      @raygan1221 Před 4 lety +142

      Well, actually, there's another explanation here. According to the rules of the gladiator battle: gladiator is a battle only for the lowest kind of people: slaves, POW's, criminals. If a royal blood, high ranking soldier, soldier, and even the emperor himself decided to take participation, he will be considered stripped of his position until the fight is over. So, in this case, Commodus, maybe forgetting the rule or expecting special treatment like always happens when a royal blood fights in a gladiator battle, was technically not an emperor and no more than a slave or criminal.

      Maybe for the 1st of 2nd time, the command "loose" or "release" would have detracted spectators from this scene. It is some kind of sophism that is not apt in the emotionality of the scene.
      The present-day word "Fire!" perfectly captures the meaning of what Quintus had to say at that given moment. I think it was a wise decision to let him say "Fire!" rather than "Release!".
      By the way, Quintus, Commodus and the lot should have spoken ancient Latin rather than English. I did not hear you complain about that.

    This scene doesn’t do much more for explaining why Quintus doesn’t help Commodus in the end. It actually hampers flow. Maximus’s gravitas and purity were actively compared to Commodus’s villainy and weakness and examined by Quintus over the course of the story, who, seeing an opportunity to end what would’ve been a lifelong reign of terror, was also able to make amends for betraying Maximus at the beginning of the movie. Commodus’s stabbing of Maximus prior to the final fight was the final straw for Quintus. He knew Maximus had the love of the people and had he survived, would have been able to excuse him of disobeying Emperor Commodus for the sake of the greater good.

The emperor was telling him that he should have known because he was a general and punishing him firstly, by refusing his request. At the same time giving him a guilty trip by making sure he knew that those men were dying in his place. Testing fate standing in between the two men he tests his loyalty with an opportunity to kill him by ordering the troops to fire on him as well.Knowing that Maximus was still alive was tatamount to seeking to kill the Emperor.
