The first episode of Seinfeld aired in 1989. Thirty-five years later, the show remains at the apex of American culture. People speak in Seinfeld-isms, they flirt on dating apps over Seinfeld, they rewatch old episodes of Seinfeld when they’re feeling down. And, in the case of the Weiss family, Lou still watches it every night from 11 pm to 12 am on the local Pittsburgh station before he goes to sleep. People around the world even learn English watching Seinfeld!
But now, during a time that is supposed to be the most inclusive, the most sensitive, the most accepting, and the most tolerant time in human history, Jerry Seinfeld is targeted for being a Jew.
You’ve probably heard or seen Jerry somewhere recently-from The New Yorker to GQ to… every podcast in the world. That’s because he has a new movie out called Unfrosted, which you should definitely go watch on Netflix. It’s hilarious, heartwarming, and you will love it.
But today’s conversation with Jerry is unlike the ones you’ve heard. He’s unfiltered. He’s emotional. And he’s speaking his mind.
I've seen hundreds of interviews with Jerry over the years starting with the Tonight Show over 40 years ago, and this is the first time I've seen him get emotional. Maybe that's why that moment landed harder. Thank you for sharing this conversation with us!
She’s an incredible interviewer
Thats all calculated. They both playing a victim card here that people with a bit of brain and humanity are just not buying that anymore
I’ve seen over 3000 Seinfeld interviews, and this one is in the top 15%.
@reginaldforthright805 which others come to mind that you can recommend watching?

This is the closest thing to a warm hug I've ever felt from the internet. Thank you Bari and Jerry.
Like the way Jer hugs busty teens??
We can tell you're paid advertisers by the way
I dont know why, but I cried when I heard this podcast. I never cry. I think I needed to hear that comedy is still here for us. Jerry is a gift to the sane in an increasingly insane world!
You are not the only one.
I ended the episode with tears in my eyes and it was a total surprise. I’m still not sure what it means, but I think it has to do with what Jerry said about comedians seeing through the veneer and how politics is all bullshit. It seems like everything is political these days and by extension, that means everything is bullshit then and it’s so depressing and demoralizing to exist in that.
Except he is railing on about wokeness like every other male comedian over 40, while simultaneously creating literally the worst comedy movie of the past 30 years. The guy who is mad that politics is everything these days is going around giving completely unfunny interviews about wokeness and masculinity and other clearly political bullshit, because his comedy isn’t hitting like it did in the 90s. A Pop Tarts movie is like doing a movie about airline peanuts in 2024. Wildly out of touch. This guy brought you to tears? 😂
@@DABA2024 Out of touch is exactly what we all need. Out of touch is perfect!
It's easy to tell you're paid advertisers by the way.
"Are you thinking of someone in particular?" - was the most meaningful and thoughtful question to ask/say in that moment. I ran through every possible thing that people say in these moments, and not one matched the depth. This question just revealed Bari's brilliance to me. ❤❤
I have a feeling she asked him who it was but they edited that part out.
yes all interviews are carefully edited.
Bari is terrible hahaha.
@@fabjtown1 No one would call this a hard hitting interview, but that doesn't mean she's terrible. Then again, Jerry probably wouldn't sit for a hard hitting interview. I get the impression he doesn't handle criticism very well. I don't believe him when he says he looks forward to reading the negative reviews. He only wants to read the worst ones? Because he thinks they're hilarious? Because he doesn't care about reviews? C'mon.
hey look barri has got another lame boring curated scam website university podcast show that nobody wanted, when will these people find the self-awareness to just go away?
Such an amazing interview with one of the greatest comedians of all time. I wanted to cry when he got emotional about Israel - I’ve never seen Jerry Seinfeld like that. He’s such a treasure. Thank you for sharing this conversation!
Stopped me in my tracks. Can’t believe we saw Jerry get so serious. Amazing realness
I love the way you handled the moment in the interview when Jerry teared up and couldn't say a word about his trip to Israel. That brief silence and the look on his face spoke volumes. And you graciously moved on from there... Perfect.
Such a crybaby

Yes! Well said. She didn’t milk it and exploit it like Barbara Walters might have. She just let it exist, honored it, and him, and then moved on. Such a great interview.

What a beautiful mind. I hope he stays with us for many years to come. The world needs more people like him.
Jerry always seems intensely private, and well equipped to handle any question thrown his way. The interview was worthwhile for that one heart-felt teary pause.
So you really think he did not know the questions in advance? 🤣
There was so much packed, into that moment.
well said- absolutely true- I wasn't expecting that kind of emotion from him- it got me too and set me off

great and novel way to put it
My gosh, Bari is such a smart and nuanced interviewer and the genius of it is that she still manages to put her interviewee (Jerry, in this case) at complete ease
Nothing I've ever seen has made me appreciate the skill involved in interviewing like this did. Bari and Jerry, the sum was more than its parts. Really excellent.
WOW! Watching Jerry for 30 plus years and never seen him get emotional and tear up. Bari went deep into his soul to extract that, well done!
He did get emotional one time on "Comedians in Cars" when talking about the late Garry Shandling, who was a very good friend of his. But usually, yes, I think Jerry wants people to think he is a sociopathic robot who cares ONLY about being funny and about nothing or nobody else. But clearly that isn't true.
@@apartmentgroup9671 It was never true, and Israelis, who adore him, always knew that.
I don't think she went deep into his soul as you say but rather their souls felt comfortable expressing themselves in each other's company. Two brilliant Jews resonating harmoniously.
I don't think she did anything except bring up his trip. The rest was all internal to Jerry.
It´s Bizarro Jerry! "He's weak, he's frightened, and he can't fly. Up is down, down is up, he says hello when he leaves, goodbye when he arrives..."
What a disappointment! His position on this , just seems that 2024 Seinfeld lives in the backwards Bizarro world. I can't watch that show anymore... Seinfeld was one of my favorite shows of all time...Just sad
Jerry Seinfeld is the GOAT of comedy, and also a very wise man with a great perspective on life and death. Bari Weiss did a fabulous job with the interview.
Larry David is the GOAT. Jerry Seinfeld has consistently tanked after Seinfeld.
I don't think there's a better interviewer on the planet than Bari Weiss- she's so prepared, yet sounds so spontaneous. She somehow articulates the questions I wish I knew I wanted to ask. I have heard & seen so many interviews with Jerry Seinfeld this past month and this one is definitely the best and has the most depth.
She is amazing Joy...❤
She's a freak
She literally killed Refaat Al Areer.
I really like how she brings out Jerry’s philosophical side and challenges him in the right way. And just the right amount of sentiment.
Seinfeld is a legend. And Bari Weiss - what an interviewer! Incredible.
I have never liked Jerry more. Actually.....this made him likable to me. Great interview and it brought out his humanity which I so loved seeing. I cried right along with him. 10/10 interview
Why did he tear up though? Why would visiting Israel make him do that. How am I as a goy supposed to interpret this?
@@johndoe-vc1we He met with the parents of some of the hostages and met survivors of the terror attack who also did a tour in the Kibutss that the massacare happened in.

While I can't say what was on his mind, I can say that almost any jew certainly of that age still has the holocaust and the thought of others wanting to wipe jews out fresh in his mind.

It really says something about the state of Jewish pain that we’re actually seeing Jerry Seinfeld brought to tears.
The “state of Jewish pain”? lol what a bizarre thing to say
@JMBvideo of course there's pain but they started a war and they still hold the hostages , kfir bibas was 10 months old when kidnapped.

I've seen several Jerry Seinfeld interviews recently. This one is the best and smartest of them all. Glad I found this.
The interviewer deserves an "A+"

The key to a great life is comedy. Find a spouse, friend, whatever, that MAKES YOU LAUGH. You can’t buy it, it’s something everyone can consume, create. You did a beautiful job, Bari. You asked great questions. You were so compatible with Jerry. You made him feel comfortable--and most of all NOT BORED.
Jerry was on a media blitz, but this interview, hands down, was the best one yet. Ever, really.
Two of my favorite people in the world. I have always dreamt of bumping into Jerry Seinfeld in Manhattan and saying “Thank you for the joy you bring to me and millions more. We are forever indebted to you” . My dream will remain just that; a dream. Now that I made Aliya, the chances have decreased significantly. Bari, thank you for realizing who you are and what your potential is. You are a gift to the world. How sad would it have been if you had “hid yourself” by choosing a career that would lead you to anonymity. I could listen to you for hours and hours. What a pleasure.
I used to live in Los Angeles, and bumped into stars all the time. Some are nice, some are putzes. But, Henry Winkler is the nicest man to walk the earth. I ran into him several times, and he was always gracious and kind. I belonged to the same shul, when he brought his little daughter in, for her naming. I've never seen anyone so happy and proud. Seinfeld gives off a similar vibe, warmth and humor. And, unless you're in the periphery, you might run into him someday, בארץ.

I’m not Jewish, but there is something incredibly wrong with anyone who would have hate in their heart after just a couple minutes listening to these two.

22:41 as a young Jewish girl growing up in Australia in the 90's I used to watch seinfeld all the time, it was definitely a connection for me. There was practically no Jewish community so Seinfeld, Roseanne and the Nanny felt like family 😅
Great interview. Jerry's description of New York is precisely that reason I love it.
Having watched this again, I have to say that this is a master class in interviewing by Bari. She's brilliant ---she knows how to use silence, her questions are wonderfully structured, and she knows just when to ask it. I know alot of work went into creating this. Truly magnificent conversation.
If you can actually get Jerry Seinfeld to tear up, you've done an amazing interview. That was a powerful moment.
I couldn’t believe it 🤯
One can not grasp the amount of pain the Jewish community is in since Oct 7. The grief and shock is tormenting our very core . No wonder even Jerry cried . The pain is insurmountable.

I can't believe how accurate he is about "place." He's definitely one of my kindred souls. Also: Bari is such a gift to all of us.
This is a brilliant conversation between an absolutely fantastic comedian who understands our society and its challenges better than our leaders and a great journalist who figured out that our society needs more than what our current media culture offers --- honesty, objectivity, and smart analysis as well as human conversations. Someone already said it but these two are national gems. Thank God for them.

Seinfeld is a gem, so is Bari. Millions of Jews were abused, kidnapped, raped, murdered, slaughtered and gassed in WW2. Then on a micro-scale in October, 2023. Never again is not just a slogan. Jerry and Bari know that.
Well said!

@@jknowstheway1462 I’m critiquing Bari. Sure people interrupted him. But for her to claim this is mob mentality is her, in my opinion, refusing to have an honest discussion of the topic of Israel and Palestine and the genocide in Gaza. Easy just to claim your detractors as a violent mob rather than actually address their argument. For Jerry to say he is a comedian and not complicit or a bad target, is perhaps a cop out. His wife donated to violent counter protesters at UCLA. He has seemingly equated being Jewish with being a Zionist in his support for Israel. The two are not the same. My point is, the discussion in this regard is sorely lacking.
