I met Tony Randall, shook his hand and told him how much I loved him...I was just a teen. He was running the streets of NY with Bella Abzug when she was campaigning for office. What a genuinely quirky and wonderful guy. 💜
I wholeheartedly agree. I still watch an episode almost every day. Tony Randall might be my favorite all time actor in comedies. That's no slight to Jack Klugman who was also fantastic.
Tony was an extraordinary conversationalist. His skills as an actor hinged upon his ability to listen and respond accordingly with exactly the appropriate timber and intonation. An unusual talent in that respect.
I saw Tony Randall walk past me in Central Park once back in the 80s. I left him alone but he had a smile and walked straight with good posture and that energy in his walk. I couldn’t help thinking it wasn’t Tony, it was Felix.
The Gremlins were on the other night, and Tony Randall was voicing for one of the evil Gremlins. One of my favorite lines in the movie was when Tony says in that great oratory voice 'New York, New York, the city so nice they named it twice.'
roweenie I wish tv today had as much class as Johnny Carson and the Tonight Show. A little innuendo went a long way in those days, they certainly didn't have to be vulgar to get laughs either. Oh how I miss really good television.
Well, when Jeff Goldblum is on with Conan, we get some lively repartee. Also, when Molly Shannon visits with Conan, it's always something special. And Martin Short is probably the best talk show guest. He's best with Conan; but his appearances on any talk show bring the viewer back to the Carson days.
Tony Randall is so underrated! His career is filled with major movies and he's worked with major Hollywood stars. He plays the starstruck fan so well that people believed it was true!
Even in later years when he made frequent appearances on the David Letterman show, Tony Randall was riotously funny and had everyone rolling in the aisles with his wit and humor.
Mr. Randall is right bout “lucky to have a hit” cuz he never had a hit after “Odd Couple” again. I had the pleasure of meeting him. He was a kind, gracious man to me.
It's hard to look at Tony Randall and not identify him as Felix Unger. His voice, His mannerisms, his diction, the man is a legend forever like his co star Jack Klugman.
Beautiful, beautiful... i feel so cheated when i reflect on the excrement that is called talk shows today, while enjoying this. The state of what is called "entertainment" in this country, indeed in this age, is just one more thing that makes me look forward to meeting my maker.
Tony must've been a real humble man . And loyal / faithful. To have been so popular and never fooled around. Celebrities have had many opportunities. I think he was married near 50 yrs .
Public morality had not yet sank to today's sub level, therefore the comedic intensity or shock value reflects 1974, not today. The real shock should be how far we have sank since this time and we are still plummeting - that's the real sadness.
There were still stations that were not hooked up to the satellites that still used kinescopes up until the 1980s (Usually in the out of the way places)
I saw this show when it aired , one of the very few I saw of Johnny Carson’s show. I tried to see any appearance with Tony Randall . I didn’t found Johnny funny. I WAS DEFINITELY WRONG. I’m a BIG fan now
The “haters” here cant appreciate the banality on this hilarious banter. I miss both of these men. The timing, the gestures and comments like I even hate to see cheap furniture like this destroyed. I think you come here to save on a psychiatric. The tangents are hilarious.
Was Tony, in fact, gay? I know they are joking around here and I am not drawing any inferences from this. I know he had a long child less marriage and then fathered 2 children with a much younger woman. Still the rumors persisted. The Odd Couple may be my favorite show of all time, and Felix my favorite sitcom character.
@@martian9999 It doesn't make you a good person if you have never privately wondered about someone's sexual preference. It just means that you are obtuse.
I couldn’t care less but I agree wholeheartedly. Randall being married means nothing. Rock Hudson, Raymond Burr, Robert Reed were all married. At the time, being gay was detrimental to their career.
@@TowGunner Well, it must have meant something to Randall, seeing as how his first marriage lasted 54 years and his second 8 more. Tony Randall was undoubtedly a heterosexual.
I could listen to Tony Randall talk all day long, he has perfect diction and timbre, and a great vocabulary.
he definitely owns a doghouse.
Same. I can't stop watching him.

Tony Randall was a class act-Thanks for posting!
He was one of the best.
The odd couple was funny as hell. Randell and klugman were perfect team. Show way underrated
I wholeheartedly agree. I still watch an episode almost every day. Tony Randall might be my favorite all time actor in comedies. That's no slight to Jack Klugman who was also fantastic.
Even today, The Odd Couple is the best of the situational comedy shows in both its writing and performance.

"I hate to see even cheap furniture like this destroyed.". LMAO!!!
Carson was on fire in 1974! Some of his best shows ever!!
This conversation is like a well orchestrated ballet. Great fun to watch!
Tony Randall has the greatest speaking voice I've ever heard.

Orson Welles, Lee Marvin, James Coburn.
@@TerryUniGeezerPeterson , love those three, but only Welles come close as far as diction and vocabulary.
Who would have thought that one of NYC's greatest personalities who is synonymous with the city would actually be from Oklahoma? Tony is great.
I WAS A KID WHEN THESE TWO MEN WERE ON TV AS THE ODD COUPLE. BOY THEY WERE FUN -TONY AND JACK, MISS THEM!!!
OMG those plaid jackets. Brings back memories of my teen years in the 70s. My dad had those jackets.
Such incredible class, refinement, and wit. I mean all that in the best sense of those words. I can think of no one today who even comes close.
Two comedic talents. Miss em both.
Carson wasn't that funny.
Tony made Johnny work that night.
Absolutely sparkling wit paired with the best interviewer of all time. Pure genius - everything today pales in comparison.

Personally, I like the plaid jackets. They're interesting to look at and totally scream mid-late 1970s.

$30 for a haircut in '74?? I had one last week in 2020 for $23.00, and that included a generous tip!
$30 in 1974 is about $160 in 2020
but $23 in 2020 is like $4 in 1974
That is why my father was able to put 2 kids through college!

Yes, he was born Jewish.
His Father moved from NYC to Tulsa. His Mother was a native Oklahoman. They later divorced.
Anthony Mangi… Because Italian names are much more attractive than Jewish names. Jewish actors back then changed to Italian names like Tony Curtis”…

Dueling Plaid!

Plaid, plaid, plaid. Will it ever come back? LOL
