- A week on from the devastating floods in Libya, ITV News correspondent Emma Murphy meets survivors who are struggling to come to terms with the tragedy in front of them.
On a hillside above Derna those who survived gather to survey what is left of their city.
To remember who they have lost and reminisce about how beautiful this place used to be, the waterfalls, the greenery.
Now there’s no greenery and the waterfalls are likely a reminder of when the dams burst and the water cascaded down.
As the light faded one week on, a little girl in a red Mickey Mouse T-shirt walked with her father. Hand in hand they looked out as he tried to explain what had happened.

Why? I herd one man say we new this was going to happen, that they new the dam was bad.. Ask yourself if you would chose to stay down river from a dam that is cracked and clearly going to brake.. I was there in Derna for 5 years. Good hearted people. Derna is a beautiful coastal city.. Really feeling sorry for them. Sad.. 😢

"Destiny"? Politicians...too many either start off as sociopaths or end up that way. It's a job that requires you to constantly focus on your own best interest while claiming to care about all sorts of high and mighty issues and while people's lives hang in the balance. It's not going to attract too many people who aren't sociopathic is it?
The people of Libya are completely screwed if this guy is an accurate representation of the government there.

Deeply heartbroken by the loss in Mai, Morocco, and Libya and many more suffering around the world. The international support and prayers mean a lot to our people, who've suffered due to the neglect of our government officials for political gain. Accountability lies with them, and their actions have taken a toll on our country. It's true that the civil war was a result of many factors, but we acknowledge our part in it. We are responsible and sadly fell for the trap layed out by certain entites.Either way, many of us have to start over in every aspect of life. Family legacies and generations were wiped out in a matter of hours and we have no choice but to accept it.
Libya was once one of Africa's most prosperous nations, and despite current challenges, we aspire to rebuild and unite in the future, even though it may take decades.
We hope to one day host and welcome you all from across the world. Until then, we won't rest until our beloved martyrs are found and given a proper burial.
I’m afraid that these dams were destined to fail during such biblical rain. These dams didn’t have emergency spillways which would survive such torrent of water. Look what huge rain did to Orville spillway in California. There was no water behind these dams before rain started. So it simply overfilled and got destroyed by overflowing water. Worst part is that it would be much better if there was no dams in the first place. As when they failed there was a lot of potential energy in that water which destroyed Derna. Without dams water flow would be gradual, still destructive but nothing like what happened.
Libya need an non corrupted govenment.

“Destiny” !! What an absolute slap in the face to all Libyan citizens. It was calculated misconduct and negligence. Those in power have been very successful in their deliberate mismanagement of this city. But the world is now watching, eyes wide open. This is a crime against humanity. They must be held accountable.

There is a 125 year old Dam in Kerala, India. Some experts have warned about its safety on several occasions. This Dam is built during British rule in India for irrigation of neighbouring Tamilnadu state. Beneath this Dam millions lives. But it is ignored due to some political and financial reasons.
Suggestion: don't live below a pounded earth dam when maintenance has gone south, for whatever reason. And don't live in a valley below a gas plant.
Prayers for you all to get that solved before something like this happens there.

It's evident that dams across the world need to be inspected rigorously as climate change can cause exceptional rains to fall in regions unused to so much rainfall.
Evidently, dams are being built only to bear a certain capacity of water, based on 'historical' rainfall rates, and not the rates spontaneously occurring now in random regions.
China is seeing one dam breach after another, due to poor quality workmanship and materials, and clearly this Libyan tragedy has resulted from much the same situation - weak dams built only to contain normal rainfall, failing to take into account the exceptional (which we have been warned to expect to happen for over 40 years).
If I was living near a dam now, I'd be campaigning to have detailed checks made on it. Locals need to be sure they're safe and capable of withstanding a greater burden of water than the area 'normally' receives.

A wave of water, 50meters wide and 7 meters high... There is no bridge that would have been able to handle that amount and force of water. The Gov is not to blame.
