Visit SFT new WEBSHOP bit.ly/2SFsGAp We had dream to build snowmobile on wheels and now we did that! It was super easy to do and super fun to ride :D Maybe the best thing what we have built ever haha!!
Yeah running over a hard packed icy lake is enough to burn the hyfax sliders on a snowmobile. Have had a 2002 Edge X 600 and if you aint get enough snow in the tunnel for cooling it shuts down in ignition mode to some kind of limp mode. I know that people have put a extra radiator + electric fan in the front when doing stuff like this. And sprayed the sliders with a whole lot of WD40 or likewise.
This is some old legendary video on some hoonigans in my old hometown on a "Polaris Edge" in city traffic at night: czcams.com/video/wYjTTtsxoFc/video.html They modded the machine with a extra cooler and fan infront. Dont know how they did with the lubricant on the hyfax. Anyhow 1:00 minute in the video they drive past the local police station. =P
Cool stuff! My father had a setup called "snowmowheels" installed on his 1970 Arctic Cat Panther. Track and skis removed and a full frame 3 wheel was bolted up. It was fully registered as a motorcycle and he rode it to work daily in summer. Took off the kit and back to snow for winter. This brought back memories.
And they have multi terrain tracks and even tarmack tracks these are why spyders were created but that terrain is no worse that riding a hard ice and snow filled track I'd say the terrain is comparable to the winter so it's very convincing to do this for summer trailing for sure wash out the track after each run krown all the components to slow rust build
Wheel snowmobile, have converted 800 Polaris with reverse using tall Snowblower wheels, 5/8 th inch ready rod very simple, and useful in around gold claim for short work pulling trailers and transportation, used copper pipe for bering over 5/8 th inch ready rod inside rim works great, and crosses very rough terrain, and beaks trail nicely.
Penney Fabrication, Midland Michigan did this in the 60's and held a patent for a kit for the Polaris 440. The kit had real wheels in place of the track. He also held a patent for a forward/reversing transmission. Tried to sell it to Honda but never got it done. This was my grand father.
I can tell you you have no idea how much fun this is until you try it yourself. My friend did the same thing a few years back was tons of fun but you really have to add a radiator and fan to ride it more that 10-15 mins before the overheat light comes on, your gonna go thru tracks too, but they lasted pretty long on dirt for us, only crossing roads sometimes and one or two drag races down the asphalt. He got the sled for $500 with an extra track with it. Doesn't snow much where I live so they can be had super cheap.
Awesome video! Snowmobiles can drive on sand, gravel, etc. You just need the special track and slides for it. As for cooling, It is liquid cooled. Probably has a fan on it to cool it or the tunnel type system. It didn't overheat so it seems like it has sufficient cooling. I had a 440 2 cylinder snowmobile engine on a polaris trailblazer and those quads are friggin huge! It was really fast, did wheelies and I didn't need an adapter it fit in with the original transmission. Traded it though for a Honda NX250 dirt bike.
I had an older Polaris Indy with a 433cc engine given to me last week.. winter's over and it runs awesome with low miles so I put wheels on the front and it was easy to do and it is fun as hell to ride and goes from 0-60 much faster than a typical quad.. ppl look at me like I'm crazy when I ride it
Just a quick FYI - Track will need Lithium Grease to protect it. Also, the engine is liquid cooled (Unless it's fan. Dunno) And is cooled by a tunnel radiator that uses snow. Sooo. Yeah. Don't blow it up from overheating or from the track blowing off and you getting seriously injured.
It's definitely a liquid cooled, saw the motor for a second at the end, couldn't tell what cc it is though. An XC500 or bigger should have no problem hitting 65mph though, so the must've melted the slides pretty good for it to take that long to hit 65. The XC500'S(smallest liquid XC's) should hit at least 90mph. Won't be long til the rings are melted though.
Awesome sled bike! They have been doing this as well in Canada since the early 80’s. I’ve always wondered why it never caught on everywhere else. Great video!
The radiator is above the track under the seat and it’s cooled by the track kicking snow up onto the radiator. So this isn’t such a good idea, it’ll run hot as hell and seize up.
That's cool man, I made one of these back in 1978 out of a rupp, kept on twisting the frame and the chain kept popping off, so we put the bogie wheels back on, that damn thing was a tractor, climb any hill around.
You should have done the offroad test... BEFORE the drift test. It looks like you left most of your traction on the asphalt back at the drift test. You could literally see rubber spraying out from under that track while drifting. LoL
That really doesn't work so well your heat exchangers no longer working you need to put a radiator on it because all you're doing is basically demolishing that engine every time you run it because it has no cooling system and that suspension is set up to be constant lubricated with snow however they do make suspension kits that are designed specifically for use on asphalt this is not a new idea it's actually very very old they drag race snowmobiles on drag strips all the time
the things the tred is riding on is called "slides". when not cooled / "lubricated" by snow, they get worned out really fast. it is the slides that is sissling when they pour water on them. that is why this is not a regular thing.... awsome but not practical
@@boostedboys2342 how? The part where the track is being pulled from is in front of where the rider sits? It would need a chain and gear. And all the hardware. Lots of welding. That isn't easy dip shit. It can be done, but not easy.
Awsome, you know what you should do next to that sled, find a way to cutt the tred off an actual streak tire and some how make the track like a stream track
Easy man carefull how you reply to other people. It was only a thought, and as your probably know, some people just do this stuff not knowing how much of a money pit they get into.
Well, you guys convinced me that snowmobiles are the best vehicle ever. I'm selling my ATV and buying a snowmobile in the middle of Las Vegas. I'll show everybody I know what a snowmobile can do when you slap some wheels on the front!
Exactly. I'm wondering how long it lasted. Then again, I'm pretty sure these guys are finnish. Which is an old world English term for "Zero Fucks Given" !
Engines come as both aircooled and liquidcooled engines. Aircooled engines (usually below 500cc) only have a fan to keep them cool, meaning they can run whatever seasons, while liquid cooled engines have a radiator placed between the seat and the tracks where snow can collect. The bigger problem is the slides, which are 1m/3feet long plastic bits that the tracks glide against in the boggy. Rubber tracks gliding on plastic causes friction, and they can melt if not cooled by snow. That's why you see in the movie they spray the boggy with cold water.
yes snowmobiles need snow to cool them down because what happens is the snow goes up into the tunnel underneath the back of the sled and hits the tunnel radiator and cools them down without that snow you can overheat the engine and it can cause serious damage to the engine such as cylinder scoring piston damage and piston ring damage wrist pin and connecting rod bearing damage which would lead to you having to replace the crank as well or have it rebuilt so this is a Polaris XC in this video and yes it does have a liquid-cooled engine which needs snow to cool it down but there are other makes and models from Yamaha Polaris and Ski Doo and Arctic Cat that do not require snow to cool them down because they are air cooled engines and they have heat sinks around the cylinders and a fan that pulls air through those heat sinks to cool them down and that is pretty much the simple version to answer your question if you have anymore questions just go ahead and message me thank you
Yep, that exactly what I was going to say. They could also come up with some way to lube the sliders similar to a chainsaw oiler but they could oil it with dish soap.
AWESOME IDEA turning a seasonal vehicle into an all rounder! I mean it basically makes it all the more value BUT Id suggest your fabrication methods step up a notch and what is with quenching the weld like that dude you want it to break?
Track was designed to lubricate and cool with snow. Running it dry will eventually cause heat and friction breakdown. Running it in water is ok.
Yeah running over a hard packed icy lake is enough to burn the hyfax sliders on a snowmobile.
Have had a 2002 Edge X 600 and if you aint get enough snow in the tunnel for cooling it shuts down in ignition mode to some kind of limp mode.

Impressed with how well that actually worked Haha.
CanadianRandom they use to sell these as kits in Quebec back in the day.

Used Polaris XC for sale. Never abused, never overheated. Ran on groomed trails only.

man im pretty sure they dont give a fuck its just a sled they used for the video and if it gets destroyed who the hell cares lmao
Chris B it’s a old Polaris

Todd Peace they look at you like your crazy because you’re wrecking the track slides. And if it’s liquid cooled its definitely running hot.
It's funny I did a search on CZcams for Snowville with wheels in the front because this idea seems like a great idea to me great job guys
Super easy and fun! 😁 do it!
you know your addicted to snowmobiling when.... you make it drivable for summer

It's now an All terrain "snowmowheel" 😂😂😂 that thing is amazing👌
Thats good name 👍🏻👍🏻
+Pihvi It would be awesome if they gave it that name 👍👍👍
+Chris 👍👍👍
finnaly something that wears down the middle of the track 😂😂
Half snowmobile Half atv Full awesome :D
Wow this is amazing!i bet this was alot of fun building and riding!!!good job guys
Would make a great engine for a go cart or a off road buggy
an off-road buggy*

Nicely done.
looks like amazing fun. good job fellas :)
Now you only need to replace the sliders with rollers so that your track frame does not get destroyed by lack of lubrication.
The engine will overheat, the sliders will melt, and the track will be shredded after the first trail ride.
Looks cool, though.
gotta remember this when i go to move the sleds this spring!
Welcome to my laboratory where safety is number 1 priority.

God damn that sky is beautiful
Reminds me of trailer park boys tv show full send
Trailer Park Boys The Movie, Cory n trevor
It will seize up heat exchanger needs snow to cool the engine like a radiator
The dirt will cool it off don't worry 😂
back in early 70's a kit was available & you also had rear wheels to install in place of track using drive cogs to power rear wheels.
that forest road looks like the most amazing place for riding dirtbikes and quadbikes :DD
Slides must last about 20 mins

Not a new idea; was done in the 70's, but it is nice to see someone try it again.
Would this be bad for the snowmobile? I have a 1985 tundra LT and I want to try this
Is it air cooled? Might have an issue with that
How long before the engine and sliders burn out ?
Juste incroyable, magnifique !!!!!

What about the sliders burning up.
thats just amzing
I bet those sliders are lovin it
So many people concerned about the slides melting and giving their opinion. How do you not realize they dont give a shit.
the problem with it being used without snow is the engine overheat. have you done anything with that?
i think it is a fan cooled
it would have to have more mods than a fan
Exactly. I'm wondering how long it lasted. Then again, I'm pretty sure these guys are finnish. Which is an old world English term for "Zero Fucks Given" !
The fan isn't a mod, it's a factory fan cooled sled. There are no heat exchangers in the tunnel like a liquid cooled sled would have.
