  • Weissmies is heavily promoted across Saas-Fee as "My second 4000 metre peak" (Mein zweiter Viertausender) to adventurers who haven't had enough on the Allalinhorn. Local mountain guides will get you up there for the "modest" CHF820. Is it worth it? Well... Weissmies is definitely worth the climb. Weissmies is a beautiful mountain and Triftgletscher is an impressive glacier. But do you need a mountain guide for that? Not really. The Weissmies is a popular mountain and the Hochsaas cable car makes the normal route very well traversed. The less than 1000 metres of vertical gain required is a bit tougher nut to crack and almost double what's needed for Allalin, but you can still make it in one day and catch the afternoon lift down. At first glance, the Trift Glacier looks impenetrable, but the normal route to the summit is surprisingly easy. Sure it's no Allalin or Breithorn, but that's why you'll appreciate it more. Good luck out there.

Nothing wrong with soloing if you bear the consequences and know the risks

How irresponsible is this post?! I was yesterday on the normal route and the route goes over many and large crevasses. The snow cover is anything but thick. Doing the climb alone and not roped up is just plain dangerous. If you are lucky, someone will see you when you fall (if you survive the fall).
I can only appeal to everyone to do the route only if you have the equipment and especially the experience. Otherwise, invest the money in a guide.

Congrats on your climb! I do agree about the equipment and the experience for sure, that goes without saying. Same goes for good weather and physical condition. Going alone is irresponsible, can't argue with that... but some people do like mountaineering alone... and some may wonder if Weissmies is solo-able... and yeah, compared to most other 4000ers in Alps it's not that bad.
