Ended up having multiple mini strokes, and was in a home for the little rest of his life. He was a happy, easy going, very intelligent person before it all. @@neiltaylor8198 I suppose that's fair although in tesla vehicles specifically, they are working on self-driving so less accidents because of lack of vigilance. The issue primarily is that humans are terrible at keeping focus typically so removing any distractions have at least some potential to reduce threats to other people occupying the roadways. Not to mention a large number of people still don't even own vehicles with screens (like myself), whereas the number of people who have a smartphone is considerably higher. I fail to see how punishing people on phones when they are supposed to be driving isn't helpful at least. Definitely would be safer all things considered.

    I'm a cyclist and I think he's a bit of a weapon.
    He's got the tunnel vision of someone with a cause or maybe even an obsession. I've seen one or two of his videos where he just goes too far with people, there's one where he gets into an argument with a pedestrian over a completely innocuous comment.
    Another thing is, Michael often talks about distraction, and how even using a phone when stationary can cause long-lasting distracted driving even after you put the phone down. Which is completely a fair point, but another thing that causes distracted driving is anger. So many of his videos turn into angry shouting matches that end when the motorist drives off in a state of clear defensive anger. Ultimately the motorist's fault for not obeying the law, obviously - but the reality still is that after their encounter with Michael they're probably more likely to cause an accident than they were before.
    I think he'd be doing a better job if he just got the video/photo evidence (which as he says in the video is very reliable) rather than showboating for youtube and creating long lines of pissed-off motorists.

I know the law is the law but a quick look at your phone to check your GPS or a text when you’re stopped doesn’t appear to have any danger. Now if you’re moving that’s totally different. • @CyclingMikey
      @CyclingMikey Před rokem +3

      The people using their phones stopped are the same people using them moving.
      Stationary phone drivers are still dangerous for many reasons:
      1) Should a child or shorter person cross in front of them they wouldn't even see them, and would likely then move off, running them over. Notice how WFN364 (google for videos) drives forwards whilst looking at his phone? This is common behaviour from phone drivers. Here's an example someone else caught where the driver almost takes out a pedestrian at a crossing:
      twitter.com/phonekills/status/1491526464520560641?s=20
      2) They are entirely unaware of filtering cyclists and motorcyclists. These drivers are often slow to react when the queue starts moving, and then when someone behind them beeps they drop the phone and hastily move off without even looking.
      3) If you imagine these people only use their phones when queuing at the traffic lights, that's terribly naïve. The gardener in LM63BTZ was on the phone whilst driving along, and quite likely had been doing it for some considerable part of his journey. These phone users are constantly using their phones, but it's just much easier to catch them when they're in the queue.
      4) Phone distraction lasts for a good 10 minutes after you put the phone away. Even if you're only using the phone in each traffic queue at each junction (which is highly unlikely), then you're constantly topping up your mental distraction and are basically as disabled as a drunk driver.
      5) Phone driving is worse than drink driving for distraction rates, and that's why it's part of the #Fatal4 behaviours that police target heavily.
      6) Mobile phone laws are about to get even more restrictive because of the govt, police, DfT all recognising the danger of phone use. New laws making it even more strict and easy to catch came in on 25th March 2022.
      7) People who knowingly break minor driving law will likely also break more serious laws. Strong policing of minor traffic offences has a strong effect on reducing collisions resulting in killed and seriously injured people. It's good to police these phone drivers.
      I'm really not interested in this nonsense of "it's not dangerous when stationary, because it clearly is and it's clearly still very appropriate to catch these drivers.

    We need a hero! Or maybe a heroine(s). Holland in the 1960s had a death rate from dangerous driving equal to that of the UK, and the change that led to it becoming one of the lowest death rates was led by women. Specifically, by mothers. They had reached their limit as regards the high death rate of children, and got angry, got together, got organised, and quickly built enough pressure to change laws, change public opinion, and even changing drivers too. Dutch cycling is now that we all aspire to. This was a great video Francis, more power to you.
