The Changing Universe of Middle-earth: The Development of Tolkien's Cosmology

  • The evolution of J.R.R. Tolkien's depiction of the origin of the Earth, Sun, and Moon in his Middle-earth mythos underwent transformations over the course of time. In the earliest stages, the Earth was envisioned as a flat surface, yet as Tolkien's views evolved, he eventually altered it to a globular form to be consistent with contemporary scientific perspectives. The Sun and Moon were originally portrayed as the products of the Two Trees, however, this representation was altered to reconcile with the scientific principle that the Earth came into being after the Sun.
    Throughout the development of the Middle-earth universe, Tolkien seamlessly integrated elements of science into his imaginative world, yet as the world became more complex, a growing number of inconsistencies arose within the narrative. At the close of his life, Tolkien reinterpreted the tales of the Quenta Silmarillion as folklore, permitting a greater degree of creative freedom while still allowing for some semblance of scientific accuracy.

    You guys and gals (production team that puts these videos together) continue to blow me away! Wow!
    This episode was EXCELLENT!
    I absolute love your “take” on the ever evolving of Tolkien’s masterpiece and why he may have changed “directions” in his epic.
    Again, wonderful video that stimulates the mind of every viewer. From the beginner viewer trying to understand the Simarrillion for the first time (with the help of your awesome vids) or the avid Tolkien fan that can’t get enough of this lore.
    Keep up the great work, team!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
    P.S. I’m sending your videos to friends all over the Internet. This channel deserves (and will get with time) a much larger audience to view your exceptional Tales!

    Lovely video. I think it is worth pointing out though that Tolkien's revised cosmology was very incomplete and much of the story was yet to be filled in as to how this would affect the events of the Elder Days and the 2nd Age.

    Personally I love round-world version. It might be less fantasy, but at the same time it could get expanded into universal level of scale. Like multiple planets and extradimensional realm that include expanded lore of Unseen world. It might be something like W40K in term of epic scale.

    The rule. Never...Ever let facts get in the way of a good story. Varda was the star kindler. Couldn't have created stars? She set the Sickle of the Valar to swing in the skies of the north..as a warning and a challenge to Melkor. That is Canon. And I get the theme of the video don't get me wrong. But face it...isn't mythology every bit as wonderful and even awe inspiring as science and history?

    • @TalesoftheRings
      @TalesoftheRings  Před rokem

      Those are things that Tolkien played with, not me. I made a video about Varda and the Stars as well ✨ This is just one example of his brilliance, as it offers a creation mythos that appeals to science geeks and provides a compelling and scientifically grounded creation story. There is no definitive version, it's a matter of personal interpretation 🌜

    Neat style, though there were a couple of inconsistencies and the name of earth was 'Arda' rather than 'Umbar.'
