  • Landings at most dangerous airports in the world look spectacular. We have all seen videos of landings in Lukla or Paro (Bhutan) or at other airports in the Himalayas, but how about airports in Europe? There are quite a few airports with high terrain in the maneuvering area of the runway. Take a look at this spectacular approach and landing at Calvi (LFKC/CLY) and let me know in the comments if you have ever landed there or at any other airport with impressing backdrops?

    Calvi is a category C airport. Both pilots must be qualified in a flight simulator before being released for Calvi ops. All approaches and missed approaches, balked landing procedures and escape procedures are trained at max allowed wind components and without auto thrust to increase workload.

    I was a passenger on BA146 flight from Edinburgh to Calvi via Nice in 1993. We could see the plane was flying up the valley with the runway on the left and the mountains on the right. Then what seemed to be a sharp left turn at the top of the valley followed by a beautiful descent to the runway. By far the most impressive landing I have ever experienced.
    Airport security at Calvi was provided by a couple of six foot tall French Foreign Legionnaires from the local base, armed to the teeth!

    Well, as an airline pilot I used to land at Santos Dumont airport in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the most challenging approach for landing due to the surrounding areas. That is one of the shortest runway around the world for aircrafts with landing weight above 60 tons. The runway has only 1.320 meters and at sea level, the A319 needs around 890 meters until full stop. If you cross the threshold at 50 ft and touch down at 1.000 ft mark, the remaining runway will be 1.020 meters. There is no margin for errors. Despite the beautiful approach, it is just another day at the office...😎

    • @PilotWanderlust
      @PilotWanderlust  Před měsícem

      It is a quite short final with much higher terrain at the point where the base turn starts than the runway elevation. You can not extend the downwind leg due to the mountain in front for a normal rate of descent. So you have less track miles to touchdown and at the same time you still have to stay at 1700ft and later 1500ft to maintain sufficient terrain clearance. That said, for the distance remaining to the runway you are quite high and and therefore you just need a higher ROD.

So used to land with fuselage parallel to the runway, at the last moment he cannot help to make a full turn thus overshooting the runway. Banking is scary to watch. I’ve seen too many videos where things get out of control and the plane inverts. Were you just practicing landings on Corsi?

    • @PilotWanderlust
      @PilotWanderlust  Před 9 měsíci +4

      Calvi is a category C airport and both pilots must be qualified in the simulator before their first flight to the airport. All approaches and airport specific procedures are trained including missed approaches, balked landings etc. It is indeed very unusual to bank that much at low heights and descent at higher rates than usual but in this case it is required.

      I do not get excited about 30 degrees bank, I just point out that 30 degrees bank close to ground is unusual with an airliner. Thanks for watching!

    At first I just see a plane flying in a straight line towards the runway? And then an approach from the other side? What exactly is difficult or remarkable about that? A simple act, it is funny to note how pilots try to make their work more spectacular than it actually is.

    • @PilotWanderlust
      @PilotWanderlust  Před 5 měsíci +4

      Correct, a straight in with some specials: often moderate turbulence on final, an escape point in case of engine failure with sharp turn out and if you have already passed the point you do not have any other option than landing (even if you will miss the runway, land anywhere); no go around performance within 2 miles to the runway and in case of dual engines operating a balked landing procedure that you do not really want to fly but if required you must strictly stick to the chart! From the other side, you are closer to the mountains than it looks like in the video, passengers report they were stressed and ask if it is „normal“ to approach this way (I do brief them in the passenger announcement before landing what to expect to keep them feel comfortable), a higher rate of descent than usual (would be considered unstable at any other category A or B airport) at very low height and all this with a bank you have seen in the video… With terrain downslope towards the runway you are actually much closer to the ground while banking than you would usually be at specific distances to the runway. All this, with shifting winds make it a „little bit different“ compared to most other approaches and landings.

  • @davidbrattain1446
    @davidbrattain1446 Před 7 měsíci

    I learned within the first two weeks of flight training that an approach regardless of type should be conducted with turns within 30 degrees of bank and no more. Skidding turns, step turns (beyond 30 degrees) were answered with "fail" and "Go around or "go missed". Many stall spin accidents could be avoided by sticking to this rule alone.

    • @PilotWanderlust
      @PilotWanderlust  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Pilots not familiar to the special procedures at category c airports are not allowed to land there. This approach is trained in the simulator.
