  • El Paso International Airport (ELP) is a medium-sized, multi-use airport located north and east of the city of El Paso, Texas. Pilots inbound for ELP should note that the airport is located a mere 3.5 miles north of the US/Mexico border and should plan accordingly. Another unique aspect of ELP is that Biggs Army Airfield (BIF) is less than two miles north. BIF’s runway configuration matches ELP’s Runway 4-22, and the airports are confused for one another on a daily basis. This issue warrants additional awareness from both pilots and controllers.
Visit www.faa.gov/elp for supplemental "pilot handbook" information on this airport including airport-specific cautions, information local controllers want pilots to know, airport communications, airspace details and other preflight planning resources.
1:29 - The traffic mix at ELP.
2:06 - The airport configuration consists of a set of parallel runways with staggered thresholds labeled Runways 8 left and right, and 26 left and right, and the larger, non-intersecting Runway 4-22. Additional airport configuration details and cautions to keep in mind are also shared.
3:13 - Another arrival issue at ELP concerns aircraft approaching from the east and southeast on the right downwind for Runway 8 right.
3:55 - Hot spot #1 is simply a large and complex area of concrete, where several taxiways and an extended runway centerline come together.
4:15 - Another issue that occurs at this location concerns the large non-movement area surrounding the terminal. Aircraft push back from the gates on their own, and have conflicted with aircraft rolling out on the run-off area for Runway 26 L.
5:21 - Not listed as hot spots, areas that are still a concern, specifically involve departures.
5:43 - One last issue to be aware of concerns rising terrain to the west of the airport.
To address wrong surface events where an aircraft lines up to or lands on the incorrect runway, taxiway, or airport, the FAA released Arrival Alert Notices (AAN) at various airports with a history of misalignment risk. View the ELP Arrival Alert Notice here: www.faa.gov/ai...
The FAA's From the Flight Deck video series uses aircraft-mounted cameras to capture runway and taxiway footage and combines them with diagrams and visual graphics to clearly identify hot spots and other safety-sensitive items. Learn more at www.faa.gov/Fr...
This video is informational only and does not replace the pilot’s responsibility to conduct required pre-flight planning in accordance with FAR 91.103.

Spent a lot of my childhood in northeast El Paso. Back then C5s would sometimes to touch and goes probably at Biggs. I was there when the Shuttle being piggybacked home to FLA stopped there. I could see it from my backyard
