Maya: nParticles to Polgyons to MASH

  • Particles can be generated within seconds. The result is an amazingly vivid animation without a single keyframe. However, if you want to refine the particle geometry, you need to convert the particles to polygons.
That's a straightforward process with, well, a flaw: Often you don't see any geometry at all, and the particles seem to be all gone, too.
This tutorial deals with this easy to solve problem. Finally we convert the ex-particles which have become polygon meshes to a MASH network.

Great tutorial!! However when I do, it the Polygons aren't in the same position as the particles were before... does anyone know the solution?

Hi Thank´s for your great tutorials ;-) Do you have a tutorial about how to replace particles with let´s say birds flying around. (is it the same work/technic as you showed)
And then I want to export out for an fbx file (or another file many) I want to take it into Nuke.
I am not sure how to render it out properly? Can you please help ;-)

chris, thanks for your comment! unfortunately i don't have time to get into this. new things are coming up, and i have a limited time slot for doing my tutorials. please consult the autodesk maya AREA. it costs nothing, and it's very helpful when it comes to specific questions.

You can replace the Particles with geometry using instancer.

Did you manage to export the birds? I'm struggling with that at the moment, I can't get the convert 'nParticles to Polygons' to work for some reason, so I don't know how to export the birds
