- In the previous video :- • New Raspberry Pi 7" To... I took you through detaild assembly of the official RPI 7" LCD screen
Now we will load up Raspbian and test it, this video assumes you have created and installed a boot SD card using Raspbian 1.5.0, the lastest as of Jan 2016 and have verified this is working with an HDMI LCD screen
You will see that by using the latest Raspbian image the who assembly and initial test is simple, easy to perform and works first time. If you have issues then please go back and re-watch the video. I did not hide any secrets and truied to show every little detail in order to help you
you can find the creation of an SD card here:- • Raspberry PI 2 B first...
Install Of Raspbian using the above created SD card :- • Raspberry PI 2 B first...
and finally if needed, configuring / testing a WIFI connection using the official WIFI dongle for the PI • Raspberry PI 2 B first... - Věda a technologie
Your videos are very useful and clear. Thank you Peter.
I just bought the 7" touch screen for my raspberry pi, I found your videos very helpful. I will be sure to tune in to the rest of your videos. As I do more with the touchscreen I'm sure that I will have more questions. I just uploaded the keyboard app, it's useful but hard to type on so I'll have to invest in a stylus for now. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thanks, mate, for the video. It was done very precisely and quite informative. Thanks again.
Really useful! Thanks!
Just bought the new Pi3 and screen ... Thx u very much .. A very informative tutorial 😀👍
Hey Peter! Awesome videos. Just started my Pi project and have really appreciated the information provided in your videos. How are you having the screen stand? It sort of stands when "upside down". I prefer the power port to be faced down though, and can't find a way to have it stand when like that.
Cool beans. That's the same monitor I have.
I was not able to get the max resolution as advertised with the new pixel raspian . Any body has any clues how to max resolution 800 x 400 display. Secondly touch screen is there a way to calibrate the touch screen? Thanks
+Peter Oakes: Found the video very useful having just got one of these screens. The only problem I have is that I am using Window 10 IOT (installed from noobs) and the display if upside down. There was no confg.txt file on the windows readable partition on the SD Card so I created one and put the lcd_rotate=2 line into it and the noobs "splash screen" is now the coirrect way up but the Windows 10 IOT display is still upside down! Any suggestions?
thanks for showing how to get an onscreen keyboard
Peter. great video. did you ever solve the upside down display issues? I have the same issue and I am unable to solve it. I can rotate the screen in the boot file, it is just simply rotate the screen but not the touch functionality.
Help sought.
+Pisti Fésüs What issue are you having with the touch functionality ?, if it is that it seems to be uncalibrated then turn off the overscan and see if that fixes it. Same file as the rotation
Yesss gooood,,,,,
Hey Peter, I have a question for you. is it possible to somehow add on an hdmi port on the 7" screen? for example when I use certain imgs of rasbian that are setup for use on diff screens they do not work on the 7". And I would like to be able to plug in my Pi to it, make the proper changes and then connect it using the ribbon cable.
+Manny K this may involve messing with the device tree to get that to work, I am not to familiar with its workings but have done something similar with a LeMaker Guitar (Im guessing here that this may work)
The PI does not yet support DUAL Screen which probably would address your need, maybe in a later release ?
+Peter Oakes: A teckie friend got the matchbox-keyboard to popup when entering the command in terminal but it does not show up in the accessories menu. How can I fix that? He also put the matchbox-keyboard command in /etc/rc.local thinking he could get it to start on boot but that did not work. (we did reboot several times). I went to main menu editor > accessories > keyboard IS checked. Puzzled-in-StLouis. Jim & Paul
+Jim Holstein Not too sure how to get the keyboard to show int he menu, on mine it took a while to appear but asside from retrying the install I did nothing different, it also does not pop up automatically when a text entry area was touched which would be nice
can i use this The Raspberry Pi Camera Extension Cable to convert dsi to hdmi?
the Camera cable for the pi (NOT Zero) could work to extend the display that would normally plug into the display connector (Not HDMI) but it is simply a set of wires, it wont convert anything, just potentially provide more distance between the PI and the display
Do you have to add any code on the pi to make the display work or does it just work once you connect it?
Just load the latest version of raspbian on an SD card, Connect up the LCD correctly and boot up. It should all work right off the bat. including the touch screen, but no auto keyboard :(
Can you measure whats the view-able size of the visible screen area?
7" diagonal, 6" x 3 3/8" length and height, this is the viewable area, only lit pixels give or take a fraction
I see, so the black area around fills up to more than 7", that's a great info. Thanks for checking it! :)
+Peter Oakes: With the Official Raspberry Pi display, when I enter MENU > PREFERENCES > APPEARANCE SETTINGS the window that pops up is too tall for the 800 x 480 7" display. I can't even drag the top blue bar high enough to see the bottom of the window.
+Jim Holstein have you adjusted the over scan settings at all in /boot/config.txt ??
On mine I had a black border so I turned it off, you can also set the resolution there if needed. you should not need to but it may have somehow got confused. Did you use the latest image from Raspberrypi.org ?
+Peter Oakes (TheBreadboardca) YES ... working fine now after editing /boot/config.txt
I let WIDTH remain at 1280 but set HEIGHT = 768 [this matches the 800x480 ratio of the 7" display]
I commented out the overscan_xxx=16 and disable_overscan=1 [got rid of black border]
My only real problem now is that the Text in the Terminal Window is really tiny.
So Peter - is there a linux option to zoom-in/out like Windoze CTRL+/- does?
+Jim Holstein if your using PUTTY then you can change the fonts, if your using a term within the PI console then go "Edit", "Preferences" and change the font size there
Hey Peter,
So I've got two problems which really annoy me
First of all, my mouse keeps on flicking over the whole screen, even if the mouse is not attatched
Secondly, the screen doesnt really seem to fit, so for example when I go into the preferance menue I only get to see half of it so that I cant even rotate the screen
Help is appreciated a lot!
Greetings from Germany
What if you could fit a raspberry pi into a small laptop that fits in your pocket? That would be really cool
that's called smartphone
Excellent video. At 3:42 you mention "a simple config change to turn the display 180-deg upside down". Please elaborate in the comments or provide a separate link. I'm a total newbie so please be specific. Thanks.
+Jim Holstein Putting the SD card into a windows machine (I dont know how to do it in Linux as it is in a weird partition for Noobs)
Openn the file in the root folder called config.txt
at the botton, add the line lcd_rotate=2 and that should do it for the noobs boot
under linux goto /boot/config.txt and do the same thing
+Peter Oakes (TheBreadboardca) how i can change the pixels? because there is a black bar around the screen
+NaeXróv that may well be the overscan setting in the same file, I am aware of this but not yet tried to fix it. I think it will correct the miss alignment of the touch once done
+NaeXróv I had the same issue. Try going into the menu of Raspbian (top left). Menu> Preferences> Raspberry pi configuration> in the system tab change the Overscan setting to disabled.
Worked for me.
Well thats easier, thanks for pointing that out
Peter
You display doesn't show the little color cube in the upper right like mine. Can you help me in removing it from my LCD ?
Rainbow square on the upper right means under-voltage (below 4.65v)
Try a different power supply.
Thanks. I found that out a week ago. I was trying to cross over from the USB out to the Pi and there was an issue of having the LCD powering the pi. I just run two cables now to a 2 in 1 adapter and it is fine.
Chris Sparks does a lighting bolt mean low power to?
james holowka i have never seen a bolt before, but it may indicate a power issue
I bough this screen to view the crypto wallet but the window is too large. What’s the workaround that?
make sure the correct resolution is set to match the panel would be my first suggestion
can you share with me your link to get the 7" LCD display...
+Leong Bk canada.newark.com/raspberry-pi-accessories?ICID=HP-R1-B1-Rasp-Pi, this is where I got mine from as I live in Canada but it is now available from a few places.
Newark, Farnell, RS-Components etc
here is a link to RS uk.rs-online.com/web/p/graphics-display-development-kits/8997466/
and here is one to Element14 canada.newark.com/raspberry-pi-accessories?ICID=HP-R1-B1-Rasp-Pi
thanks for the link.
What current Is required to power the pi and the screen simultaneously using only one power supply?
I would use a 2 or 2.5A supply, the running current will be less than that but startup and the occasional increase depending on use will be covered if you stick to the better supply. You may be able to gt away with 1 to 1.5A but be sure to have very good and short USB leads from the PSU brick to the PI/Display and don't plan on adding any or many accessories.
How i get to the /boot/config.txt?
+Pixelzombie See Jims comment below, much simpler
czcams.com/video/T_ZAgMZ-COI/video.html&lc=z12qgvthcu2yv5hsw23hsvzhinqnilbrw04
the resolution is a big letdown
I get errors after I run "sudo apt-get install matchbox-keyboard"... There are multiple error messages after Get:3 mirrordirector.raspian.org/raspian/ jessie/main.... it says E: Failed to fetch mirrordirector.raspian.rog/raspian/pool/main/libf/libfakekey/libafakey0_0.1-8.1_armhf.deb Size mismatch
I ran sudo apt-get update, and I ran sudo apt-get upgrade, then I ran sudo apt-get install matchbox-keyboard, but I still get the same error. Any ideas what I should do?
Are you running the latest version of Raspbian? or you could try this www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14719
Please provide a link to the preparation of the MicroSD card.
And a few other things if you would be so kind:
How do I assign a static IP address [192.168.1.12] to the device on my home network [cat-6 cabled, not WiFi]
I want to install the PLEX application if you would be so kind as to demonstrate that.
I want to SSH into the device from my Win7 desktop
the only way I was able to set it up (after hours of fighting with the terminal) was through my router. you should be able to snag the mac address of the raspberry pi and set it to a static address.
Oh sorry - I didn't press SHOW MORE where you do answer "creation of an SD card" and "Install of Raspbian".
I still would like you to answer the ConfigChange, Static IP and SSH questions.
My apologies for the "chatter", I'm so new at all of this.
+Jim Holstein For the SSH you just need to use a windows application like PUTTY www.putty.org/ and select SSH for the protocol, and then enter the IP for the PI you want to connect to. The PI has SSH enabled from default install.
To change the IP address for the PI you need to right click on the top right (HDMI GUI Screen) and select properties (The top line may say WIFI Settings but select it anyway), now you can select the eth0 interface and then proceed to enter manual settings for IP, GW, DNS etc. If i get a chance Ill put together a video shortly, your not the only one asking so worth the time to create it.
Same old Unix X/Windows crap with a window manager layered on top. Worse than Windows. Raspberry Pi is only good for gaming or embedded systems. It will never be a general purpose device. There are some very interesting applications for this device. Don’t expect it to replace any laptop or tablet you use.
If you have watch my vids about the PI and windows 10, you will see that I have expressed the same thing, if you want it to be a desktop replacement then you will be disappointing, but as an appliance / embedded system it opens up alot of possibilities even with Windows 10 for IOT
