The only song I know of his that he didn’t write all by himself is Code of Silence which he wrote with Cyndi Lauper when he was experiencing a block. One of my favorites by him.
@@babybanchie7607 And he never plays it live and I don't know why...other than maybe he doesn't like it...but Code Of Silence is a favorite of mine too.

My favorite Billy Joel song...fantastic song and MEANING....just the way you are! Don't try to change stuff....be yourself & accept others for what the are.
I've seen so many reactors have that surprise recognition that the musician they thought originated a song didn't, especially people who've grown up on hiphop and who don't fully realize the implications of rap/hiphop being made up of "samples," bits of other people's songs cobbled together to be rapped over, and sometimes the bits taken are the best-known parts of a song, the chorus or the main riff. People who haven't heard the originals before, no matter how popular the originals once were, just have no idea.
A hugely successful 1977 song and Billy Joel's true breakout hit (as his 1973 masterful, minor hit "Piano Man" had faded from memory by then). This won Grammy awards for "Record of the Year" (the recording) and "Song of the Year" (the songwriting).
Billy is just so talented back then in the wonderful 70s up to today I've seen him multiple times and he puts on such incredible songs and props to the wonderful Barry white who also sang this song great reaction sir now I will check out your harry Chapin reaction keep reacting moving forward tnx
Yes, I saw that mentioned in an interview with Billy Joel, and mentioned in the short documentary "The Making of 10cc's I'm Not In Love", or some title like that. They were the first! I love that 10cc song, and I love all of Billy Joel's as well!
This song, if any by Billy Joel, is the one that equates him with the greats, like George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, any of those, from the generation before him. He is very jazz and pop oriented and not just rock and blends it all way. Older generation entertainers were all over the map singing this song. "Just the Way You Are" garnered two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARRI 🎂 Don’t feel bad. Billy is only underrated by people who are not familiar with his work. Once heard he is no longer underrated. An American singer/songwriter treasure. He’s won more awards for songwriting than you can imagine. Impossible to list all of his hits. Maybe you would like Baby Grand, his duet with the great Ray Charles? Start with the Piano Man album, most people dismiss his first album, Cold Spring Harbor, and go through the album River of Dreams and the songwriting and talent will blow you away.

Yes. A Classic. An American National Treasure. A superb performer. Hit after hit after hit, all memorable. Joel however rarely played it for many years because he wrote it for his 1st wife and after the divorce his band would sing alternate versions of the song in the background. LOL
His music is the soundtrack to the scenes of our lives and our memories, and his songs have been covered by the likes of Barry White, Barbra Streisand, the Beastie Boys and even The Simpsons.
He wrote those words straight from his heart that's why they are felt so deeply. I love it when you feel the same things as me when I hear you speaking about one of my favourite songs and possibly my favourite billy joel song. The sax solo is to die for. It seems that every note the sax plays is just perfect and harmonizes perfectly with the words and then this free flow jazzy runs so effortless. What a master on that instrument and how deeply he feels that song. In ranking the best sax solo in pop and rock music I think that would be number one. Another favourite billy joel song of mine that I love so much maybe even better than that one maybe my favourite billy joel song is: all about soul. This was the first song I ever recognized from Billy Joel and as a result it led me to buy my first album as a teenager, "The Stranger". The whole album was phenomenal. Incidentally my second album was "Aja" from Steely Dan. Both albums came out about the same time. Another classic from the 70's.
When this song came out in the 1970s, i was in college (sax player). we woke up one morning to this. About two measures into the Sax solo I told my wife "that's phil woods on sax!". She said "he wouldn't play on a pop tune." We had to walk into town (no car) to a record store to prove i was right. 😂

Fun fact about this song: Billy was thinking of doing it as a hard rock number, and his producer said, "No, you need to do it as a bossa nova". They argued for a bit but Billy eventually caved. And the rest is history, it hit #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Doubt very much a hard rock version would have done the same. It’s great that you listened to this on your birthday because Billy Joel actually wrote this song as a birthday gift to his wife. I hope you had a great birthday!
Billy Joel is another iconic, American songwriter. He’s up there with the best of them anywhere. He was one of the very first artists Russia allowed to play there in the spirit of openness which was a new policy to the outside in the late 80’s. 87 to be exact, I believe. They had never allowed an American “Rock” band to play there before. He had fans in their government I’m sure. Anyway, it’s an excellent documentary/performance film of this special set of concerts. It’s called, BILLY JOEL: A Matter of Trust - the Bridge to Russia. I highly recommend it because of the excellent performance and the total uniqueness of this even happening. Just a few years prior, this would never, ever have been a possibly in anyone’s mind, much less the Russians! So, it’s a groundbreaking musical ambassadorship. Billy handles it like the Boss he is. It’s a great watch and listen. Trust me on this, it’s fantastic! That’s the great thing about music, it crosses borders easily. That’s why the Russians were afraid of this, they knew they wouldn’t be able to stop the power of this type of music. The people would be that much less easier to control. Isn’t that wild? Oh No! No American Rock! The people will go nuts on us! And they knew it. How cool is that?
Happy belated birthday Harri!! From one October baby to another! Many years ago, had a local radio station dedicate this song to my first wife, shortly after we married. Great song! Billy Joel is a true classic icon.

You gotta listen to New York State of Mind from Billy Joel, one of his signature songs. Makes you want to live in New York. By the way The Stranger album where Just the Way You Are comes from is one of his best albums. Happy Birthday, welcome to Billy Joel.
As stated below, the Stranger is fantastic album. Start to finish. One of my other favorites from Billy is "Baby Grand" with Ray Charles....there is a great video with both in it. Happy Birthday!
Harri, I love the way you are so willing to give these songs a chance when you are used to another version, and to admit to really loving it! I can see your sincerity as plainly as if we were face to face! I've loved your channel since the very beginning and your elegance doesn't get past me!
Seen him in concert twice. Once in Melbourne, Australia and once at Wembley stadium in London. The Melbourne concert was my wife’s favourite of all time so we were so lucky when we planned a trip to the UK that he was playing a once off concert (2019). He ended this song with “and then we got divorced”
Listen to Billy Joel's "New York State Of Mind" for impressive NY blues, an homage to his influence Ray Charles. Billy Joel is one of the all time greats. Writer, singer, musician, outstanding on all 3 counts.
Here is a tip for you. If you haven’t seen it, the only real way to immerse yourself fully into that song. Is to watch the live version from The Old Grey Whistle Test. It’s a piece of magic
I was a teen when this was out and of course I was into Aerosmith, Zepplin, and whatever, but still, sometimes even a love song or ballad can transcend. As a musician, I simply love good music and musicianship. Billy is iconic and a master of melodies, lyrics and his chord structures and progressions are simply genius. If you haven't yet, react to Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. Another great example of his genius.
Unfortunately the sax player "Phil Woods" passed in 2015. I loved the "bouncy" feel of his notes on this. He really helped bring that song to life!....and jazzed it up.
Heard Phil Woods in person in a memorial service in a small church in Delaware Water Gap PA. He was playing for his departed friend. The acoustics were simply magical - I can still feel the shivers in my skin when I recall the beauty of his extemporizing.
Fell in love with the song first time I heard it 😍 was young teen seen him play in Madison Square garden a few years ago did not sing it did not care because he was amazing

As stated below, the Stranger is fantastic album. Start to finish. One of my other favorites from Billy is "Baby Grand" with Ray Charles....there is a great video with both in it. Happy Birthday!
Most importantly!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARRI!🎂🥂CHEERS
I love Barry White but I love Billy Joel more and this is my absolute favorites of his.
My husband and I were married in 2011. This was the song for our first dance ❤️❤️❤️Timeless.
Interesting...I never heard the Barry White version....this is pure mastery. I love the message. Don't change...I've you just the way you are.
The beauty is often in the simplicity.
I hope you have the happiest Birthday Harri! Great pick and reaction.
You bring a little sunshine into our lives.
This is a Masterpiece of music 🎶 🎵 Billy is a genius
It's been many years since I have heard this song and I have a new found appreciation for the song and Billy Joel
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
BILLY JOEL
An Innocent Man, and The Longest Time, We Didn't Start the Fire, and River of Dreams, Please.
OH HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, HARRY!!!
This is Billy's original song. I like Barry White. I'll have to check out his interpretation. He's got a cool voice.
Had this album fresh off the press, when i was 13, ♥️♥️♥️still!
YOU are a birthday gift to us.
🙂🥂
He really gets rolling on the fadeout, it's the best part of the song.
Heard Phil Woods in person in a memorial service in a small church in Delaware Water Gap PA. He was playing for his departed friend. The acoustics were simply magical - I can still feel the shivers in my skin when I recall the beauty of his extemporizing.
This was a monster sized hit for Billy Joel and one of my all-time favorites... So easy to listen to.
I'd forgotten how brilliant it is
Nothing better than old Joel
Happy birthday Hari. This song is from the stranger album. My favourite album by Billy Joel. Every song is a hit.
on Vienna he said "You can get what you want or just get old" I went back and got my MBA

Happy Birthday, Harri! ... I never knew that Barry White did a cover of Just the Way You Are." He did a good job.
