    Thanks for the video, well done. I'm a 57-year-old male and had my first bout of DV in 2010. Since then I've had periodic attacks, usually 1-2 per year, some that I'm able to nick quickly and a few that have been the ones we all fear. I went from 2018 - 2022 without a major attack but had a couple of warning shots that I was able to stem fast. Like you Chrissy, I eat cleanly, am not overweight, exercise regularly, and try to manage stress. But, for those of you new to DV here are a few tips: (1) There is no "one-size fits all" so you HAVE to engineer your triggers and recovery. As Chrissy said, there is no cure so you have to manage it. It is, after all, a disease. (2) I follow an anti-inflammation diet and that has helped. (2) I avoid what I call "the big five" which are alcohol, carbs, caffeine, dairy, and sugars. Okay, I admit, I'm not as good as I should be with alcohol and caffeine (gotta live a little too!). But, if you do drink try to limit it to red wine and drink black coffee, both in moderation. (3) Take a probiotic and digestive enzymes. (4) I follow a 16/8 intermittent fasting routine and that has helped in many ways. I don't eat between 7pm and 11am each day. (5) Drink plenty-o-water. I start each day with a big glass of water to get my organs rehydrated after sleep which is dehydrating. Never drink sodas, they're bad in so many ways. (6) I juice and I alternate between fruit (predominantly apple) and vegetable juicing. But you can't overdue that either, moderation is key. (7) I take ACV every day with water, about a tablespoon. (8) Exercise daily, I recommend walking 4 miles and some light weights. I have personally found that ab work can trigger an attack so I don't do much core other than push-ups and some resistance. (9) take supplements that focus on the gut biome. I went away from traditional medicine and found a great nurse practitioner who only focuses on a healthy gut biome and that has helped considerably. (10) Lose weight and control stress. IF UNDER ATTACK: (1) at first symptoms you have to assume it's an attack. No, it's not a hip problem, it's DV. (2) Go liquid diet immediately. Just do it and plan that you'll be on it for 5-7 days. The first 48 hours are the toughest and then it's easy. (3) Broth, bone broth, Water, Jello, non-dairy popsicles, are your friend. I also continue my ACV and Aloe Vera water schedule. I think both help. (4) Avoid antibiotics if you can but particularly be careful of the Cipro - Flagyl rout because of the side-effects (study those so you know, they can be very bad for some folks). I have used Augmentin and it work too without all the SE's of Cipro/Flagyl. I'm in the "avoid antibiotics" camp at all costs if you can because you destroy good and bad biome so you have to rebuild your gut. Plus, the efficacy is questionable. (5) No alcohol (and certainly stop smoking if you smoke). (6) I alternate between Advil and Tylenol. Tylenol is better on your system but Advil does a better job. Too much Advil can be problematic so I alternate. I have taken Hydrocodone and muscle relaxers but occasionally get a histamine reaction. (7) Walk. When you're in bad pain maybe take a couple days off or just minimal walking. But, get back at it when you can. I stop all other exercise like weights and heavy lifting. Give your core a rest. (8) as you start to heal don't jump the gun, start a low fiber diet (oyster crackers for example) and keep fiber at a minimum. When you feel like you're 85% better you can start to add fiber as you feel can handle it. SUPPLEMENTS: I do take psyllium daily but just one capsule. I also take L-Glutamine which I feel is a good add. My entire diet, supplementation, and focus is on gut health. As it's said, 90% of disease starts in the gut. SURGERY: I was recommended surgery in 2016 but I deferred. I'm not convinced unless you're consumed by it and they can easily and safely take a small portion of your colon. I have diverticuli in several places so that's not a good solution. Surgery does not solve the problem for many people so do your homework. Getting an operation is serious business. FINALLY: Sorry this is so long but this disease is a bugger and the medical establishment isn't putting much into it because there is no cure and not much money in it. I believe we can all help each other with suggestions and great vids like Chrissy's here. We're going to find a path that works for 80% of people which will lead to an improved quality of life for millions. If you've read this far thanks and good luck!

    Oh, I also drink Bone Broths and use Raw Manuka Honey in herbal tea during and after a flare-up. Honestly, with the Raw Manuka Honey I take a spoonful and eat it because I am normally starving on this clear liquid diet lol. It's about the only source of sugar I have unless I am feeling really dehydrated from bathroom usage then I will do a Gatorade with low sugar or not :) I also juice veggies + green apples for after a flare up to help get some nutrients back in my body. You buy raw veggie juice from a juice bar, but just be sure to strain it when you get home to make sure there is no pulp in it (pulp is a NO for me, not sure about anyone else). Anyway, Manuka Honey is not your traditional honey. Raw Manuka honey has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. It has traditionally been used for and may help in wound healing, soothing sore throats, preventing tooth decay and improving digestive issues. Please do your research because all Manuka honey brands are not the real deal. Manuka honey is only produced in New Zealand, so look for "Made in New Zealand" or "Product of New Zealand". It also has a very distinctive smell, almost medicinal but still taste good. Look for the UMF +16 and the MGO stamp. The one I like to use is the brand by Manuka Health.

    I can only handle VERY little solid food now. So, I mostly stick to smoothies, juicing veggies, fruits and drink bone broths. I also add collagen powder to my liquids and it's really helping. I had surgery for it a few years ago and I feel like it's gotten worse over time. That said, I find fasting helps me a great deal, plus a laxative. I also take vitamin supplements to help with proper nutrients. Keeping a food diary is paramount. These problems can vary from people to people. I can't eat red meat, pork, bread, oats, dairy, night shade plants, corn, seeds and so on. I have to go easy on beans and fiber in general. I have a lot of food allergies and other health issues on top of this disease. Oh, and walking everyday helps. Walk slow if you have to and start with 10 minutes and slowly add more time to your walking. Drink a lot of water. Staying hydrated is so important.

We now can tell when he is going to have a flare so he is very careful with what he eats. For some reason his pain last longer then normal with everything. His body takes a long time. Usually he has a side pain on the left side and we are able to determine he is having a flare. The dr doesn’t want him to take to much antibiotics though.

      The one I use is shakeology. There is a link in the notes. But any good protein/meal replacement shake would work. Make sure it has clean ingredients.

      I usually add the psyllium husk powder to a shake. I don't just drink it by itself. I guess you could. I use it several times a week in a shake not just during a flare-up.

    You add milk,peanuts butter in your shakes with diverticulitis? Hmm the strangest combination for a person with that ailment.And yoghurt? Are these not trigger foods?

    • @chrissyholmes-upthewindyla8343
      @chrissyholmes-upthewindyla8343  Před 3 lety +1

      They are not trigger foods for me. As long as I eat foods that are clean and get plenty of fiber I usually have not trouble.

      Finding a LOT of this is "do it yourself" People seem to vary greatly in what triggers and doesn't. I did find that using Apple Cider Vinegar/Organic, with the "mother" (about a tsp or two in a 8 oz cupful of water) helps greatly to stop things from getting worse, start healing.
