I only just learned that a few hours before this was recorded, Paul Merton received the news that his wife had cancer. An amazingly professional effort from him.
I LOVE ricky he's so right! these days you have to accept and put up with other peoples kids and if you don't like it your dubbed weird well there are people out there who don't like other peoples kids and like to eat in a restaurant in peace! god bless ricky!
My GF lives in Paris. Millions of tourists asking directions all day. 90% don't ask in French. You'd be hacked off with them if you were a local. The French know food and don't eat the processed crap we do.
I so agree about Children in Need. It drives me up the wall. Same with lateness actually. And toddlers in restaurants... Man, I feel like I'm looking at a slimmer, older, cooler me.
yup I like how this one is goes deep into an individual's personality (granted this means that the quality of the episode depends on the person featured).
I agree on the kids in restaurants. People are so horrible about letting their kids to whatever the fuck they want. When I get the chance to go out the last thing I want are screaming acting badly kids. I also despise late people. My Ex and my Ex best friend are chronically late, I mean hours at a time late. Ugh if you are running late call the person. Especially now a days where everyone has a cell phone.
Children of what age? I completely agree, young children, shouldn't be allowed with their stupid screaming and everything, but what about my age? Another thing I despise is restaurants who do not provide the necessary cutlery, or napkins. Ridiculous!
LawnBowlerUK What kind of restaurant doesn't have cutlery and napkins? I've never heard of that before, even fast food places have them here (in Canada). Hell, even hot dog stands by the side of the road will have them.
@Furkin44 They hadn't even started filming the second series of the office yet, he spoke about it on the xfm shows and that was like late 2001 early 2002.
@Nogli The format of the show has also changed. Now three celebs will compete against each other and only one will see their pet hate banished each round. Don't know if David Mitchell is on, but Danny Baker is and apparently nominated 'panel shows'!
Right, because this really is what he would put in if he had the chance. not just something that annoys him a bit and that he has something funny to say about.
it's not an outdated view. it's still very much pertinent. My father is French, my mother is American, my step-father is British, and I work in tourism. I know all these cultures extremely well. French food has a good rep and deserves it. British and American food have a bad rep and deserve it, in comparison. That doesn't mean there aren't any great typically British meals. I absolutely love British breakfast and desert for example. Anyway, calm down. That's just how it is. Deal with it.
Children in restaurants, I totally agree with Ricky, no-one wants to hear stupid, laughing, screaming, crying kids in restaurants, they're places for adults to go when they want to get away from the kids. If restaurants were meant for children, they'd be made suitable for children. (Although I know people will say a lot of them are made suitable for kids, I'm merely saying that generally restaurants are mainly meant for adults, NOT kids).
This may be a controversial opinion... but I think instead of a childless recreational habitat, restaurants are there for people to eat things in; and for the owners to decide whom to cater to. (It is not up to some random wanker to decide to universal purpose of someone else's business.) I think for the most part, the restaurants I've been to are meant for children as well, because they serve edible food. Children generally don't drop dead when they stab into a fillet mignon, and they can expect to have a nice carbonara without fear of it coming to life and strangling them to death. You wanna get away from kids, go to a swanky restaurant that has an age restriction; not write angry letters of complaint to the local Mcdonalds.
Alright buster, how many of the 7.125 billion people have you asked as to whether or not they want my opinion? None, didn't think so, so do me a favour sunshine, sod off!.
Milking a human doesn't kill them, unlike removing their flesh And also, human flesh might taste terrible, whereas human milk, by nature, must taste alright
when the guest was interesting it was good....More in depth...but when the guest wasn't it was 30 minutes of nothing....the new forat doesn't go into the reasons and personalities of the guests but at least when you have one or two guests that are shit...it's still OK.
@@royfr8136 I'd take the occasional nothing guest in the single-guest format if you still get some great guests on from time to time. The problem with the new format is that it's the BBC making everything the same format. I'm not knocking the panel show format but I'm knocking the fact that it's overused and certain weaknesses of it become very apparent, e.g. it's all about one-liners and zingers rather than interesting conversations.
@Zombievomit the most famous is McDain's Restaurant in Monroeville, Pa. A few Airlines (Includeing British Airways) are thinking about it also. Malaysia Airlines has aldeady banned kids from first class. The anti-kid movement is getting bigger.
"If I go into a restaurant and there's, that, when you walk in, about nine high-chairs, I go 'Are you expecting the cast of 'Time Bandits?' If not, I'm leaving". Brilliantly funny, why I like Ricky Gervais' humor so much, because he has this talent and wit to drop in odd references (like the movie "Time Bandits", worth its weight in gold BTW) into a casual conversation on the topic, and make the sarcasm work perfectly!
I'm exactly like him on the lateness thing. I hate people who are late. You know how long it takes you to get ready and get somewhere and account for traffic. There's vary rarely excuses for me in this department. We have a friend who is late to everything. Drives me nuts. We have started accounting for that when we go out with him. I'm always early to stuff.
couldn't agree more with ricky's attitude on babies in restaurants
I wish they made *Karl Pilkington's - Do We Need Em?*
I only just learned that a few hours before this was recorded, Paul Merton received the news that his wife had cancer. An amazingly professional effort from him.
Yeah, he struggled on to get the 30,000 pounds for the show.
@@royfr8136 Yeah I'm sure that's what he was thinking about, you utter thick cunt

Cheers for putting this up!
Ricky Gervais is fantastic! Plain and simple.
this is rare - fits nicely in between the first season of XFM
Thanks for this!
i didn't recognise him with out a black v neck shirt
My GF lives in Paris. Millions of tourists asking directions all day. 90% don't ask in French. You'd be hacked off with them if you were a local. The French know food and don't eat the processed crap we do.
gervais is an absolute legend!
Yeah lateness annoys me big time. On the very rare occasion I am late, that annoys me more.
+achillesmlf youll love this comment then ...
+SKYLANDBAK Shut up you fucking hippy.
He was so much more modest. Now he would smile at the audience all the way in and laugh all the time.
i love him
I like how Ricky's been on many Comic Reliefs to date...
Ha ha ha! The gene Pitney clip from Albert Dock and the spunk sandwich! Very funny!
that episode satirises comic relief
Yes he has Yes he has Yes he has Yes he has Yes he has
I so agree about Children in Need. It drives me up the wall. Same with lateness actually. And toddlers in restaurants...
Man, I feel like I'm looking at a slimmer, older, cooler me.
his father's ancestry was french canadian, his mother is english. he wasn't born in france.
He did a song called equality street for comic relief after this episode
yup I like how this one is goes deep into an individual's personality (granted this means that the quality of the episode depends on the person featured).
Those incisors! ... Ricky Gervais is obviously a vampire ...
In english we had to do a speech on what we would put in room 101
well said
Also with him on the lateness, I'm someone who always arrives places early, work etc.
awesome cheers
Nice hair cut Ricky!
Too right ;)
Absolutely! As am I. I am, however, often stood up. Hollywood goddess Marilyn Monroe was often late
you've lived in france for several years and you still came up with all those stereotypes about french people ? well done
Wow, they look so young!
bravo sir
Absolutely agree. Escargot is nice but I'll take a nice roast over that anytime.
old room 101 kicks the shit out of the new one
it's all about merton, what a genius
What do you mean? It's a glorious 90's cut, i luv it!
I have problems with lateness too. I also have control issues. I see the connection.
@DirtyPsycho69 He was adopting hedgehogs for his garden on an episode of "Wildlife SOS" and he seemed genuinely funny and nice.

Oberonjames England is different to Canada then.
LawnBowlerUK Apparently so.
I like it when people are late most of people.
@Furkin44 They hadn't even started filming the second series of the office yet, he spoke about it on the xfm shows and that was like late 2001 early 2002.
@JeffUK I'm pretty sure David has been on room 101. I watched it on YT not so long ago.
that thing with walking round the block if your mates late the pub.... i do that
@aysonator - It used to be on BBC 2 back in the 90's and early 00'
haha watched this in my english class, spunk sandwich was a bit of a surprise.
Wow Ricky is so much quieter here, it's surprising how much he's actually changed :o
@XhoowieX The one with Nick Hancock is great as well.
I'm doing my GCSEs and this is my homework :)

I am an American and offended, mostly by the food.
Ricky speaks highly of yours.
I know exactly what you mean Ricky. I hate going into Pubs by myself and I will wait outside or take a walk.
@WalterLiddy That was from Extras, that was classic: "OH! Get him another cup!.... Fucking recycled tea and gob!"
I think I'd have had a fit too.
I'm sorry why hasn't Ricky burst out laughing yet?
He looks like Johnny Vegas in the thumbnail !

they should bring back room 101 like this, not the new format.
brown bread? white bread? ooorrr . . . . . a seedy roll?
Milking a human doesn't kill them, unlike removing their flesh
And also, human flesh might taste terrible, whereas human milk, by nature, must taste alright
Sorry was this an uncut version, or did they leave the "I'l make her a spunk sandwhich" joke in?
Imagination is not the same as superstition. Imagination is the ability to create fiction. Superstition is deluding yourself into thinking it fact.
101 is from the film1984/book 1984
the new format is shite, bring it back to one guest

This is the first broadcaste i've seen where they didn't cut the spunk sandwich bit.

o don't get me started on ze juden, hohoho
I was in England 3 years ago, Back then, the food was still terrible...
Remember Him Talking About This On XFM
7:44 something was cut out......
when was this?
This must be the genesis of the scene where Brent gets fired in the Office. Whilst dressed like an emu...
100% agree with him on the lateness. never acceptable, definitely the most annoying thing
This was filmed in 2003. Twitter didn't exist ahaha
I think french people are cold and distant, that's not arrogance but it looks like it.
Merton a bit uneasy at 12.56.
concur
@JeffUK They should make an entire series dedicated to everything he hates
when was this filmed?
He should put Will Self in 101
i figured this was before the office because i'd find it odd that he talks about how he hates comic relief then does an episode of it on the office
2002
do you know in a survey of national stereotypes the french saw us brits as lazy!!!
David Mitchell would be epic on Room 101
I have the same aversion for lateness
Zac and Molly? It's Ottis and Edie now.
Im doin a talk on 3 things i hate in english and one ichose is similar to rickys choice i chose babies and toddlers on planes
was after the office
b4 the office, i think.
If it's an 'acquired taste' it's obviously not the best food in the world!
i liked this before it even started playing
Turns out Ricky started it.
I guess it's a good thing that I don't care what you think.
There are plenty of good restaurants in London, only problem is they are fairly pricey.
Only decent cheap eat is indian restaurants.
