Hillary Clinton and her fellow "hawks" have a lot to answer for. The destruction of Libya's government -- however problematic it may have been -- was a crime against humanity. It also probably led to these dams breaking.

Years of neglect and corruption led to this catastrophe and the victims were the poor people, the two dams have been built since 1978 and from then no one made maintenance for them, engineers who are working there have written a lot of reports about the bad situations of the dams but no one from responsible people took care of that , I am Libyan and I can say that the consecutive Libyan governments are ones of the most corrupted governments in the history.

Has anyone mention these were water collection and flood check structures and not storing water most of the time? They had collected sediment, but otherwise I suspect the structures themselves may have been sound. I suspect as well that the failure was due to the overwhelming and unprecedented nature of the weather, and contributed little to the extent of the devastation.
The fact is that the city formed on a delta that had been created by floods coming out of the wadi.
This was something that can be attributed to a warmer atmosphere that can cause these rare weather events to become less rare.
