- This is the first part in a series of how to build a vanity for your bathroom. I start the project by making the pulling the face frame parts from a poplar board, The parts are dimensioned, then joined together with the Festool Domino DF500. The sides are also dimensioned, and then the face frame is attached to the case sides with the Domino
A Sketch Up file and cut list are located here drive.google.c...

This is the exact method of construction technique taught in Festool's training classes. One of the most important things I learned, and it seems obvious, is always reference the domino on the face frames and to make sure that when you cut your rails and styles, they need to match each other which is easy to accomplish with stop blocks on your miter outfeed supports.
Thanks! I have never been to Festool classes, although I should as Festool USA's HQ is only 30 minutes from my house. I think I originally read about that method in the domino supplementary manual.
Thanks for making this. I was having a hard time finding a video on using the domino to make and attach the face frames. You explained it really well and I appreciated the use of the domiplate on joining the frames.
Glad you could take something away from it!
@@GuysShop I did! Just finished my first domino face frame! Love how square it is compared to pocket holes which is what I've used before. Also the pocket holes sometimes split cherry face frames. A bit tricky with too long for the glue up, but once I have some practice it should go easier. Still have to attach it once I finish the cabinet.
I like your easy listening and build style guy. Look forward to the next part
Thanks Roy!
Nice Cabinet! I learned cabinet making from my grandfather. I never thought of using Dominos to attach the face frame. I've always milled a shallow dado in the back of the face frame to attach the cabinet sides. Since I was taught that method, I never really looked at other methods. It is an absolute enjoyment watching you work and seeing your methods. Gives me new perspectives.
Thanks Jay! Glad you took something away from the video.
learned a lot from watching this Guy! I love the trick of adjusting the fence to off set the face frame for flush trimming. I did an off set on the face frame of the big cabinet I built, just in a more complicated way haha. I think the one major thing I picked up from this video was adjusting the width of the mortises, I think sometimes I am trying to be too precise with it!
Thanks Matt! Yeah, I learned a long time ago to make one domino exact width and then the mating slot larger. You just have to think ahead about how you are going to glue it up, and it makes life a whole lot easier.
I'm just learning and having a great time building stuff and doing videos. Nice to have guys like yourself to learn all the tricks. going to subscribe and mention you on my next cabinet build.
Welcome to the community Frank!
Nice work Guy! You explane very good!
Thanks Andreas!
Great start to the series, Guy! You've made me put the Domino on my shopping list.
Thanks Sean! Try ebay or craigslist. I got mine on ebay for a really good price.
Great stuff as always, Guy!
Thanks Cody!
Always enjoy your watching when you do a build. Looks good so far!

Well filmed and easy to follow instructions, Guy.

Thanks Joe! The Domino is a great tool.
GuysWoodshop i can imagine..wish all their stuff wasnt so pricey.but "ya get what ya pay for" aint it?
Nice domino techniques. I've never cut both like the middle divider. You're keeping busy it seems!
Thanks Brian! Very busy. I have to create some income for myself. Even if it means making cabinets again.
This is looking fantastic man! always amazed :D
Thanks Carlos!
Nicely done Guy. I like your process when cutting the Dominos for partition - faceframe and partition cut without moving the partition. I'll have to remember that. I notice that you used that Seneca plate some places but not others. It wasn't obvious to me if there was a reason for that. Just curious. I think about buying one of those plates every once in awhile.
Thanks Marty! The only time I didn't use the Domiplate was when I needed to make the face frame proud of the side to trim back later. It gave me a reference number to work with. Other than that, I use the Domiplate whenever I can, it's a great product.
Another great video 😉 Kind of makes me want to build something with this technique. I have a domino and I don't use it enough, which makes me feel guilty.
Thanks Daniel! The domino definitely has a place in the shop for certain tasks, and for this project, it really has taken over the entire build process.
Nice work there.....thinking I could use domino cutter
Thanks. If you have a use for it, it's an incredible tool.
I like the flex sleeve you have over your festool hose and cord. Can you tell me what size sleeve you got and if it helps a lot with the hose catching on the edge of a sheet of plywood when you are ripping it?
Hey Joe. I got it on amazon - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ROC1NTY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And yes, it helps quite a bit. This sleeve will work on the 27mm and the 35mm hose with a cord.
Hey Guy, just rewatched this series, really nice. One question, is the outside perimeter of the face frame flush with the cabinet box?
yes, it is flush since it is free standing
Guy, curious of the attachment you have screwed to the bottom plate of the Domino.......and used instead of the fence.....why?
Also curious how you do your cultist.......just pen and paper off the head or some software app
Good to see a nice basic project now and then......Cheers
Thanks! The plate is a Domiplate from Seneca. A must have for the Domino. I have an old version of Cut List that I bought around 2000 when I was doing this as a living.
Great video Guy! Curious what do you have over your dust extractor hose? I have been looking for something but don't really want to drop the money for the new hose with the sleeve. Also do you sell your shirts to support your channel? If so where? Its a great logo and I'd like to pick one up if possible.
Thanks Paul! The hose sleeve was bought on amazon - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ROC1NTY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I am working on getting the shirts for sale on a website.
Great thanks Guy!! You do awesome work and your videos are some of the best on the net. I would love to be able to support your work.
Maybe I missed it. But how did you treat the sawn sides of the 1x Poplar face frame pieces after you ripped them on the table saw? The outside styles will get flush routed smooth...but the other sides?
They are pretty good off the saw, but they will still get sanded with a sanding block to remove any mill marks.
Thanks for your response. All the best.
Great start Guy! I have to shoot the lock off my wallet and get me a Domino! Good stuff man!
Hey Brian! Thanks brother. For projects like this, the domino really shines.
Why did you use a piece of wood against the chopsaw and not just make the stop the correct length?
The pieces needed to be 10 1/4 inches, and the stop hits the wings of the fence at 14". The spacer bar is 16", so I just set the fence stop at 26 1/4".
Hello Guy - I am in the process of building a miter saw station for a Kapex miter saw. The Kapex miter saw is not yet purchased. How much side to side clearance do I need to allow me to do miter and bevel cuts? I will have cabinets to the left and right of the saw. The miter saw station will look similar to Jay Bates'.
Just the standard width of the saw. Just make sure that the handle is proud of the workstation edge. I would recommend getting the saw before starting the project so you can get exact measurements as needed.
a cut list would have been nice.
Hey Peter. I have made a .pdf of the cut list, and have also uploaded a Sketch Up file if you would like to download it. drive.google.com/folderview?id=0ByaXPv-775wOaG1iWHlMamtCbUk&usp=sharing If you have any questions, let me know
Thanks Guy, you're the man. I have something similar in mind but I had no idea where to start and this will help a great deal. Love your videos.
Pete
Where can I find measurements
Damn glue bottle. They need to be self opening.
HaHa. I agree!
