How I Drilled a Water Well. Shallow Well 30 feet Deep

  • I used common plumbing fittings and my water hose to drill a well 30 feet deep. I thought I was in water bearing sand but after I stopped at 30 feet, the water drained out of it. I poked a small hole down and found that the water table here is at 33 feet...so I will have to go down a little farther to get to the water.

    I did a 40 foot diy well once. We used air and water to jet down. The one detail you should not skip is putting gravel pack around the screen. Another more important part it putting benonite around the well to prevent surface contaminates from going down the outside of the well to the screen. This is critical. You will get large amounts of bacteria and nitrates if you dont.

    The water coming out of your casing while digging is normal. That carries your cuttings! Tells u what your digging through! I cut a notch in my casing to direct the water to my run off ditch. The material in the ditch tells me the status of the dig! Dig a ditch in the downward direction away from hole and keep from getting to muddy!

    • @beaupeep
      @beaupeep Před 4 lety +2

      @@leel6429 Use a slide hammer, like pounding in a T-post. Well points have a heavy, octagon shaped "arrow" on the end and the well screen usually comes attached, right behind the point. Use a coupler to add extra lengths of pipe, be sure to put a cap on the top of the pipe to keep the hammer from messing up the threads.

    usually, you can pull up hydrological data from websites for your area. that you hit water at 30 feet is not uncommon, but sometimes the water is fowl from surface contamination. remember that you have many different types of aquifers and you need to drill deep enough to have water in drought. one last comment, you said you needed little screen (the number of cuts as you were using a hand pump. the ability of the water to enter the bore is based on the hydrostatic pressure outside the bore. if the pressure outside is almost equal to the pressure inside do to slow pumping action, a few cuts might be okay. but if the pressure inside the formation is low and the pressure inside your bore starts to drop off, the flow into your casing will also be slow... something to keep in mind

    I got the 6 inch hand auger. Dug 25 feet. Dropped in a 4 inch pvc casing with some slits cut in about 5 feet of it on thr bottom witha cap at the end. Dropped in 9 foot of pea gravel thrn filmed the res of the hole worh mud . then cemented the top to cap the top. Put a 1"1/4. Pipe with a foot valve about 12 off the bottom of that. Ran that to my well pump.

    your quite creative and i hope to see a follow up on this ,,, here is what we used to do for shallow wells , the old air jack hammers if you can find one , at farm supply out fits you can get gravel head tips and sand tips to screw on 1 1/2 inch pipe screw that onto your pipe ad get 4 foot sections of threaded 1 1/2 pipe i always used grevel tip , sand tips have problems , drive the pie down with the jack hammer , this part can be done with electric jack hammer preferably 90 pound , it takes roughly 2 weeks to go 30 feet first 5 to 10 feet go rather quickly , when you get to the desired depth shove the airhose to the bottom of the well and give quick blast of air , make sure you have rain gear on for this , by blasting air down their it creats a cavity for water to colect in , if a well has slowed in produceing water you can do the same thing to open water viegns or you can shoot a 44 mag down your well and the concusion reopens it to get water flowing again , im not a well drillir but i do have some expirience with this stuff

    I liked the part for the end that you fabricated, I put in a well 17 years ago and bought such a part, The part had a ball captured in the end that floated up and sealed the end once you were done. I'm curious how you sealed it so it drew water through the slits and not the end.

    I have watched a few of these and the DIY Drilling head is good. My questions are about the Gravel dropped along the pipe into the well. what is the purpose and what stops the gravel from washing away if your water source has any flow?
    What kind of gravel is best and How much gravel should I use.. I have a very shallow 13-15 ft well for watering grass, keeping a pool level up but the original casing pipe is 3 inch encased in a concrete slab and i'm replacing it with four inch with a Cap on top to seal my 1 1/2 center pipe. Do I need to seal the bottom of the casing pipe or will the gravel do that for me?
    Someone said something about 'Bentonite' .. as part of the sealing procedure.. how does that work and is there a link showing how to best use that? Thanks for any advice.. from anyone

    • @backyardmetalcasting
      @backyardmetalcasting  Před 4 lety

      I just put some gravel around the pipe when I was done. my idea and understanding is that it would help seal the pipe because it would stop the soil from dropping down too far. clay helps seal the sides of the hole so you can drill deeper especially in sandy soils

      @@backyardmetalcasting Thanks.. My 3 inch pipe is already through a slab of concrete..gonna be a Bear to break it loose and replace but I'll reseal it with concrete. As far as the Gravel.. I found 'part of my answer.. You should put enough gravel in around the Pipe to cover the Slits you cut in the casing to further filter any trash from entering. I'll reply back or make a vid myself when I get this done.. Take care.
