Structural & Development Considerations in the Caro-Kann | Climbing the Rating Ladder vs. 1644

- In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 10+5 game against a player rated 1644 on Chess.com. The line 1.e4 c6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e5 seems a little disjointed, though after the game's 3...Bf5 4.d4 e6 White could have played 5.g4, which is a sharp line of the Advance Variation. Instead, White develops in routine but less challenging fashion with Ng1-f3, Bf1-b5+, and Bc1-g5. Though White enjoys a development lead, the "bad marriage" of the knight on c3 prevents White from easily supporting the center with c2-c3 against Black's ...c6-c5 stab. Still, Black remains behind in development, and unwinding the kingside while plus timing ...c5xd4 remain important considerations.

Some content creators create clickbait titles. John prefers to go with titles that sound like the titles of academic papers. Love it!
Not sure what it says about me, but the second I saw the title, I fell in love.
😅
John does titles so you know what you’re getting into so you can enjoy his content without wasting your time. Excellent stuff, John
Worst thing is calculating a long tactical line and then starting with the second move instead of the first.
I absolutely love queenless middle games, which I consider a particularly delicious part of the master's menu of tasty winning techniques. I also have a very high opinion of the Caro-Kann Defence for Black. So this game had at least two positive things going for it right from the start. Now, I have to hand it to your opponent, John: for someone rated 1644 they played remarkably well, making only minor inaccuracies for a lot of the game. Still, the pressure kept building up, little by little, until White couldn't take it any more and decided to do something "active" with the g4? move. This reminds me of something an IM I knew used to tell all his junior students: "The hardest thing in chess is doing nothing." Of course, the rules of chess compel one to make a move, but it's often possible to make a "nothing" or waiting move, that doesn't rock the boat or change the fundamentals of the position significantly. But psychologically for a human player, this can be very difficult. You get tired of suffering move after move, as your opponent (sadistically) tightens the screws. So when you see a way to counter-attack and maybe give your opponent a taste of their own medicine, it can be very hard to resist! Unfortunately, however, it can be this very burst for freedom that seals your fate and gives the opponent a clear, concrete path to victory.
Beautifully written
Man, lose 163 rating points or 63 for a draw, win for 1 point? You’re brave, Good job John!
Glad you got the +1...he did pretty good for a long time...the rooks on the 7th rank is one of my favorite strategies.
Your videos are so instructive, LOVE what you do for lichess and the chess community. So thankful. Hope you don't take this the wrong way but like dis is usually my lingo from my generation's typing so man it's an honor 2 get 2 comment on ur video and my point being -real talk here, I'd be a huge supporter (and, yeah, donator) to you on your chess goals if I weren't broke with $0 in my bank account staying in my parents' room upstairs. Hope you have an AMAZING day... love so much how you personally care about all of your fans. Awesome, God bless
I need more videos of you using the ‘ Scandi Candy.’
Thanks so much John, I play the Caro Kann and I found this video really helpful. It was quite refreshing seeing some new ideas in the Caro, keep up the good work!
As a caro kann player myself, I love it because I often get super compact comfortable positions like the one in this game. It is low risk high reward in my opinion and a very strong opening, especially sub 2000.
It was Alireja's main defence when he reached 2800. An excellent opening all around!
I exclusively play the Caro so this is amazing. I get these same types of positions everyday so it's nice to hear your thought process during the game because I kind of auto pilot a lot of these moves without thinking.
After watching the whole game, that was really instructive going after those pawns in the middlegame and also restricting c4.
As a Finn, nothing pairs better than waking up to JB and coffee!! Glad you’ve been posting often again! 😊
Thank you for watching!
As a Scandi Player these Caro positions feel so familiar... super interesting game.
Yes! Quite similar to Scandi :)
What a great content to enjoy my lunch break, thanks John
Appreciate you watching!
In analyzing my game tonight, computer said I blundered, but at the same time my eval' bar shot up. And every day, the world makes a little less sense. Incidentally, I did start playing the Scandinavian recently, and the results have been staggering.
Nice! "Staggering" as in good, I hope? 😁
Great video as always. Love your patience
Case study in patience - nice!
Yeah I do that all the time (forget/mix-up a line). It usually occurs when I spot an awesome move that’s pretty basic in its follow up (like Bd3), but then I check to see if I have better. It’s spending the extra time that I think makes the second line seem more salient such that my brain just refuses to acknowledge the first line even exists. Like you, ALWAYS remember immediately after the move is played. Kinda like locking your keys in the car; you know you’ve done it the instant the door closes.
I like to keep Queens on the board because it's my favorite piece.
I can respect that! 😁
I played Jorden van forrest this summer. Near end of game I was considering a move and thinking to advance a pawn after. But then my hand moved the pawn first. My idea was to move a knight out of preasure first. So when I did the second move first, i just left the knight hanging. It was a simultan ofc. I am not even anywhere his level. I am kind of weak in blitz. Stronger when I have long time to calculate. At the time i did this move order opposite of what i acctually calculated, i was already lost even he acctualy blundered a clean bishop first. I dont blame him. He played 14 players at same time, although some players was youngsters. There was some strong ones too. The rules was that when he came to our board, we hade to do our move emediately. While he basically, when he came to my board and saw my move, he did his in a couple of seconds. So he just forgot about his hanging bishop. After he blundered the bishop on the h file... i used a tempo to take it, then another to move knight back. So he got 2 tempi for the bishop. Somehow he already had quite some pressure... and even without that bishop his pressure just increased and increased... and i didn't manage to calculated and find solutions to his pressure. So i just collapsed totaly. I wishmy blitz was better. Perhaps i got a chance to punish his blunder... or perhaps not... hehehe.
Nice game. Yes, don't sweat the small stuff like M2 or M4. :-)
These videos are great
Thank you - glad you enjoy them!
4:16 A potential issue I saw with taking on d4 and then Bc5 is that, it might appear that you’re developing with tempo but after Qxd4 Bc5 Bxd7+! kinda forces Kxd7 and the king is now stuck in the centre? The position looks pretty bad for black…
Edit: nvm he literally talks about this exact problem like a min later lol
Love your videos John! Any plans on doing Lichess plays again?
Thank you! I'd really like to, but I gotta get my voice back to 100%. Might be a few months still.
Van der wheel attack.
I liked Qc7. I don't think I've ever thought of just moving the queen out of the way when opponent plays Bg5.
Man hasn’t aged at all
Thanks 😁
Hey IM John, could you play the traxler against fried liver attack?
I'll try it some time, yes!
queen-less middle game gangg 😎 ✌️
my fav queenless middlegame is in the english rat
That's a great one.
question: how do you play with low rated players?
I look on the Open Challenges list on Chess.com
caro is fun
hey just checking hope all well
Thanks! I'm doing well - just been busy the past week, and also giving my voice some extra recovery time. Appreciate the concern!
@@JohnBartholomewChess great to hear you’re well…take it easy and thank you for all your super instructive content 🙏
If OP wins they become an honorary CM.
Caro Cann is a bit of a positional snoozefest. I'll stick with the Italian or knights games.
I get tricked into playing the caro a lot. After e4 d5 most people will push e4 instead of capturing and I’ll wind up in the same position more often than not. I hate those kind of players 😂🤣
You must mean that they push e5. You should welcome such play, as after 2...c5, play can go 3.c3 (3.f4 Nc6 4.Nf3 Bf5 is even worse for White) Nc6 4.d4 Bf5 5.Nf3 e6, and you have reached a superior version of a French or Caro-Kann Advance in that the light square bishop is outside the pawn chain and you have played ...c5 in one go. You can get one or the other of these with best White play, but not both.
@@theJW55 yea I meant e5 my bad. Lol.
@@theJW55 I guess a typo like that is an early warning sign that I should not play chess this morning ! 😂🤣
Yes, tobias, I agree. 2....c5 puts white in a very tenuous position, and patient play usually rewards me with a victory!
