How to troubleshoot car light problems, such as lights not turning off or one-on one-off.

  • Sooner or later your car is likely to have light problems. It could be caused by bad light bulbs, fuses, switches, relays, battery , or simply loose or shorted wires. The light problem might be that one side is on and the other side is off. It could be that lights are always on or won't turn on at all. Or they could be flickering. This video discusses ways to test and eliminate possibilities so that you can quickly focus on the real faulty components. This method can be applied to other electrical circuit, the 6 steps should be:
    1. draw a electrical diagram
    2. measure every exposed points.
    3. mark the measured points on the electrical diagram.
    4. construct a truth table (as shown in this video) to eliminate good components and further narrow the search to trace the circuit.
    5. once the search is narrowed, remove the faulty component for test.
    6. And repeat from #3

      My problem is not the brake light it's the tail lights on my car that won't cut off. The mechanic replaced the switch for the brake light and but that was not the problem. It's the taillight and I cannot find any solution online for this problem. The dashboard lights are coming on and stick in also when the engine is off. Does anybody have a solution?

    i.hope you can help me with my 05 Toyota Prius. The dealers are going to burn me to replace my rear brake lights. Unfortunately, my friend borrowed my car when the brake lights went out. Well, today, I took a chance to get to the store, I was going to use my hazard lights should anyone be behind me if I stopped, but they don't work either. My check engine light has been on for a while, but it's set like that so you get regular maintenance after reaching so many miles, so I already have to go to the thieving Toyota dealers. That always cost $350 plus what they can scare me out of! Please.help with any advice about my brake and hazard lights. I suppose I better check and see if I have any lights at all! Thank you!

    Great video, very informative. I have an '07 Nissan Versa. The brake lights work when the tail lights are off. However, when the tail lights are on, the brake lights do not work. 1. does the Center Mounted Light (on high top) work?
      2. just a reminder or something to be aware to help you to debug: the brake lights and the tail lights may be on the same globe, some cars may have a dual filament bulb that acts as a dual purpose bulb. When lights are on they are tail lights, when service brake is pressed the second filament is activated acting as a brake light.
      3. sometimes when ground wire has weak connection, it may not show failure until higher currents go through ground wire. So when you want both brake and tail lights work at the same time, the ground wire may fail.
      4. you should fill in the following table of 8 combinations, to see which of the 8 combinations fail:
      center brake tail

    My 01 Sequoia parking lights come on sometimes when the Sequoia is off. And this will drain my battery. I guess I should check the light switch, parking light relay, tow light connections? Anything else that may cause this?

    • @GeniusAsian
      @GeniusAsian  Před 3 lety

      there are 5 parts: battery, fuse, switch, light bulb, wire. You can test each part and "eliminate" the one that you demonstrate to be a working part. Since the light is on sometimes, you may assume the light bulb is working, the fuse is working, the battery is working. The switch has higher probability to fail, you should test it.
      Do you have rats in your car? Rats like to chew wires. (no kidding, I have seen rat's dropping in cars) Once the wires are exposed, it may cause shorts, thus could cause lights turning on.

      when you said " I have also swapped the bulb but came up with the same problem, any solutions", I assume your "same problem" means the left break light stays on. Does the left break light turns on when while driving without breaking?
      You may want to check the break switch first, if the switch is fine, then check left wires.

      make sure you understand brake light is different than tail light. Your description is not very clear which switch is on or off while what action did you take, if you can make a truth table listing all the combination of the the switch changes and the light condition, it would be easier to location the problem. Without knowing the truth table, in general you may use ohm meter to check circuit to ground, press your brake while measuring the voltages to trace the problem.

      you said " brake lights wont turn off.....definitely is that little piece up under brake pad", the brake light switch is under the dashboard, but the brake pad is the mechanical part, not related to the electronic component (see the circuit diagram). If you want to find out the fuse, for some cars there are two places for the fuse box. One is under the hood, the other is inside the car under the dashboard.

      if you are really sure the light is supposed to be off (sometimes if you did not turn off the light after you left the car, the light may be off after a few minutes), then you should measure the voltage at the bulb when the car is running, if there is no voltage, then you can trace the wires. If you have a multimeter, you can trace to see if any voltage at the bulbs, if not, then trace to see brake switch etc. Also from comments of this video, many people are not aware there are differences between taillight/parking light and brake light. Very common they are in the same bulb, if they are duel filament bulbs it is very well possible that only one filament is blown and not the other.

    My VW Passat 2011 (facelift model - Ireland) rear right tail light **sometimes** doesn't turn on, but a light smack on the light unit from outside turns it back on. I've already ripped the trunk apart looking for faulty wiring, I've replaced the bulb several times, I've cleaned all contact points and pinched any clips to be tighter to get better contact but the same issue still occurs. I'm honestly out of ideas, so maybe a new perspective would help. Thanks!

    • @GeniusAsian
      @GeniusAsian  Před 3 lety

      Yes, the on-and-off situation is difficult to debug because you don't know how to reproduce the failure conditions. Two possible conditions: bad connection or short. If there is short, then it may have burned something, so it is unlikely. If it is caused by loose wire or bad contacts, then you need to test each inch of wire and every contacts. There are at least two wires going to the bulb, so you also need to check both of these two wires.
      Alternatively, you could also try to use a good wire to bypass one of the wires connected to the bulb. After the bypass, if your problem disappears, then it is that wire that caused the problem. When you perform the bypass, make sure you know which wire is hot, which one is ground, so that you don't cause the short from hot to ground. Let us know your result, this will help other people.

    • @GeniusAsian
      @GeniusAsian  Před 2 lety

      the brake light bulb has two filaments (other bulbs may have only one), make sure you don't replace a wrong type of bulb. There could be different type of problems causing the same thing that you have described, for example shorts or ground faults or switch. That is why you should follow the the 3 steps shown in the video:
      1. draw a electrical diagram and measure every exposed points.
      2. construct a truth table (as shown in this video) to eliminate good components and further narrow the search to trace the circuit.
      3. once the search is narrowed, remove the faulty component for test.
      good luck and it could be fun to diagnose the problem if you follow the correct process. And let us know your result so that your result will help other viewers, thanks

      1. condition for headlights are working but tail lights are not working.
      2. condition for headlights are not working but tail lights are working.
      3. condition for headlights are working and tail lights are working (does it ever work?)
      Without knowing your car, it is difficult to diagnose it. In general, keep in mind a few points:
      4. Two lights in one bulb. Since you said both "headlights and tail lights are working" the light bulbs should be good, but as shown in the video the same bulb has two different lights, so you should not draw a wrong conclusion the bulb is good because the lights came from the same physical location.
      5. Generally when you flip the headlight switch that also turns on your tail lights.
      6. Some models have taillights on an automatic sensor which turns tail lights on when it detects a drop in ambient brightness. So you should examine if you got a bad Ambient Light Sensor

I can understand that if I put the bulb the wrong way in, then it's always off (note: not always on) no matter how I turn the switch on or off, however what is the condition a wrong way may lead to always-on result? If I turn the switch on or off, the wire at the socket would be connected or disconnected, it does not matter how wrong you shorted the wires because the power source is off.

      @@GeniusAsian I mean there are double contact bulbs for rear running lights/brake lights, theres two positions you can put them in, one is where its normally running lights on and when you press brakes it lights up more to indicate braking, the other position makes it so its always lighten up as if you are always braking.

    It was going well, ..I was ready to like and subscribe and then you lost me when you tested the light bulb with your multi meter and did not bother to explain the readings, what is normal, what is low, what is high, they we have no clue. How could you miss such a basic obvious thing? sorry... thumbs down from me.

      Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. There are many different types of bulbs, the traditional bulbs, halogen bulbs, LED bulbs, bulbs filled with xenon gas. They will have different meter reading if they are different types. Even for the same type they many have different reading. I would have listed different values if the title of the video were "different types of auto light bulbs."
      My second point is: usually a video with detailed light bulb resistance reading see here: czcams.com/video/XSspTwABECo/video.html and also I have detailed different types of wiper blades here: czcams.com/video/yeTBwjer7Lo/video.html these two videos don't have many views. It may indicate most people just want to know the ideas but don't care much about details. It may also mean people may not click a longer video. Anyway, still I appreciate your input, and include more details in the future.

      you sound like the type to ask for a manager at the store for a nice discount.

      @@calamity333 In your local area you may be able to ask for a manager for a discount, but In US manager's main role is to resolve dispute not to change the prices. I used to be poor and felt ashamed, but now I make videos to help poor people, I don't look down on them.
