- Room 101 is a BBC comedy television series based on the radio series of the same name, in which celebrities are invited to discuss their pet hates and persuade the host to consign them to a fate worse than death in Room 101, named after the torture room in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, which is itself named after a meeting room in the BBC Broadcasting House where Orwell would sit through tedious meetings.
John Peel was a guest on Room 101, broadcast first on 4th March 2002. - Komedie
This was a far better format than the dumbed down game show it later became.
The only true DJ that was on 'Radio 1'. I will forever miss him.

This man had the most likeable away about him.He certainly was not in any way a typical radio 1 dj that use to frequent our waves in the 70s/80s.
Jeez, John Peel passed away what only seems like yesterday but it was in 2004 at the age of 65. Only a blink of an eye later its nearly 2019 and had John Peel survived he would be 79 now,
I had the pleasure of meeting him on a couple of occasions. Top man, really genuine and honest. Unlike so many in the music industry.

John displays his brilliant dry sense of humour here and actually gets many more laughs from the audience than Paul Merton.
Hilarious. He was never quirky by design on his radio one show, but the occasional droll aside would have you in stitches. The music he brought to us was unique. The most missed man on the planet in my view. BTW Everton and Liverpool fans get on pretty well - just bragging rights, not violence, he'd never have put a Man U or Arsenal shirt on. Legend.

Death... I believe he died shortly after this program...about two years later. A rare intelligent and wry individual. Sorely missed.
Still miss JP after all these years. Such an engaging voice and I love the way he puts things. Makes Merton look like a struggling amateur. God bless you John and thanks for all the memories.
What a bloke. Articulate, witty and a genuinely nice soul. Put him next to any of the so called Djs of today...well. This is coming from an Evertonian too!!

I've just written an 'in memory of' piece for Classic Rock Radio it really is difficult to get the words down when all I really want is Peely back, watching this clip is my reward.
I stopped missing him about 2 years ago.

I was and am pig-ignorant about music; but when I think about all the beauty and strange sonic wonder and all the great songs this man brought into my life through his various radio shows, I feel an overwhelming sense of thankfulness and affection. A great man. RIP.
Easilly one of my favourite appearances, not least as this is the man who gave Bolt Thrower and Napalm Death some much deserved airtime.

I was lucky enough to use my meagre media connections to be in the audience for this show, and took my older brother who'd had his life changed listening to Peel in the late 60s. He went over and thanked him in the bar afterwards, so it was a great night all round.
spent my teen years listening to his world service show on Sunday evenings from the bottom tip of africa...he personally was entirely responsible for my love of music

Best Room 101 ever. Was lucky enough to do three John Peel sessions for Radio 1 (remember them?). Each time he and John Walters came down to see how it was going, and each time JP invited us out for a curry afterwards. Lovely man, sadly missed.

I miss him. There will never be another. Responsible for so many great bands(and more importantly so many bad bands) getting their moment.
I do not drink but this has REALLY sobered me up and made me even more determined to not waste a minute of my life as I am, today, midway thru' my 63rd year.
Maybe it is because I always been single,not done physical work and my Ladyfriends are all in their Late 30's but I feel like I am 40 but have, occasionally, felt light-headed when driving lately..ironically thru' Essex to het to Kent ( he is 100% right-Boy Racers Sat Night EVERY WEEK without fail )...
I found this episode by accident but never really listened to John and this was full of wit and good humour. Suddenly someone with this much life and goodness in him to just go, so unexpedtedly, with no history of illness is quite chilling.
Leaving a Family and 25,000 records puts my 2,500 to shame and then you just go and that is it....WOW !

Back when this show wasn't just an extension of instagram and career promotion with a script. The format and the time was much better... People actually epressed how they felt without fear.... Now driving through Essex would now, some how alienate Essex people and maybe some how be racist... So, people now say things like how junk mail angers them.
John Peel died young. 64 I think. No illness, he just dropped dead on holiday. He dropped like a ton weight.

He was the best. I have yet to hear a musician say even an unkind syllable in regards to John Peel. Perhaps because he worked as a DJ for 40 years, helping anyone who was anyone in music find acclaim, exposure, and attention from both the press and their fans. For over 4 decades. Could be part of why he was so well thought of.

I was a big fan of John Peel's although I always felt that rather than being a Pioneer New bands and certain genres of music , he tended to follow trends instead and then look around for the more obscure elements . However , he was great raconteur and witty with it . He also readily admits that his accent is totally false : although he hailed from tHe Wirral , the young John Ravenscroft was actually quite a posh sounding lad and later on he purposely changed it to sound more working class and more Liverpudlian .
Liverpudlian? I am sure us Wirral folk love being called that.. *cough cough*

Ok the last one wasn't so much of an invention but does play a big part in the amount of inventions by women. Also the above list is just a small number of things I felt like listing in a few minutes.
Hopefully you were kidding and just being facetious when asking that question, but for those who really don't think women have ever invented anything, well then that little list above is for that person. Also one should remember that women weren't allowed to work outside the home and before that go to school from the first day of colonization of day the U.S. until the 1950's and really it wasn't considered proper until much later (other than cleaner and teacher, but not after you were married). So considering that men have a bit of a head start. However, considering that women are 50% of the population and only having been allowed and not disrespected for working outside of the home and getting education; today in 2020 hold 10% of patents! So imagine if men were held back, for say the next 250 or more years from working outside the home or getting further educational training and also during that 250 years men would be given the full job of caring for their offspring and doing all the housework, cleaning, cooking and preparing meals for those 250 years; just imagine how much more women would be inventing in they were given the headstart men had?
some music snobs sneer at simon cowell but essentially theres no difference between him and john peel - they will both go down in history as well-loved music fans who devoted their working lives to showcasing the songs they wanted the people to hear.

Not to be one of those snobs, but John Peel championed bands like CAN, who's influence can still be felt in rock music today, some 40+ years after their peak years. Simon Cowell, on the other hand, championed Kelly Clarkson. I suppose her "influence" is felt in modern music as well, but that's not a cause for celebration in her case. It's a cause for alarm. I think that might be why people view them differently.
