than making biggest crash mess!

I'll educate you, there is an uphill grade that meanders to the right and if traffic is stopped near the interstate split, you can't see it until you crest the hill. I live 20 minutes from this location.
Adults that were Boy Scouts often are prepared in real life. I have a 2 pound ABC 🧯 extinguisher in both of my vehicles. Large enough to suppress most small fires. I also have a 5 pound extinguisher in my work truck. As well as several 10 & 20 pound extinguishers at home. If you have ever had a fire at home like I have? They are an excellent tool from keeping a small fire from becoming a larger fire in the time it takes fire fighters to arrive at your house. Both times the extinguisher worked like a charm. There was little for the fire fighters to do when they arrived.
@@TheRoadhammer379 I have a CDL class 1 as well. I don’t drive a semi but we drive large straight trucks with a utility body & sometimes pull heavy trailers. Each of our trucks has a 5 pound ABC extinguisher, first aid kit & a fire blanket. As well as a spill kit & road triangles even though we have traffic cones as well.
Finally someone who knows how to use a fire extinguisher!
