That phrase where you say painting progression isn't like a curve going up but instead up and down. I agree. Except when you progress your bedt gets better and your worst also gets better! Like being able to paint your worst now is way better than your worst a year ago
Dude, the "vignette" effect is just... *chef's kiss*
*high-pitched voice* "I, Cato Sicarius, approve! What challenge is left for a master swordsman than having four swords on each mailed fist?"
This was pretty based bro :)
Also, regarding 13:42 mixing the Army Painter snow material with clear drying white wood glue will give a nice "slurry" effect once it dries up, perfect for shallow snow that's been smushed and pushed aside from the surface by feet, tracks etc.
For a more opaque effect (for settled snow or deep layers of snow). either mix some white paint into the wooden glue or mix the Army Painter Snow up with Vallejo "Foam/Snow Water Effects".
Super based video!
"after all of this time,
the bases are on;
you know what else is based?
Our Patreon" 👍😁
Says its a display model. Buries it a drawer after he is done... Love it.
i found that giving the snow a very thin blue wash ends up looking really good since it leaves that bright white from the effect but puts that artsy blue glow into the recesses of which there are tons
I'm just after building my first squad of space marines, a really wonderful experience. I would just like to say thank you for all the useful tips and tricks you have shared in your videos.
Since January started I feel like I've watched at least 3 videos a day from you, and just realized I wasn't subscribed right now. So fixed that, thank you for all the content thats helping me explore getting into minis hobby. I'm taking a lot from your videos for my goals with learning the hobby. I right now have minis from Crisis Protocol and Age of Sigmar, but you've given so many useful tips and tricks. Keep up the great work, and with learning from you and others I hope to be able to enter a minis painting competition later this year. Keep up the great work, and thank you for all the content!
You can use a bit of hairspray on a brush and added to Santa's gun barrel, then add a small bit of cotton to make a cool gunsmoke.
You can use a damp paper towel to remove the smoke when moving it or not displaying it.
(Don't use PVA because it'll build up or squish the cotton when moving the mini in a case).
mixing army pointer snow with vallejo water effect doe give a preaty nice effect as well
11:46 A lil tip for the sharp tips of these icicles would be to soften the ends over the candle again before gluing to the base 😉👍
I think giving those icicles a little file or sand at the bottom so they have more of a point would have really sealed the deal, still some awesome bases! Great video
The vignetting on Cato's base looks really good. I never thought about doing something like that on a minature
The vignette is such a great idea! Thank you
Wow, the vignette effect really solved the "clash" in paint styles - way better than I anticipated. Great bases and video
Lol good old Jay B. Shillin’ - great video! The OSL on the claws is truly the most effective osl effect I’ve ever seen
How you use random things for basing always amazes me.
I always love the supply gathering montages, but for a split second I thought you were just gonna grab the jar of crushed glass and stop. lol
One day there's gunna be a shot in that montage of Jay just chuckin Nick at the table
Bro they’re so good every time
The montage makes me smile every time. Priceless!
I'm probably late so this comment won't get seen, but I usually use Blue Stuff or Oymaru to make one sided molds of stuff I like to use for basing, like halves of barrels, shields, partially buried bones and other random bits which I then cast in UV resin. It's cost effective and allows me to copy parts from things like toys and other collectibles that I might not want to destroy.
I love the cryola model magic stuff. I like letting it dry in big chucks and then you can get really interesting rock like surfaces by tearing at it.
that's a really good idea!
not only are those painted extremely well, i really enjoyed the osl from the claws and the slight vignette when you airbrushed the base. that's a brilliant idea!
Mixing milliput and geeen stuff gets the best properties from each other . Videos all over CZcams about it .
Your channel has improved exponentially keep it up
6:43 i love when you find a simple new technique that you've never heard of or considered. it's like i'm stumbling on ancient lost knowledge lol.
Those icicles are awesome !!!
And that christmas poem is great !!!
Love this video. I always like seeing others approaches to basing. Gives me a lot of ideas and helps with some issues I have run into. You rock
Spent casings come out of a firearm REALLY hot, burn your fingers hot. I wonder if you could putyour casings into the snow whilst it's still wet and push them in to make it look like they landed on top and are melting their way down.
that's a cool idea
Holy shit that snow. I have some of that from their basing kit and was also disappointed with it.
All the models look great! You should take the time every so often and do a one off character. Before you know it you will have a collection of characters painted to an excellent standard and who knows when you might need to pull one out for a mission or two.
ON the Isle of Svalbard i have heard it is required to own a gun due to Polar bear attack chances so that could be why Santa has a gun
You guys are amazing.
Christmas content is back😂
"You thought it was a basing video but it was I, Cato Sicarius!"
I use GSW snow flock in the same manner, I mix it with acrylic paste and a little PVA. It sets similar to Valhalla blizzard but vastly cheaper. Great tip for the icicles, definitely to give that a try.
Perfect foundation ideas 🇧🇷
Such sick models and great work on the basing jay ! Your videos continue to inspire me !
those red glowing claws, though!
“Top notch topography” 😂🤣😂🤣
great vid man, lots of good individual tidbits of hobby knowledge along with some of the knowledge tropes of your other vids. 10/10 Impressive.
Love the icycles! I will copy your work soon! :)
Your basing videos are my favorite. This one really rocked, thanks!!!
I’m happy you’ve decided to do another festive video!
I am super excited and super happy that Jay is super excited and super happy at how these models turned out!!! I am almost inspired enough to try the alternate flying base from idea on some inceptors….or maybe I will be lame and buy something that works from Etsy 🤔
Sharp sand is fun to base with, makes a nice mound effect
Great vid. Loved how these turned out and the poem was great :)
Try sprinkling the snow over the base when the snow paste is still wet for a fluffy snow look.
Wow that caro and santa look amazing forealz man
These came out great. The base techniques will be great for my other half's space wolves.
Great ideas! Very helpful and inspirational.
icicles totally look like that irl. snow would land on that rocky point, slowly compress into ice and slowly melt into icicles :)
Tio for the black plastic rods: try looking for abs inlay material for guitar building on luthier supply shops like stew mac or LMI. They should be quite cheap. I recon you might find some in black. I hope this helps!
Dang!! New to the channel, and this is an instant sub. So many ideas, so little time.
Never did basing till I saw ur vids way back when now honestly one of my fav parts of hobbying
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
I used milliput to make a collosal cast turret for my baneblade, (as the original turret had been partly converted and wasn't looking great, and I wanted to give it a really impressive main gun, because I'm all about that) i like milliput as it is comparatively cheap, grips well and sculpts well, and can be sanded back for nice results.
I'm doing some snow on black templar, so glad I found this. I have the citadel snow to try out, but it's my first time ever doing snow effects so will have to see how it goes. I don't want like fully artic bases though, just a little bit of snow on top of gothic ruins. the icicles look amazing though, so I'm going to have to try this.
8:56 - excellent segue
I'd argue that the platform for Cato is totally realistic. Catty Sicarius, i mean Cato. Yes Cato Sicarius seems totally like the type of guy to climb up onto things.
Youre content is soooo good.. u should hav like 2.000000 views on every vid.... cannot remember to be disapointed by anything u filmed.. keep going! Greetings from Germany!
I have used the tiny metal fittings for joining wire in jewelry. These make terrific shell casings and are actually metal.
Still hoping for that „Black Templars John Blanche Cover“ basing tutorial :)
That Cato model is legendary
amazing job
He, Cato Sicarius, looks really good on that base.
the poem was the real art
Not going to lie, I when I first saw the pine bark, I thought it was beef jerky, now I'm sad that I don't have any jerk on hand...
Ah, the cool Cato Sicarius!
The one who looked like he earned his honores!
Dick Banner sounds like a 60s super hero's alter ego.
Master basing like a Chad
Lol i love these videos so entertaining I actually dont get anything done thanks Jay and Nick 👍👌👀🤯😂🍺
Santa has to protect his workshop from striking elves maybe or from naughty boys and girls that are mad for not getting toys lol
Great video man, keep em coming =)
Great poem
On the first day of Christmas some nerd gave to me, the return of seasonal content!
I can tell pas you that they are amazing!
that slow zoom during the intro is 👨🍳's😘
I would use Santa and the Elves at Veteran Guardsman in Kill Team. lol
"I put a model in a drawer and forgot him for a YEAR!"
Looking at the models on the side of my table that have stood there for at least 4 years....
Great idea on the icicles!
I may have laughed too hard at the comment "dick banner", it caught me off guard.
everyone at work thinks I'm watching pron at work now with that intro ! lol
"I'm secretly good at basing", well yeah, tell me something i don't know
Another great video. Through the video I couldn't help wondering, who are Santa's enemies?
When you said you used the snow as packing peanuts, I thought you meant you shipped something and filled the box with fake snow.
Every time you say pine bark nuggets you make me hungry.
You definitely are the basing final boss
Jay...it isn't a secret you are good at basing :P
Great vid as always. I’m torn between Cato and Santa. I own a bare metal Cato somewhere, I should paint him up. Keep up the great work.
You are the ghost of bases past, present and future!
How did you make getting basing supplies so epic 5:00
Whaaaat?! You've never even done ANYTHING with bases ever in your many videos before either(!) :P
I'm sure you have heard of this by now, but have you thought of mixing green stuff with miliput? It has thr stickiness of green stuff and the sandability of miliput.
Dope!
I think it's possible for icicles would stick out from the tip of that rock. It might have formed a sheet on the underside but once one drop of water drips early it'll start an icicle.
Welcome to art. Where skill is superficial (not really but it feels like it) and all that matters is the whims of the gods
Dude you are so good at painting, inspiring but also crushing because I fucking suck.
I HAVE to get that Santa model
2:00 I love how a simple series has effected all us 40k players into saying certain things like his name
0:27 it was cool
Not sure if you have videos on it already, but I'm in desperate need of how to do swamp and tropical jungle type bases and terrain for my homebrew Necron dynasty. I would love to see your take on these and what good materials would be good to use. I know for sure that moss will play a factor but I need to see how it can be applied on bases and models to see if it would actually look cool (like draping it over a model like cloak or wrapped around legs if emerging from a swamp, etc.).
