  • While considered one of the easiest fourthousanders in the Alps, this magnificent mountain still offers stunning vistas and an unforgettable experience. Thanks to Metro Alpin, the whole climb on the normal route can be completed in under two hours. Three with the return trip. In Saas-Fee you'll find offers of mountain guides everywhere that promise to take you there for ~600CHF. It's even officially promoted as "My first four-thousander" (Mein erster Viertausender). As an ambitious mounitaneer you may just be considering whether you really need a mountain guide for a climb this easy. If you ever been on glacier with crampons, you are reasonably fit and weather is good enough I promise you, you'll be able to handle it alone. Hell, if you are sure-footed, you don't even need ice-axe. (But don't tell the mountain safety police ;-) ) The route is frequently climbed and bypasses most of the crevasses nicely. Sure, anything can happen, but 4000 metres in Alps really doesn't get easier than this (and Breithorn).

    How do you follow the normal route? just by following the footsteps and packed snow?

      Yeah pretty much. It's quite frequented.

      @cedr  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah… once you exit the cablecar the entire normal route is on the glacier

      @@Yang_banana I did it as my first 4000er and first glacier walk without a guide a month ago. Just learn the glacier technique on the internet, how to tie a rope with your partner, how to use crampoons and ice axe and go early with the crowd. There are always plenty of people to help on a sunny days. All the equipment was borrowed at Saas Grund. Make sure to hike some hills around first to acclimatize yourself.
