The hubs is building a stand for my 125gal aquarium. He's experienced with steel and welding, but this is his first wood project. Of course, I'm being pesty wanting a stand that looks like furniture verses a regular stand you normally see made. (Not too demanding, am I? LOL) He bought this tool for the project and you're SO right! What nice seams it makes. Takes a little prep, making all of the pocket holes but WELL worth it. He actually made the clamps he needs instead of buying the Kreg clamps and they're working great! I just wanted to say, thank you for sharing this. It helps to see how the face framing works. This is the part of the project he's working on now. Hoping you may have the next step, doors...Thanks again & take good care!
A great video. I have been using that system for years . I also make my doors the same way. Before I assemble , I rabbit out the styles and rails for the center panel I always use kiln dried solid oak, maple or birch . With a bit of glue and fine thread pocket screws, I have never had an issue with the joints opening up and I always let the center panels float
It depends on how deep you drill the pocket holes when you set up the Kreg. I use all three quarter stock and 1&1/4 inch screws. I usually put a 1/4 " cove on the edges of the doors and have never had a problem with the screws coming thru. One thing to remember about pocket screws, fine thread for hardwoods and course thread for softwoods.
Great work. Heck of a lot of torque on that drill.
I'm looking at grabbing a Kreg jig. My only concern is that I typically use 1x stock (3/4" actual) and I do a 1/4" roundover on the ends. Folks have told me that the screw will show through on the roundover if I use the Kreg. I wonder if using shorter screws will help avoid that.
Always wondered how they got those holes drilled like that and now I know. Yep, I don't know squat about carpentry.
What was the wood you were using, thanks for helpfull video
Thanks 👍
I think we're talking about different things. I think you're referring to the jig. What I was asking about was the vise-grip style clamps that hold the work pieces while screwing in the screws. Sorry to be so bothersome. I just want to know if non Kreg clamps work well without the large clamping surface.
What length screws do you use on the 3/4 thick face frame, 1 1/4 fine thread. Ray or 1 1/2 fine thread.
Why did you insert the shim in between the clamp and only one of your rails? Was it thinner stock? Or is another reason for it?
well done. But don't you want to rabbet the edges for the inset face pieces?
you are awesome! THANKS !
thank you very much!
Ah, I see that now. I have both types of clamps. I like the Kreg clamps best for small corners because of the clamping surface. It's just more convenient and they are well made. That being said, if you already have some clamps, it's not worth buying new clamps.
is that a kreg clamp? it doesn't look like it. how does using a non-kreg clamp work with the pocket holes?
Use 3/4 plywood for best results.
That's a Kreg, it's just the largest version they sell. Great if you've got $100 or so, but the $20 and $40 versions work about the same.
I was looking for such comment, because I have ordered a $20 version...hehehehehhe and hoping that it will also work
