2004 Dodge Ram No Park Lights

  • This 2004 Ram had no park lights. The Park Lamp relay control circuit is setting a fault code in the Front Control Module. Problem is likely a corroded printed circuit trace inside the main fuse panel. I temporarily connected a relay into the circuit to supply the Park lamp relay a ground whenever the ignition is on.
    here is a video requested on more detailed explanation on how to wire the relay.

    A new TIPM is probably $1500 CAD? Im just guessing. I like your repair and think we will have to see more of that kind of work arounds for sure. Money aside, if it was mine, that is the way I would do it. Some one needs to start repairing and reselling with exchange those TIPMS (I am sure someone does somewhere). If I understand it right, the problem is gonna be when the headlights don't want to come on? Great video and explanation Phillip.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 2 lety

      I know what the problem is as I have taken apart a TIPM with the exact same problem. They do not come apart easily as I mentioned. There are several layers to the circuit boards inside and it is hot melted together. The printed circuit trace gets attacked by the salt that wicks into the unit and the trace corrodes. If it were simpler to disassemble I would fix it. Problem on this one just affects the parking light relay control. This is the 4th one I've had. I could run the positive control wire for that extra relay to the dash illumination circuit and that way the relay I installed would come on with the dash lights instead but this will work and its easier for now. The customer said he may have another used one..

    Which molded studs need to be drilled out to open up one of those integrated power modules? I've drilled out 3 round ones that were obvious but she still doesn't want to open... or do I need a bigger hammer? 2004 2500 ram btw.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před rokem

      Every fuse and relay mut also be removed. There are 3 or 4 round holes you can see about 3/8" in diameter. It's still a pita from what I remember. There are also several layers of circuit boards inside.

    My 2002 ram is doing exactly the same thing. Several years ago I just made some jumper wires from two pins off the relay bypassing the control side and simply running the jumper wires to the inside of my truck to a toggle switch mounted on the dash bingo fixed my issue been running it this way for several years with no issues. I just have to remember that each time I turn my headlights on I have to flip the toggle switch as well. It’s some redneck engineering but wayyy cheaper than buying the whole fuse block

    So my driver side parking lights & driver side plate light don’t work, brakes and blinkers work, I jumped the relay and same thing… can’t see any bad wires and I’m getting 9 volts. Puzzled, what do you think sir?

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 11 měsíci

      Should be battery voltage at least 12v. Likely have a corroded wire in the harness. Follow the circuit from the light.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 2 lety +2

      Not really. Do you have the same problem? If you're really stuck I suppose I could make one since I still have that other TIPM. Possibly you could source a used TIPM if you're in the USA.

      @@PhillipBailey yes the same problem. I tried copying what u did but didn’t work for me. Does it matter which way the relay is turned when hooking up the wires?

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 2 lety

      @@frankmodaffare1251 yes the auxiliary relay has to be connected correctly. Pin 86 is connected to the ignition switched terminal which is open in the missing relay in the tipm see 6:05 in this video. Pin 85 and 30 of the new relay are connected to ground. I ran a wire out of the tipm to a fender bolt. Pin 87 will be connected to the control pin of the park relay on pin 85. I used 20 gage wires as the current is very low. Remove the park relay and solder the wire to the side of the relay that is switched ground which i believe is 85. Confirm the pins in the relay center on the park relay for power with the key on. I believe 30 and 86 will be powered so 85 needs to be grounded to turn on the park relay . In essence the new relay should turn on with the ignition and supply a new ground to the park relay. Hope that makes sense. If you can't figure it out let me know and I will try make a short video for you.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 2 lety

      Not sure what's wrong. A buzzing relay typically means low voltage to the control coil. If you connect a test light across the control circuit which are pins 85 and 86 will it light brightly. You could have a different problem in the tipm.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 10 měsíci

      That's not this problem. I'd say there's a broken or corroded wire. What year is your truck? The park lamp relay powers fuses 32 for right side, 33 for trailer and 34 for left side. I'd check fuse 34 in this case. If it's good test for power at C1 pin 19 white/yellow wire under the TIPM.

      @@PhillipBailey 2005. Ram 2500 Cummins. I’ve checked the fuse it was busted, replaced it with spare fuse in the fuse box and it popped soon as I turned on lights. I bought set of new fuses today I may try one again and see what happens, if it pops again I’ll start tracing down some wires 🤦‍♂️😤

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 10 měsíci

      @jonesfarm1836 if the fuse pops there is a short to ground. Connect a headlight in place of the fuse. Turn the park lights on. When the short is present the headlight will light up bright. With the headlight on move the harnesses on the left front and left rear. Watch for the headlight to flicker or go dim. Check the front and rear bulb sockets, has it been in an accident or does it have a plow on it with lights?

    Why couldn't you just leave the relay switch on there? Where can you buy?

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 2 lety

      If you're referring to the relay test switch I was using to jump pins 30 to 87 at the relay if you left that installed you would have to manually turn it on and off each time you wanted the lights on and off. I wanted something automatic and my solution automatically turns on the park lights with the key. You could run wires to the headlights and use two diodes to isolate the high and low beam but thats too much work. I'll post a link to the relay switches shortly.

      Yes I have taken them apart and it's not a case of cleaning. There will be a corroded printed circuit. They don't come apart conveniently either.
