Raising Muslim Children in the West | Hina Mirza

  • Raising kids as Muslims in today’s world is no easy feat. We are constantly dealing with negative portrayals of Muslims in the media, and sometimes, even within our own communities. But how can we overcome these challenges, and use them as opportunities to truly teach kids to love Islam, and pride themselves for their Muslim identity? How can we our educational institutions foster and help empower the Muslim identity in Muslim kids - or can it? Hina Mirza joins us to discuss this very interesting topic.

*There are countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and many in Africa Morocco, Algeria, Tunis, East Africa there are many Muslim's in East of Africa we even have a Turkish school. In Middle east like Oman, Qatar, e.t.c where someone can shift and live better. Possibilities are there but it depends with you. The problem with our Islamic Ummah they feel living in Europe is the best option only for them and their children to speak English with good accent. Many parents don't appreciate a Teacher who is a Non Native English speaker yet they teach with all their hearts but I heard many parents saying a White Teacher is the best for their children. We are not united and we keep down our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters who are Teachers. Now people have to face the fruit they said it was better than the other!*

I feel like she is using "equality" incorrectly... I feel like Islam promotes equality between sexes but not sameness. So we are equal in value, but we are DIFFERENT. Equal but different. Equal in value, but different in some of our roles in society. I think making sure the language is used in a way that really accurately depicts the true and equal value given to both men and women in Islam, by God (the Exalted) needs to be emphasized. Like for example a female has A, B and C, and a Male has D, E and F. We each have our own special tasks/responsibilities. At the same time, on the day of judgement, we will be judged in the same ways. I just really feel like Islam doesn't promote an idea of inequality, but of difference.

Did she not say that tho? We aren't the same. We're spiritually equal but ofc we have differences, feminine side(having baby, taking care of the baby/feeding it, etc) and the masculine side(working, protecting, paying, etc). I feel like she said something like that, indicating that only girls can have babies and so on. Allah Azzawajal knows best.

Thanks for the video, very nicely put together and simple to understand. It should not offend anyone since it is all common sense and the commentator did not force her opinion on anyone but guided us as to how to tackle some of the issues faced by not only muslims but all concerned parents. If someone tries to put her or Islam down, the only thing we should do is, pray for them and hope they can also see the light. Please don't bring the religion in discussion, and once again this lecture was all about common sense.

KJ forgot to mention the 1998 pilgrimage Haj Mecca . A great sight seeing tour. One morning i was making excuses and had a lie in (extra sleep) while super energy orange beard and group went to pray at the Kaaba, but apparently there was some robbers breaking in the apartments and when they reached ours they found me sleeping snoring away. When the group came back from prayer there was panic until they found the money safe then said ' Praise Allah you saved Us' KJ reflecting back, what did i do?

Become sufficiently knowledgeable in the religion and home-school them. Or bring them to an Islamic country in a pious sector of the population.

Muslims lack parenting skills. I have witnessed this for 15+ years. Currently I have Muslim neighbors with several small children. Bed time is a struggle and the ear piercing shrieks go on from 6pm to 2am every night. Instead of comforting and loving their children they let them run wild and then scream and yell at them. No structure no compassion. Very painful to hear. Turn down the lights, turn off the tv read a bed time story while having a snack or something to drink. Hug kiss go to sleep. I know toddlers can be difficult but they only turn into monsters when they do not get the love and discipline they need. Letting your kid scream for 8 hours straight and then allowing the older kids to bully the younger ones is despicable.

mssummerrose1 Most converts are women. Read about the role and high status of a women in Islam. U are fighting for ur basic rights while we are enjoying more of it since 1440 years ago. What is god given cannot ever be better than what flawed humans thinks is good for them. This battle of the sexes that u guys have going on is put at rest 1400 years ago by Islam. We love our men and they love their women, we enjoy our rights given by the creator to us for freedom to education, to marry, to divorce, to earn our own earnings, to never spend on a household but be cared for first by our fathers and brothers and then by our loving husbands, to be respected and given high status from our role as mothers and caretakers of our kids, we have a right to inheritance again that money becomes all ours with nothing to be spent on a household expenditure as that is the part where the man is responsible for. Men and women are equal in Islam in the sight of Allah, we are ranked based on our good deeds. We are different in our physique as each has his role in this world.

They will believe everything an adult tells them. Give them a fair chance and wait untill they have reached an age on which they can distinguish fiction and reality. (say 18 years).
