Theory: Nabbit is Bowser Jr. from the future. His dad finally takes over the world after the absence of Mario in NSLU. Bowser Jr. then learns that his dad is a tyrant and needs to be stopped, so he travels back in time to help Luigi defeat Bowser thus saving the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser's eternal rule.
Game theory over here making a "rosalina is luigi's daughter from the future! " all over again, not saying it's a bad thing tho!
I’m surprised the speedy rabbit was not in the last Mario golf game where speed golf was a focus. Hell why isn’t he in the Mario and Rabbid spin-offs, get all the rabbits in there man. Fun video. I like his design, I hope they do more with him in the switch era.
The old nintendo website says he has buckteeth underneath and is a regular bunny but covers his mouth to wear a scary bandana

might be worth noting that iirc hes also got a really squeaky screechy voice that doesnt really sound like.. any other thing in mario that could concievably be nabbit
also theres other mysteries about him like. are the eyes real or false? sometimes they blink and have definition, sometimes they just look painted on? some renders also show that the limbs also have separate defininition from the purple parts of the body if that makes sense

Nabbit, you little enigma
When you pointed out that nabbit was obviously in a mascot suit and were pulling up someone to compare him too, I saw the yellow in the corner of my eye and man, William afton wouldve been the perfect hysterical curveball to throw there.
So, there's one weird-ass thing about Nabbit; New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, in all its wisdom, gave Nabbit new voice clips. And he sounds like the Broodals? It's not a perfect match, but it certainly has that, um, synthesized phlegm-in-your-throat vibrato the Broodals have. Then again, the Koopalings' Mario Kart 8 voice clips also have this quality, so it doesn't really solve the case of whether Nabbit is a _tortoise_ or a _hare,_ so to speak. He's definitely NOT Bowser Jr., though, and the voice thing supports that. Other than that, well...
Evidently he has his eye by Mario, and seems to consider him an act to beat. Why else would you tally the statistics of your opponent? The bandana being _evocative_ of Jr.'s, but being better drawn, suggests that Nabbit's at least more mature than him. Maybe it's to frame Jr.? He has no allegiances, other than to his bag, it seems.
So; my personal headcanon is that he's a Moon Rabbit like the Broodals. No relation to them, but he chooses to conceal his heritage in favour of his free-spirited banditry. Moon Rabbits aren't very common in the Mushroom Kingdom, after all.
If "Nabbit is a Moon Rabbit" IS the intended canon, it was most certainly imposed on Nabbit retroactively; not that it means that much in the long run, considering the Broodals have _yet to even appear_ in a new Mario game after Odyssey.
Honestly, though, I like a good chaotic force, especially in a series like Mario. He's more of a rival than Wario is now, at least.

Maybe he actually is koopa kid from mario party. Think about it, he was replaced and forgotten that’s why he is not on either side.
It also makes sense because it would explain the bandana paralleling Jr’s one he would probably have resentment towards him.
The character that should of just been Popple from Mario and Luigi.
Especially because Nabbit replaced Popple in Paper Jam.
Well Popple is Beanish, but anyways Nabbit didn't replace anyone in Paper Jam, because it's not like past characters were used much in Paper Jam, Popple still appeared in The Remake, besides isn't it better to actually make new things instead of relying on things from the past

In lego mario, there may be a connection to nabbits identity, in the most recent blind boxes of the time of making this comment, nabbit and a purple toad are in it. Seems a bit suspicious, doesn't it?
Nabbit is an absolute enigma and it should probably stay that way. There hasn't really been any focus on him and what's under his mask since.....who really cares. The most likely person to be Nabbit has the major flaw of having a cloth in a completely different series. Overall Nabbit is more of a set piece than a character. Used here and there for whatever is needed of him. As long as it fits what little character they've given him, they can do anything with him without it feeling out of place.......so he fits in perfectly with the Mario cast.

I hate these types of takes, "Hur dur mario characters have no character amirite", it just feels like you're actively trying to ignore all the character just to make the point
@@Quinhala11 Am I ignoring character? Yes Mario characters do have character but they are super barebones and simple. Luigi easily scared, goofy the butt of a joke a lot of the time but still heroic. That isn't me oversimplifying his character into one sentence, that's just mostly all there is to Luigi. Mario characters feel more like the embodyment of character traits rather than actual characters and that's perfectly fine. No one really minds and they're still widely loved. It's also why the characters can do sports or parties without it ever feeling out of place. Mario and friends are so simple, they can do nearly anything and no one will raise an eyebrow.

maybe Bowser Jr and Nabbit's bandanas look different because Jr made his original poorly drawn one when he was younger, so in order to deceive you he made a new and improved one for the Nabbit costume! Idk I just really like the idea of Nabbit being Jr in disguise

Another thing to add to the Il Piantissimo thing, since he has the Running Man from OOTs face isnt it interesting that he's the guy you give the *bunny hood* to?
I think that he is Popple. He fits all the critera:
-He’s about the same size as Nabbit
-He wears a purple mask, which means he does wear a purple disguise (He even has white gloves like Nabbit does.)
-Popple and Nabbit are both bandits
-While he has never been shown with Bowser Jr, he HAS tried to brainwash Bowser into becoming his minion before.
-And one other piece of evidence is that out of all the Mario characters who have ever stolen things Popple is the only character besides nabbit who carries a bag full of stolen stuff at all times.
And another theory that just came to mind for some reason is that he could be Fawful (I mean, it would definitely be in-character to mockingly recreate his rival’s son’s bandana, and then work against him at times. So Fawful could also be Nabbit.
OK wait didn't Nabbit appear on screen with Bowser Jr. in both New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe? Like in Bowser boss fight Bowser Jr. appears and you need to knock him out of his clown car, and then you hit Bowser with it. So now I'm confused.
When you beat the game you unlock Nabbits home maybe you can learn who he is

I feel like he fill the role of a true neutral, never evil, never good, he just does whatever he want without any big idea on his mind, like in Mario and Luigi paper jam, and I don’t think we have a another character that fill that role

I remember Bowser Jr having a (relatively) large role in Paper Jam. I don’t remember if him and Nabbit were ever in the same scene though, or if it’s too contradictory to his motives to kinda half help the bros.

He isn't purple he has a cloak he's just a normal black rabbit not working for anyone just stealing stuff in Mario and Luigi paper jam he helps you fight but once you beat the foe he continues to fight you so he will team up for his own good and bandanas are different I still can't explain why he has a bandana but that's my theory so far
