    Known Errors: At 42:25 Duke put Leatherneck into his hand with his ability but you can only do that with a G.I (starting Joe) NOT any Joe character!

    • @PickleTheHutt
      @PickleTheHutt Před 2 lety +7

      I didn't notice if you corrected it with subtitles later but the extra wild skill per soldier from Duke's ability is also only for GIs. It wouldn't have mattered for the final mission as you rolled bonkers successes again (and had the Knowing is Half the Battle card to add a bunch more hits, this card seems really powerful, maybe too good) but you definitely should have had a lot fewer dice than stated.

    • @OneStopCoopShop
      @OneStopCoopShop  Před 2 lety +4

      Ah yes I will also include that in the subtitle because that makes a BIG difference! Thanks! The dice rolling overall was insane in this game. . . Didn't realize it until you mentioned it haha!

    The basic Joes trashing themselves after a mission is a nice twist. It does seem like it can snowball a bit, although preventing that seems like part of the strategy.

      Yup! Totally agree, I do like that failing a mission doesn't mean auto fail either and you can still win even with a failed mission!

      I think if you’re playing Duke (who can get these basic GI from your discard) it adds some more strategic decisions cause the GI’s get +1 Wild Die if he’s upgraded so you’re not going to want to destroy them all or his power is useless.

    Great stuff thanks Colin! Looks fun even though I've never seen GI Joe.
    Not sure it was even screened in the UK and it was after my time! lol
    When the Joe cards were removed from the game, it doesn't sound right to "destroy" them when they've helped in a successful mission.
    They go for promotion training and come back in the game as characters! lol
    How did you think this one compares to Venom Assault? GI Joe seems to have a couple of extra layers to it, but my memory is bad so may be doing Venom Assault a disservice!

    • @OneStopCoopShop
      @OneStopCoopShop  Před 2 lety +1

      Paul thanks so much for watching and I like your idea they come back as characters! As for the comparison to Venom assault: Well you have to remember I played with 6 missions instead of the 9 so I would say timing is comparable. I feel like this game is much "cleaner" and more straightforward. There is a lot less to remember that Venom Assault as you don't have 8 leaders sitting on the board potentially having Global Effects. However I do feel like the cardplay in Venom Assault is much better, and the complications here are not nearly as crippling as the ones in Venom Assault. So far I would give a nod to Venom Assault over this one, but it is super close. . . I need to play this one more I think!

  • @PickleTheHutt
    @PickleTheHutt Před 2 lety +6

    I'm only halfway through watching right now but wow is your dice rolling really making it look easy. When we played last weekend I could only roll misses. In one of my attempts I rolled 10 dice with all being misses (1/1024 chance there) on one of our important story missions. Needless to say, we lost. I'm worried that the failure results on story missions are too punishing if you happen to have bad dice luck. In Venom Assault, there's no penalty other than a wasted round if you roll terribly, very different than the huge swing from success to failure on story missions in this game. I also like that in VA you can lower enemy defense down (once you have good rewards and/or supports) so that every die succeeds on 1s or 2s to really overcome the randomness. There's no way to do that here as each die is always 50% miss. There are a few ways to add auto-successes but in general you'll always be at the mercy of fickle 50% dice. I think I would have preferred if each die had 4 hits sides with no double hit side. The expected value per die would be the same but the variance would be greatly reduced.

    • @OneStopCoopShop
      @OneStopCoopShop  Před 2 lety +3

      GREAT GREAT points Kenny! I totally agree on the dice, and how in Venom Assault you can actually lower the "hit" value. The big thing I think here is you want to have re-rolls up your sleeve like nobody's business as that helps a ton. Thanks so much for watching and I still can't believe you missed with 10 dice. . . .

    • @LaffinJoker
      @LaffinJoker Před 2 lety +3

      Normally only the Story missions have penalties for failure. Normally (unless of course you’re rolling like a lottery winner) if you’re not able to get a decent number of dice with some rerolls then you should probably focus on Side Missions and Recruiting until you’re ready.
      I wouldn’t remove the Double Hit, I love sending a lone GI on a Side Mission and I get a Double Hit or I send 2 and 1 of the dice might fail but the other one is a Double so I still beat it. I think the uncertainty adds to this game.

      Someone came up with the idea of using G.I. Joe Mission Critical dice for Joes that bring the right skills for the mission, like stealth for example. Since the Mission Critical dice have a slightly higher chance of a success it is thematic. I bought the dice separately on Renegade's website to try it for myself.

    How does it compare to Venom Assault? I feel one of the weaknesses of VA is, when playing two handed solo, that there is no difference or what so ever between the two decks. Every hand has the same cards, the same abilities, same everything.
    On the other hand, having regular D6 might be less fancy than special success/failure dice, but it brings a little more flexibility. The fun part is to tinker around with cards that and lower the success values.
    Can you already say which one do you prefer?

    • @OneStopCoopShop

    • @LaffinJoker
      @LaffinJoker Před 2 lety

      Those icons represent Land (Tank), Air (Jet) and Sea (Battleship) Missions and like he said you don’t have to take a vehicle specific to that Mission BUT almost all the vehicles (besides the Vamp) have certain bonuses that come into affect only when the icons match. Some of the Joe’s have these symbols and if it matches (the Mission) you get their bonus as well. I think it’s very thematic.

      Venom Assault with expansion is my all-time favorite deck builder (I only play solo or co-op games). I enjoyed my play of GI Joe with a friend enough to purchase my own copy but if I had to choose between them VA would win hands down. Perhaps that might change if GI Joe has really great expansions as with base games only, I would rate both pretty similarly.

      Given the consistent feedback about this GI Joe game’s poor rulebook, and that I have VA with the coop/friendly expansion, I think this is a pass. I absolutely HATE games with poor rulebooks. VA can get what I call “mind-fiddly”… Lot of stuff going on, lots to remember, its long, but its fun. I heard this game may be slightly more refined, maybe a little easier to play but if the rulebook is as bad as people are saying, I’d probably end up being too frustrated. So yeah… pass on this. VA w/expansion is very cool if you have the time to play it.

      Transformers is a huge miss for co-op (the only way I play) as it's really a competitive game with a poor co-op/solo mode tacked on. I'm keeping my copy for now hoping that the expansion's rumored alternate play modes includes a better co-op version. I enjoy the art and nostalgia but the gameplay is currently pretty bland for solo/co-op. GI Joe is a much better game since it's designed as a fully co-op experience. It makes no sense for the Transformers game to be competitive when everyone is playing autobots in the base game.

The co-op really shines through here, I think better than any other Deck Builder I've ever played. It really feels like every turn you're doing something instead of waiting for your allies/friends taking their turn.
      I enjoyed Venom Assault, but it really feels like every time you went on a mission with a good plan, all the venom cards and what not would leave you with like 5-10% chance of success until late in the game when you had other cards to mitigate what the game throws at you.

      Yeah I played with the expansion. There is some good co-op fun to be had there but it just feels like the game really punishes you by weakening your attacks (dice rolls) with all the venom card draws. Also if I remember correctly the teamwork cards are situational and need to be drawn the same way they are in Legendary Aliens/Predator. In G.I Joe, it felt like every turn we were helping each other out and planning and coordinating our moves together. Never got that feeling of working together on every turn in another deck builder before.

    It's a fine video but I think it could be cleaner. I.e. you selected the Expert difficulty adding +1 to missions.. then the whole video your goal won't match the printed, visible cards. Why the need? Just do a tutorial over what's on print to make it more clear to the viewer without having to reference the +1 all the time. The start could have been cleaner too, you used a large portion talking about specific things before talking about the overall goal. Constructive fb for the future
